A dream made of brass – and a musical encounter of the highest order: Daniel Téllez Gutiérrez, principal trombonist of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, meets the world-renowned trombone legend Christian Lindberg. Together they present the world premiere of composer Andrea Tarrodi's captivating new double concerto – a work that will captivate and inspire you with the power and richness of sound of two outstanding soloists.
Alpesh Chauhan then guides you through Anton Bruckner's monumental 7th Symphony, which, with its sublime sound architecture, rises before you like an imposing cathedral.

Mozart’s Serenade No. 10 Gran Partita for 12 wind instruments and a double bass is, with its seven movements, rich in everything that is usually associated with the composer’s style; playfulness, contrasts, and virtuosity mixed with infectious melodies. When musicians from the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra take on this masterpiece, it is combined with the contemporary Swedish composer Andrea Tarrodi’s Serenade in Seven Colours, written with Gran Partita and the jazz trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Gil Evans’ album Quiet Nights from 1963 as sources of inspiration.

Music Director Ken-David Masur opens his phenomenal final season with a festive fanfare by Andrea Tarrodi. The celebration continues as the MSO raises a ruckus with R. Strauss’s tone poem Ein Heldenleben (“A Hero’s Life”), rife with, in the composer’s words, “lots of horns, horns being quite the thing to express heroism.” Ravel was determined not to make his Piano Concerto for the Left Hand feel like a thin parlor trick; its music is robust, demanding, and full of dramatic illusion. The MSO welcomes “one of the best pianists of his generation” (Philadelphia Inquirer), Stewart Goodyear, to perform this impressive concerto.

Season Opener: A Hero’s Life

Across centuries, Italy’s magnificent architecture and breathtaking landscapes have inspired countless artists. Respighi’s Fountains of Rome paints a Technicolor portrait of the Eternal City’s great fountains, while the seaside towns of the Liguria region are lovingly depicted in Swedish composer Andrea Tarrodi’s work by the same name. It was in that same region, in the rugged village of Rapallo, that Sibelius conceived his heroic Second Symphony.

Musical storytelling joy is one of the characteristics of this evening's conductor, Finnish Pekka Kuusisto. In the evening's masterpiece  Mother Goose Tales, the French composer Maurice Ravel gives a new and resonant form to fairy tales by the author Charles Perrault, where figures such as Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast appear in Ravel's unmistakably glittering orchestral attire.

The Swedish mezzo-soprano Nina Stemme has been one of the world's best voices for three decades, and not just on the opera stage. The singer, who is praised for her fulfilling expressive depth and her balsamic melody, is also an experience in the song repertoire, especially in the Gustav Mahler repertoire.

Sibelius's violin concerto is now the most performed of all violin concertos from the 20th century. Yet its musical language belongs to the late 19th century, and the music is warm and lyrical, dramatic and melancholic. Sibelius, himself a violinist, possibly wrote the concerto he himself would have wanted to play – albeit on a technical level far beyond his own. In this way, the violin concerto can be seen as a farewell to the youthful dreams of a career as a violin virtuoso. It is among the more challenging in the genre, as many violinists have attested.

Tchaikovsky composed his fifth symphony during a few summer months in 1888. He had complained of lacking inspiration in the spring: "Am I burned out? No ideas, no desire?" But the fifth became a vital, emotionally charged, and in many respects brilliant symphony. It premiered under the composer's direction at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in November of the same year.

### Mahler's Symphony No.4 - Kensington Symphony Orchestra

Join the Kensington Symphony Orchestra (KSO) for an enchanting evening of classical music at St John’s Smith Square. Under the baton of conductor Russell Keable, the orchestra will present a captivating program featuring works by Andrea Tarrodi, Grace Williams, and Gustav Mahler.

The evening will open with Andrea Tarrodi’s *Serenade in Seven Colours*, a vibrant piece for woodwind and percussion inspired by Mozart’s *Serenade for 13 Winds No.10, Gran Partita* and the jazz compositions of Miles Davis and Gil Evans. This kaleidoscopic showpiece transitions from shimmering textures to an explosion of color.

Next, the orchestra’s string section will perform Grace Williams’s *Sea Sketches*, a five-movement work that evokes the life and beauty of the sea. Written during World War II, this piece reflects Williams’s longing for her home in Barry, South Wales.

The highlight of the evening will be Mahler’s *Symphony No.4*, featuring soprano Monica McGhee. This four-movement symphony, known for its tuneful opening and the evocative scherzo depicting Death playing the violin, culminates in the finale with the song *Das himmlische Leben* (The Heavenly Life), presenting a child’s vision of heaven.

Mozart meets Miles Davis in this kaleidoscopic showpiece from contemporary Swedish composer Andrea Tarrodi. She draws influences from both iconic musicians in this sparkling piece, devised according to Tarrodi’s own unique colour palette: Serenade in Seven Colours transports you through purples to reds to yellows – via tendrils of melody and shimmering textures. Alongside Tarrodi’s Lucioles, inspired by the flight of fireflies, performed live in November, discover a magical and deeply moving sound world of sonorous wind and glittering percussion.

Sibelius’ Violin Concerto is one of the most played of all violin concertos composed in the twentieth century. Sibelius, himself a violinist, may have composed the concerto he would have wanted to play himself – even if it was at a technical level that far exceeded his own – in a farewell to his youthful dream of a career as a violin virtuoso. With the unparalleled Dutch violinist Janine Jansen, we can await a captivating, intense and emotional adventure.

Alongside his celebrated concerts in other cultural temples worldwide, Christian Schmitt has been our trusted »Principal Organist« for many years now. He is not the only one on the podium this afternoon, but together with musicians from the ranks of our orchestra, he creates magnificent sound effects – such as a work composed in 1976 referring to Marc Chagall: This painter-poet designed famous glass windows in iridescent colours in many places. The fascinating composition »Okna« by the Czech Petr Eben reflects his experiencing of Chagall‘s vitrage for the synagogue in Jerusalem. The piece is congenially encompassed by Bach's virtuoso music: the E-flat major prelude functions as an atmospheric overture, and the corresponding fugue follows as a masterful Baroque piece with three tightly interlocked themes. Trombone and organ then unite for the romantically-influenced »Morceau symphonique« by Alexandre Guilmant. The sparkling piece from 1902 captivates with its lyrical opening and its vibrant development with energetic, rocketing scales. Sofia Gubaidulina's 1978 sonata »Detto 1« is more spiritual – but the meditative lines also repeatedly produce heated cascades. Finally, the god of the seas symbolically makes his grand appearance: the impressive piece »Poseidon« was composed by the Swede Andrea Tarrodi in 2021. Everything here is in a state of flux with rising and falling sound masses.

Featuring the SFCM woodwind, brass and percussion students, and conducted by Brad Hogarth, the concert will also include guest brass quintet Brass Over Bridges joining the ensemble in a premiere performance of Transfigurations. Originally written for brass quintet and orchestra by SFCM faculty Stefan Cwik, Cwik rearranged the work specifically for the SFCM Wind Ensemble. The performance of the piece will also include projections of artwork by Mexican artist Eduardo Rodriguez Calzado.

Two of Sibelius’s most atmospheric works bookend this enterprising programme: the nationalistic fervour of his Karelia Suite and the rugged beauty of his last symphony. Beethoven’s rarely performed Triple Concerto provides an outstanding opportunity to hear three world-class soloists in a work of unexpected twists and turns and closing with a bravura finale. Completing the evening is a work by one of Sweden’s most exciting young composers. You can be sure Andrea Tarrodi’s Paradisfåglar II will leave a vivid impression.

Catherine Larsen-Maguire makes her debut with Ensemble 10:10, not only bringing music she is passionate about by Brett Dean, Andrea Tarrodi, Charlotte Bray and Jessie Montgomery, but also presenting gripping new sounds from Ailís Ní Ríain and Claire Victoria Roberts to carry on the ensemble’s inspiring tradition of commissioning composers from the North West.

Fast-rising Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska (now Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic) leads this arresting program, including the soul-filling Violin Concerto by Tchaikovsky played by Randall Goosby, who “plays like an angel with nothing to prove. A cool, calm, collected angel” (Los Angeles Times). To conclude, Stasevska leads one of Sibelius’ most performed symphonies, his Second, which combines high energy with long-limbed lyricism.

Doric Quartet’s members use specially made original-style bows for a more refined performance of Classical repertoire such as Haydn’s Quartet #23  which opens the program with its dramatic pauses and clever transitions. The inclusion of Andrea Tarrodi’s Light Scattering underscores the ensemble’s commitment to new music as well. Lastly, Beethoven’s Quartet #10 mirrors the transitions of his life at the time: his Scherzo echoes the heroic power of his Fifth Symphony and “Emperor” Piano Concerto (written with Napoleon in mind), while his tender Adagio gives us a first taste of the transcendence yet to come in future slow movements of his later quartets.

In the opera cabaret Jag är Ulla Winblad, the 18th century's most legendary and celebrated Stockholm woman gets to play the lead role in her own story. Behind the Folkoperan" class="css-u850">Folkoperan's anniversary performance is the super trio Klas Östergren, who wrote the libretto, the composer Andrea Tarrodi and the director Nora Nilsson. On stage, the actors Björn Kjellman and Hanna Dorsin meet with the Folkoperan's soloists and orchestra.

When an elderly Bellman (Björn Kjellman) seeks out “Ulla” (Hanna Dorsin) to say goodbye and perhaps reconcile, we are thrown back to the days of youth and the brutal 18th century Stockholm. Among bustling taverns and stinking alleys, the young beauty Maria Kristina Kjellström “Maja-Stina” (Tessan-Maria Lehmussaari) and the young star Carl Michael Bellman (Wiktor Sundqvist) meet.
