Alongside the symphonic pieces in the festival, this concert celebrates three classic Adams works for smaller ensembles. The Chamber Symphony, inspired by Schoenberg’s work of the same name, combines its rigour with the hyperactive energy and humour of classic 1950s cartoon music. Hallelujah Junction and John’s Book of Alleged Dances, both works from the 1990s, also share Adams’ ability to mix demanding performances with a sharp sense of wit.

The evening will showcase the second installment of the LA Phil Etudes, a project under the creative direction of John and Samantha Williams Creative Chair, John Adams. This ambitious project brings together leading composers to craft new solo etudes, each highlighting the virtuosity of an LA Phil musician and the expressive potential of their instrument.

The program includes a world premiere by Noah Jenkins, an LA Phil commission that promises to explore a range of sonic landscapes, from drones to audio phenomena. Missy Mazzoli's bass concerto, "Dark with Excessive Bright," borrows its title from Milton’s "Paradise Lost" and offers a journey through centuries with a blend of new ideas and influences. The evening will also feature Donnacha Dennehy’s piano concerto "Limina," a work that pushes the boundaries of the instrument.

Performers for the night include the LA Phil New Music Group, with John Adams conducting, Eliza McCarthy on piano, and Christopher Hanulik on bass.

This performance is not just a concert but an exploration of the rich musical relationship between John Adams and the LA Phil, showcasing the creativity and innovation that defines the Green Umbrella series.
