What would the orchestral sound be without violas? One only has to experience a Mahler symphony to appreciate the slightly darkened, slightly scratchy sound of this often overlooked string group. In this chamber concert, the viola—as it prefers to be called, more elegantly—can be enjoyed in its purest form and up close. Oksana Labach and Igor Tulchynsky of the viola section of the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra put their instrument in the spotlight, performing works by Carl Stamitz, Max Reger, Jean Sibelius, and Jean-Marie Leclair. And the occasional addition of a violin to the stage provides an opportunity to marvel at the special character of its bigger sister by comparison.

During the 17th century, the term "Symphony" or "Sinfonia" was usually applied to the opening music for operas, oratorios and cantatas. But gradually, during the 18th century, the symphony developed to become the most important format for independent orchestral music. The formal proportions were dramatically expanded and the instrumentation refined and expanded, paving the way for the genre's dominant status in the Romantic period with composers such as Beethoven, Brahms and Mahler.

A native of Pittsburgh, Nicole Lamagna had long hoped to study at Carnegie Mellon School of Music. Nicole is in her second year pursuing a Masters of Music degree in Clarinet Performance. She feels very fortunate to be studying with former Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra clarinetist, Thomas Thompson. Her former teachers include Lisa Thackrah and Nolan Petote. Nicole received her Bachelor’s of Music degree in Music Education from Seton Hill University. Music education remains extremely important to her, and she is a proud co-conductor of the student-run Tartan Wind Ensemble.
