In this deeply personal program, Music Director Pola Benke brings her Polish musical heritage to the stage, featuring Lutosławski’s charming Small Suite and Chopin’s poetic Piano Concerto No. 1. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 — a bold statement of artistic independence — closes the program with energy and vision. A concert that honors where we come from and the new paths we create.

Toledo loves Rachmaninoff…and Olga Kern! Born into a musical family Olga Kern embodies the spirit of Rachmaninoff with her incredible musicality. She was the First Prize winner of the Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition at age 17. She was the first woman to win the Gold Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in more than 30 years. Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto is full of poetry, beauty, warmth, and rich orchestrations. Witold Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra contains stylized Polish folklore in melodic themes where the composer creates new harmonies with added atonal counterpoints.

The Carnegie Mellon Brass Spectacular will feature works by Altenburg, Bohme, Dahl, Dukas, Ewazen, Lutoslawski, Ravel, and more. The concert will also feature many groups, from smaller groups to large ensembles, which will contain both Carnegie Mellon students and members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
