It's a shame the composers can't meet in person this evening. It would certainly be entertaining to hear what the antipodes Brahms and Wagner would have to say to each other. While the musical theater reformer, who landed his first international hit with "Tannhäuser" in 1845, and the symphonists world-famous not only for his "Hungarian Dances" treated each other with at most mild malice, there had been a proverbial blowout between Brahms and Hugo Wolf. Brahms' attacks on his older colleague, which Wolf regularly published thereafter, were often amused to recount to his friends. But regardless of what one thought of the other, what one heard were nothing but masterpieces.

A native of Duluth, Minnesota, mezzo-soprano Georgia Jacobson’s recent engagements in the 2022-2023 season included debuts with Kentucky Opera as Tisbe (La Cenerentola) and Maggie (The Gift of the Magi), and Opera Santa Barbara, covering Lucilla (La scala di seta), and singing Margaret Johnson (The Light in the Piazza) and Waltraute (Die Walküre). Additionally, her 2022-2023 season included the roles of Hannah After (As One) and Lola (Cavalleria Rusticana) with Lyric Opera of the North. Jacobson returned to the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra as the mezzo-soprano soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, as well as debuting with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Chris Thile’s Attention.

The award-winning Simply Quartet made its debut at Konserthuset Stockholm in 2022 as one of the ECHO Rising Stars of the 2021/22 season. Eric Luebke is a fourth year music education student at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. As a singer, Eric has performed in the University Opera and in the community of Madison through solo and chamber performances with First United Methodist Church, Madison Youth Choirs, and Just Bach. Eric also plays piano, bass guitar, and percussion, and has worked at the UW–Madison Summer Music Clinic for three consecutive seasons. As a composer, Eric recently premiered his original work, “She Walks in Beauty,” featuring text by Lord Byron, with C8dence, a chamber ensemble at the university.

For Vladimir Balshin, cellist of the renowned Borodin Quartet, the Simply Quartet is "one of the most remarkable quartets of its generation." The ensemble established itself during their joint studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Their pursuit of the greatest possible fidelity to the original works—coupled with passionate dedication and exceptional musicality—has earned the quartet no fewer than four first prizes at prestigious chamber music competitions. As former ECHO Rising Stars, the four musicians now perform in Europe's most important concert halls, from London to Brussels to Amsterdam, and have also given guest performances overseas. They return to Salzburg with a top-notch classical chamber music program.

A toast to defiance! Nothing inspires creativity more than the will to resist. Take, for example, when Josef Suk writes variations on the secret national anthem of the Czechs on the eve of World War I. Or when Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach lets loose in his D minor concerto, while his employer, Frederick II, prefers galant tones. Further examples are the serenade with which Hugo Wolf responded to the failure of his overture to the opera "Penthesilea": a Mediterranean serenade with the motto "just don't let yourself be defeated." And the Opus 4 of the frustrated college student Benjamin Britten: His "Simple Symphony" consists of musical snippets he composed when he was 10 or 12 years old...

On the penultimate day of summer – a matinee under the sign of the sun: with works by Telemann, Haydn, and Wolf, the program explores the light in its diverse musical refractions. As an expression of courtly splendor under the "Sun King" Louis XIV, the overture suite shone far beyond France's borders. The genre also became extremely popular in Germany, not least thanks to the work of Georg Philipp Telemann. His overture suite "La Bizarre" combines French and Italian stylistic elements in an original way. From baroque radiance to classical transparency: two string quartets from Haydn's so-called "Sun Quartets," Op. 20, form a framework. The stormy G minor quartet forms a charming contrast to the gallantly serene A major quartet, which surprises with an artfully crafted final fugue.

Under the Italian sun: Every year the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra heads south, more precisely to Montepulciano - a picturesque little town near Siena. At the local Academy of Music and Performing Arts, the musicians study selected chamber music works, which are then presented to the Duisburg audience after returning home: the result of a concentrated rehearsal phase in a unique environment, made possible by the generous support of the Friends and Sponsors of the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra. With Hugo Wolf's "Italian Serenade", a work is on the program this time that couldn't be more fitting. Complemented by string quartets by Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

Founded in 1991 by four dynamic women at the Music Academy Franz Liszt in Weimar, the Klenke Quartet has never made changes to its lineup. The conclusion that this must be a case of perfect chemistry is absolutely justified. The four string players have retained their »smoldering« sound, which a critic identified early on in their career. Together with Annett Renneberg, who played Signorina Elettra in Donna Leon’s »Commissario Brunetti« adaptations for television, they will take the audience on a colorful journey entitled »And Venice, always Venice«: the actress, who wanted to be an opera singer early in her life, reads texts and poems about what might be Italy’s most famous city.

The always-evolving Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble features musicians from the legendary Met Orchestra in a variety of unique programs. Maria Solozobova-Neuenschwander was born in Moscow and now lives in Switzerland. After attending the Moscow music school "Gnessin" for highly gifted children, she completed her studies at the famous Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, with Prof. Zakhar Bron in Zurich and at the Basel Music Academy with Prof. Raphael Oleg "with distinction". While still a student, she was already working as first concertmaster with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. She is the winner of several renowned international music competitions.

She recently sang Wellgunde in Barrie Kosky’s new production of Das Rheingold at the Royal Opera House and will make her role debut as Carmen at the 2024 Buxton Festival. Her programme takes an avian theme.

Wilson now turns his attention to one of the giants of German literature and to what is surely Goethe’s greatest and most influential creation – known to music lovers from the innumerable song settings, operas, choral works and programmatic pieces it has inspired.

It is a popular romantic theme: the fine line between genius and madness. In Beethoven’s case, all one needs to do is look at the portrait of the agitated artist with tangled hair and crazy eyes, who jots his notes down on paper in a manic creative frenzy and in the face of impending deafness. Wolf was hospitalized twice – and died in the clinic. When Schumann was admitted to Endenich, “melancholy with delusion” was noted as a diagnosis in the admission book. And the Italian Renaissance prince Carlo Gesualdo was not only a gifted composer, but very probably also a murderer. In the chromatic descent at the end of his madrigal, we seem to hear the agony of a guilty man tormented by remorse. The result? Insanely brilliant music!

The Guadagnini String Quartet presents three unusual works. Wolf’s single-movement Italian Serenade leaves an impression of playful irony. Beethoven’s G Major Quartet, subtitled “Compliments” due to its elegant phrasing and mood, emerges as a charming and witty work grounded in 18th-century musical tradition. Grieg’s String Quartet in G Minor, one of only a handful of the composer’s large-scale compositions, stands as a supreme achievement and, in his own words, “strives towards breadth, soaring flight and, above all, resonance for the instruments for which it is written.”

Hope Metts is a soprano known for her flexible, silvery voice and her vivacious stage presence. Her most notable opera roles include Rose Maurrant in Weill’s Street Scene, Monica in Menotti’s The Medium, Mademoiselle Silberklang in Mozart's The Impresario, and Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. Hope’s future performances include scenes as Lucia from Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and Gilda from Verdi’s Rigoletto, as well as Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. She has participated in masterclasses with Sherrill Milnes, Susan Quittmeyer, and Morris Robinson. Hope has also studied and appeared in concert with Simon Estes. She was selected to be a Study Grant Artist with the Savannah VOICE Festival in 2022 and 2023, and was a featured soloist for the program’s 2022 VOICES in the Cathedral concert in Tarpon Springs, FL. Hope has also appeared as a soloist in Handel’s Messiah at the Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames, IA and Vivaldi’s Gloria with the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic Orchestra in Pittsburgh, PA. Hope is a graduate of Iowa State University and is currently pursuing her masters in vocal performance at Carnegie Mellon University with Maria Spacagna.

Among the world’s finest string quartets, the beloved Takács returns for two concerts this season. For its second concert this season, the Grammy and Gramophone Award-winning Berkeley favorite presents a stellar program of works covering a vast emotional terrain. Hugo Wolf’s tuneful Italian Serenade is balanced by Bartók’s awesome second quartet, which patiently unfolds in a long, almost spiritual dramatic arc. Schubert’s diabolically challenging final string quartet is a lesson in extremes of tone, texture, and tempo. The singular Takács has the range and focus to pull it all off seamlessly. “You will not hear better string quartet playing anywhere in the world today” (BBC Music Magazine).

Be swept away by a brilliantly wide-ranging program curated by rising-star classical singer Julia Bullock. With a voice “among today’s most expressive” (NPR), Bullock brings an arresting, often transformative emotional depth to songs both time-tested and obscure. Join us for an exquisite musical journey at the Winter Chamber Music Festival featuring the Ariel Quartet with Orion Weiss on piano. This captivating performance is scheduled for Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 3:00pm CST, taking place in the prestigious Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The Ariel Quartet, renowned for its virtuosity, insightful interpretations, and dynamic performances, will be joined by the exceptionally talented pianist Orion Weiss, known for his lush sound and passionate delivery.

The ensemble for this performance includes Alexandra Kazovsky and Gershon Gerchikov on violins, Jan Grüning on viola, Amit Even-Tov on cello, and Orion Weiss on piano. Together, they will present a program that promises to be both engaging and profound, featuring works by Hugo Wolf, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Dmitri Shostakovich. The repertoire includes Wolf's Italian Serenade, Beethoven's String Quartet in A Major, Op. 18, No. 5, and Shostakovich's Piano Quintet in G Minor, Op. 57.

The Modigliani Quartet is a French-based ensemble founded by four close friends in 2003 after their studies at the Paris Conservatory. Today they are recognized as one of the most in-demand string quartets in the world, with annual tours to the United States and Asia, and a discography of 15 prize-winning albums. Their European tours have taken them to the Paris Philharmonie, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Saint-Petersburg Philharmonia and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

The Paris based Quatuor Modigliani, founded in 2003, is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2023. It is a regular guest at the world’s top venues and finest String Quartet and Chamber Music series. In 2017 it was a special honor for the quartet to be the first string quartet ever performing in the big hall of the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. In 2020, the quartet became artistic director of the string quartet festival “Quatuors à Bordeaux” as well as the renowned “The Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition”.

For the Quatuor Modigliani’s anniversary celebration, Jean Frédéric Neuburger composed a new string quartet that will be performed throughout Europe in the upcoming anniversary season 2022/2023, including concerts in Madrid, Warsaw, Paris and London. Since the past season, the quartet has been focusing on the composer Franz Schubert’s 225th anniversary in 2022 and will maintain this focus also in the new season with e.g. a three-part Schubert-cycle at the Musikfest Hamburg in May 2023. Other highlights include an extensive US Tour in April 2023 or performances at the Philharmonic Halls in Luxembourg, Köln and Oslo.

“An eminent ambassador of the Italian quartet culture” (Fono Forum) and an ensemble of international excellence, Quartetto di Cremona makes its PCMS debut with a beautiful program of 19th and early 20th century quartets. The tuneful colors and rhythmic animation of Wolf’s Italian Serenade and Ravel’s Quartet in F Major lead to the haunting, epic majesty of Beethoven’s Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132.

Every Carnegie Hall debut is a notable event, and recitals in the intimate Weill Recital Hall can be especially powerful for artist and audience alike. Simon Bode is an acclaimed tenor whose “voice radiates a charisma and intensity that requires no reinforcement” (Bachtrack), and in this recital debut he performs a program of 19th-century art song and opera, including works by Wagner, Duparc, Liszt, and Wolf.

Quartetto di Cremona is one of the 21st century’s preeminent string quartets. Hailing from Cremona, Italy—home to luthiers such as Stradivari, Guarneri, and members of the Rugeri and Amati families—they are internationally acclaimed for their exquisite sound, striking cohesion, and expansive repertoire. In this Carnegie Hall debut, they open with Wolf’s jaunty Italian Serenade, followed by Ravel’s sole string quartet, a chamber repertory favorite. The quartet then treats audiences to a late Beethoven string quartet, showcasing their treatment of the composer’s works that has been called “mastery … a glory” (The Herald).

“Our opening concert of the 2023/2024 season features an extraordinary premiere of a piano work that was commissioned for SCMR and composed by the internationally renowned composer, Richard Danielpour. The RPO string principals will follow the premiere with the lush Brahms C minor Quartet.”
