We open this program of mostly French and Australian music with a birthday tribute to a Hungarian composer. György Kurtág turns one hundred this year, and these miniatures from Játékok (‘Games’) feel apt for a piano duo concert. Deceptively small in scale, they are large in wit and meaning. Flowers we are… (embracing sounds) asks two pianists to lean into one another, arms overlapping, sound pooling across the keyboard: an embrace made audible. Quarrelling is exactly what it sounds like: two voices jostling for position, each insisting on its own territory as the keyboard’s ‘real estate’ becomes fiercely contested. And in Hommage à Paganini, one pianist is unceremoniously banished to a second instrument altogether. We put these three pieces together deliberately, to sketch a little portrait of duo life: closeness, conflict, and the occasional need for separate rooms.

ACO Principal cellist Timo-Veikko ‘Tipi’ Valve directs AYO Momentum Ensemble in a program that masterfully intertwines his Finnish heritage and Australian experience. Jaakko Kuusisto’s Wiima evokes the nostalgic charm of Sysmä, a Finnish town dear to Tipi’s childhood, while Crystalline, by the Australian composer Olivia Bettina Davies, shimmers with delicate textures.

The LSSO returns to the Barbican following its summer tour of Yorkshire and Birmingham, with a programme including Sibelius' Finlandia and Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony.

The wonderful Australian Youth Orchestra features young instrumentalists aged 12 to 30, hailing from all corners of the continent. The experiences these musicians bring with them are correspondingly diverse. They all applied for this summer and passed a rigorous selection process. Now they're touring Europe, performing at the MV Festival, and adding another facet to the colorful picture audiences can form of these young heroes of orchestral life—even playing the didgeridoo!
