We enjoy being surprised by artistic excellence. That's why emerging artists like the Classical Music Marathon have long held a permanent place in our program. In 2021, one ensemble in particular shone when it presented itself at the marathon. "The Leonkoro Quartet has an enormous stage presence, is passionate about music, takes great risks, and astonishes with its sensitivity to the specific sonorities of the pieces," wrote the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung some time ago – and we gladly join in this celebration. Performing string quartets by Mozart, Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and Bosmans, the Leonkoro Quartet is a guest in this year's "Excellent!" series, having recently been highly recommended as the newly crowned winner of the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Award.

Burleigh, Henriëtte Bosmans, Gustav Mahler, Arnold Schoenberg, Alessandro Scarlatti, and a world premiere of a brand new song cycle by Carnegie Mellon School of Music Master's in composition student Emma Berkowitz.

The British cellist Raphael Wallfisch, son of Holocaust survivor and cellist Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, performs with pianist Simon Callaghan in major works by composers of diverse musical backgrounds and approaches who were caught up in the suffering and upheaval of the Second World War.

There are countless string quartets—both ensembles and works—but saxophone quartets? With this lineup, the MAAT Saxophone Quartet is making a name for itself. As the European Concert Hall Organization's "Rising Star," they will tour throughout Europe in the 2025/26 season. After eight sold-out children's concerts in 2024, they will also return to the Elbphilharmonie with a program that showcases the quartet's diversity, with arrangements ranging from string quartets to piano concertos.

Light and darkness intertwine in this evocative chamber music concert. Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet dedicated to his wife Clara, captures the passionate highs and deep lows of his life. Marion von Tilzer gives voice to Vilma Grunwald’s final letter from Auschwitz, its resignation echoed by mezzo-soprano Bella Adamova. Dutch composer Henriëtte Bosmans’ lyrical String Quartet, written before the Second World War upended her life, completes the programme. Subdued, poignant, yet impetuous, this concert invites reflection and stirs the soul.
