Explore the musical connections between composers. Subito Con Forza by Unsuk Chin is a tribute to Beethoven written in honor of his 250th birthday. This work will follow Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture. Schumann and Brahms were tied together personally and professionally. Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 was written in 1841, then greatly revised and published in 1851. In 1891, however, Brahms, who much preferred the first version, published it against the wishes of Schumann’s wife, Clara. One of Brahms’s most beloved choral works, Schicksalslied, will be performed with the Syracuse University Oratorio Society

We are thrilled to have been invited back to Belgium, this time to open the new season at deSingel in Antwerp on 18th September and as part of the Flanders Festival Ghent on 19th September. For these two concerts, we will be joined by two artists making their debut with the COE: conductor Valentin Uryupin and Salzburg-born cellist Julia Hagen who is at the beginning of a global career. Together, they will perform Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 ‘Classical’, Schumann’s Cello Concerto and Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony No. 1 (arr. Barshai).

One of the more demanding works for the violin virtuoso, it is more remarkable still for its unwavering melodic inspiration and passionate expression of human feeling. Tchaikovsky speaks to us from the heart, using the voice of the solo violin as his medium. Schumann’s overture to his sole opera sets the mood and foreshadows the story’s path from a brooding intensity to an ecstatic joy.

In this most lyrical, poetic and fantastical of his concertos, Beethoven does not abandon Mozartian concerto form but imbues it with a genuinely romantic voice. In a thrilling dialogue between soloist and orchestra, it is ardent and melancholy, heroic and ethereal, anguished and whimsical. Schumann’s Second Symphony was a personal triumph and marked the start of the final phase of his career. It is a reflection not only of his recent health issues but also the feeling of triumph at overcoming the despair that had gripped him for a year. It transports the listener towards redemption in a way that looks back to Beethoven but also predicts the future greats, like Mahler, who were to come. A magnificent energy pervades Brahms’ overture. Opening with two emphatic chordal exclamations its defiant strength is heightened by the return of a poignant little march idea, defining the ‘Tragic’ even more potently than all the muscular thrust before and after it.

With a celebrated career encompassing five decades, Pinchas Zukerman reigns as one of today's most sought after and versatile musicians.  A prodigious talent recognized worldwide for his artistry, Zukerman has been an inspiration to young musicians throughout his adult life. In a continuing effort to motivate future generations through education and outreach, the renowned violin and viola soloist, conductor, and chamber musician teamed up in 2002 with four protégés to form a string quintet called the Zukerman Chamber Players. The quintet amassed an impressive international touring schedule with close to two hundred concerts and four discs on the CBC, Altara and Sony labels

Making his musical debut at the Wigmore Hall in London at the age of fifteen, quickly followed by New York, Gary became the youngest faculty appointee in the history of the Indiana University School of Music at the age of twenty-two. Her ability to bring an enormous palette of colors and tremendous emotional depth to her performances has been lauded by critics and audiences alike. Yang's innovative approach to programming and her collaborations with leading orchestras and chamber musicians showcase her as an extraordinary and kaleidoscopic artist.
