Delyana Lazarova, internationally acclaimed conductor, takes to the podium to conduct Shostakovich’s triumphantly defiant Ninth Symphony.

Ostensibly, Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony was his tribute to Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. Under the surface, however, was a bold critique of Soviet leaders and the chaos ensuing even after the war ended. The final movement uses The Dance of the Bones (a favourite of Stalin’s), a sardonic signpost to the decreasing food supplies in post-war Russia at the time.

Hailed her “expressive and powerful playing”, “formidable technique”, as well as her “keen sense of lyricism and the classical style.” (Columbus and Richmond Times Dispatch), pianist Caroline Hong continues to flourish in her career as an internationally active soloist, chamber musician, master teacher, lecturer, jury member, and recording artist. Favorably reviewed by American Record Guide, she has recorded for Fleur de Son and Mark Records, establishing herself as an interpreter of twentieth- and twenty-first-century piano solo music. She has been featured on numerous radio and television broadcasts worldwide. Hong made her debut at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall as a winner of the Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition. She participated in the Van Cliburn International Audition, Robert Casadesus International Competition, William Kapell International Piano Competition, and UNISA International Piano Competition, among others. She has been a featured performer on Robert Sherman’s Young Artists Showcase (WQXR) and countless other radio broadcasts throughout the nation and abroad. She has studied with such luminaries as Martin Canin, Jerome Lowenthal, Sergei Babayan, Dmitrii Paperno, Ann Schein, Karen “Doc” Shaw, James Tocco, and Marylou Deitzer. Hong is an alumnus of the IU Jacobs School of Music (D.M.), The Juilliard School (M.M.), and the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins (B.M). She currently serves as professor and area head of piano at The Ohio State University. Her students have won competitions and positions in music academia. More akin to a symphony, Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto is a real tour de force of a piece, calling on everything in the violinist’s technical arsenal as well as vast physical and emotional stamina. The wide emotional range of its four-movement structure encompasses brooding, elegiac melancholy with savage, mocking sarcasm before it gives itself up totally to a rhythmic energy and brilliance of colour. Sibelius’ gem of a miniature masterpiece, Valse Triste, portrays a dance of death between a woman and the Grim Reaper, and is both haunting and poignant.

Shostakovich wrote his brazen and bold Fifth Symphony in 1938 in a desperate attempt to secure some sense of safety in an unsafe world. A composer who was held hostage both artistically and literally, he created music that would fulfill the Soviet regime’s populist and “heroic” requirements and provide his political salvation. North State Symphony Principal Violist Leah Carl is featured in Forsyth’s hidden gem of a viola concerto with powerful soaring melodies that display the enormous versatility of the instrument.
