The programme will include Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 2 in D Major, a concerto with Haydn’s signature joy, humour and warmth and showcases Isserlis’ virtuosic skills. Also on the programme is Tchaikovsky’s Andante Cantabile, originally from his String Quartet No. 1 and arranged separately by the composer for cello and string orchestra. This gorgeous piece became famous in its own right separate to the quartet and is based on a folk song.

Franz Schubert composed his String Trio in B flat major, which, like his Symphony in B minor, remained a fragment. Together with his early string quartets, the string trio was also intended for music-making within the Schubert household: his brothers and his father played violins and cello, he himself played the viola. Some 60 years later, in his first string quartet Bedřich Smetana looks back on his life and describes both the happy moments of his youth and the "inevitable fate" of his deafness. The jubilant movement of the finale breaks off abruptly and a high note is heard in the 1st violin, with which Smetana translated the beginning of his hearing loss into music. The quartet ends in a resigned mood, without a glimmer of hope. Russian Late Romantic Anton Arensky broke up this classical quartet formation with his String Quartet No. 2, in which he played the cello instead of the violin. He composed the quartet in 1894 in memory of his deceased friend Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky. In addition to funeral hymns from the Russian Orthodox liturgy, the quartet also contains variations on Tchaikovsky’s children’s song Legenda.

Yet these distinct cultures sought profoundly different sounds: Anton Arensky and Sergei Rachmaninov bared the powerful soul of Russia, while Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy reveled in ethereal pleasures. Assistant Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra Andrew Grams, known for his “intensity, enthusiasm, and technical clarity,” in a program of four uniquely chosen masterpieces.  British composer Anna Clyne’s exuberant PIVOT (2021) walks us through Edinburgh’s boisterous Fringe Festival.  We are then treated to Mozart’s sublime Piano Concerto No. 23 with its magical middle Adagio, performed by award-winning Spanish/Dutch pianist, Albert Cano Smit, who has been lauded as “a moving young poet.”  We conclude with two great Russian composers: Anton Arensky with his little-known gem Intermezzo, and concluding with Prokofiev’s witty and beloved Classical Symphony.

Formed in 2022, TRIO SEOUL’s founding members, violinist Jinjoo Cho, Cellist Brannon Cho, and Pianist Kyu Yeon Kim, are winners and laureates of more than 20 international competitions and awards combined. The ensemble was formed with a mission to combine forces between three members who all identify as the 21st-century musician, actively performing in the world’s greatest concert halls while presenting creative projects in collaboration with artists of various fields, including composers, choreographers, writers, and visual artists. The city of Seoul is a dynamic symbol of the ensemble’s cultural roots as well as artistic intensity.

Five monumental Russian composers raise their voices in this concert. Tchaikovsky’s soaring and soulful melodies live on through this tribute from his disciple Anton Arensky. We feature Principal Cellist Moisés Molina in Rachmaninoff’s endless melody, the <i>Vocalise</i>. And writing in the year of the Russian Revolution, “bad boy” Prokofiev serves up a cheeky take on music’s classical roots.

CMSLC musicians return to close our 66th season with two pairs of works. First, Leclair’s challenging Sonata for Two Violins fuses Italian and French styles in an intimate melodic interplay; equally challenging and virtuosic is Viotti’s charming Duo for Two Violins.  The second pairing is Saint-Saëns’ youthful and exacting Piano Quintet, while Arensky’s is full of Russian (and French) flavor, considered by some a mature masterpiece.

Russian master Anton Arensky, teacher of Rachmaninoff, penned a sole quintet in his mature years, and the ever-popular French composer Camille Saint-Saëns began his prolific chamber music career with this early quintet of surprising skill and maturity. Captivating violin duos by virtuosi of the Baroque and Classical eras serve as effervescent preludes.
