The Irish mezzo studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin under Veronica Dunne before moving on to the Opera Studio at the Bavarian State Opera from 2016 to 2018. She is a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist for 2023-5, during which time she will debut at major recital venues including Wigmore Hall. She recently sang Wellgunde in Barrie Kosky’s new production of Das Rheingold at the Royal Opera House and will make her role debut as Carmen at the 2024 Buxton Festival. Her programme takes an avian theme.

This event sees the launch of Goethe: His Faustian Life (Bloomsbury Continuum), the new book by a leading literary figure of our time whose wide range has already taken in studies of Milton, Tolstoy, Dickens, CS Lewis and Iris Murdoch. A.N. Wilson now turns his attention to one of the giants of German literature and to what is surely Goethe’s greatest and most influential creation – known to music lovers from the innumerable song settings, operas, choral works and programmatic pieces it has inspired.

It is a popular romantic theme: the fine line between genius and madness. In Beethoven’s case, all one needs to do is look at the portrait of the agitated artist with tangled hair and crazy eyes, who jots his notes down on paper in a manic creative frenzy and in the face of impending deafness. Wolf was hospitalized twice – and died in the clinic. When Schumann was admitted to Endenich, “melancholy with delusion” was noted as a diagnosis in the admission book. And the Italian Renaissance prince Carlo Gesualdo was not only a gifted composer, but very probably also a murderer. In the chromatic descent at the end of his madrigal, we seem to hear the agony of a guilty man tormented by remorse. The result? Insanely brilliant music!

The Guadagnini String Quartet presents three unusual works. Wolf’s single-movement Italian Serenade leaves an impression of playful irony. Beethoven’s G Major Quartet, subtitled “Compliments” due to its elegant phrasing and mood, emerges as a charming and witty work grounded in 18th-century musical tradition. Grieg’s String Quartet in G Minor, one of only a handful of the composer’s large-scale compositions, stands as a supreme achievement and, in his own words, “strives towards breadth, soaring flight and, above all, resonance for the instruments for which it is written.”

Sweeter than Roses: Songs of Teta’s Garden is all about love, beauty, nature, childhood, innocence, heartbreak, and joy. This recital includes a Persian folk song written by Nicole’s dear friend, Leila Gottlieb Hedayati, music by Lebanese icon, Fairouz, and many other French, English, Italian, and German art songs. She is beyond excited to collaborate with James O’Malley Gorbea on guitar and Viviana Antonio on the cello as well. This recital is dedicated to Nicole’s family, Lebanon, and the many summers she has spent there throughout her life.

Hope Metts is a soprano known for her flexible, silvery voice and her vivacious stage presence. Her most notable opera roles include Rose Maurrant in Weill’s Street Scene, Monica in Menotti’s The Medium, Mademoiselle Silberklang in Mozart's The Impresario, and Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. Hope’s future performances include scenes as Lucia from Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and Gilda from Verdi’s Rigoletto, as well as Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. She has participated in masterclasses with Sherrill Milnes, Susan Quittmeyer, and Morris Robinson. Hope has also studied and appeared in concert with Simon Estes. She was selected to be a Study Grant Artist with the Savannah VOICE Festival in 2022 and 2023, and was a featured soloist for the program’s 2022 VOICES in the Cathedral concert in Tarpon Springs, FL. Hope has also appeared as a soloist in Handel’s Messiah at the Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames, IA and Vivaldi’s Gloria with the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic Orchestra in Pittsburgh, PA. Hope is a graduate of Iowa State University and is currently pursuing her masters in vocal performance at Carnegie Mellon University with Maria Spacagna.

Among the world’s finest string quartets, the beloved Takács returns for two concerts this season. For its second concert this season, the Grammy and Gramophone Award-winning Berkeley favorite presents a stellar program of works covering a vast emotional terrain. Hugo Wolf’s tuneful Italian Serenade is balanced by Bartók’s awesome second quartet, which patiently unfolds in a long, almost spiritual dramatic arc. Schubert’s diabolically challenging final string quartet is a lesson in extremes of tone, texture, and tempo. The singular Takács has the range and focus to pull it all off seamlessly. “You will not hear better string quartet playing anywhere in the world today” (BBC Music Magazine).

The Modigliani Quartet is a French-based ensemble founded by four close friends in 2003 after their studies at the Paris Conservatory. Today they are recognized as one of the most in-demand string quartets in the world, with annual tours to the United States and Asia, and a discography of 15 prize-winning albums. Their European tours have taken them to the Paris Philharmonie, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Saint-Petersburg Philharmonia and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

The Paris based Quatuor Modigliani, founded in 2003, is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2023. It is a regular guest at the world’s top venues and finest String Quartet and Chamber Music series. In 2017 it was a special honor for the quartet to be the first string quartet ever performing in the big hall of the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. In 2020, the quartet became artistic director of the string quartet festival “Quatuors à Bordeaux” as well as the renowned “The Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition”.

For the Quatuor Modigliani’s anniversary celebration, Jean Frédéric Neuburger composed a new string quartet that will be performed throughout Europe in the upcoming anniversary season 2022/2023, including concerts in Madrid, Warsaw, Paris and London. Since the past season, the quartet has been focusing on the composer Franz Schubert’s 225th anniversary in 2022 and will maintain this focus also in the new season with e.g. a three-part Schubert-cycle at the Musikfest Hamburg in May 2023. Other highlights include an extensive US Tour in April 2023 or performances at the Philharmonic Halls in Luxembourg, Köln and Oslo.

“An eminent ambassador of the Italian quartet culture” (Fono Forum) and an ensemble of international excellence, Quartetto di Cremona makes its PCMS debut with a beautiful program of 19th and early 20th century quartets. The tuneful colors and rhythmic animation of Wolf’s Italian Serenade and Ravel’s Quartet in F Major lead to the haunting, epic majesty of Beethoven’s Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132.

Every Carnegie Hall debut is a notable event, and recitals in the intimate Weill Recital Hall can be especially powerful for artist and audience alike. Simon Bode is an acclaimed tenor whose “voice radiates a charisma and intensity that requires no reinforcement” (Bachtrack), and in this recital debut he performs a program of 19th-century art song and opera, including works by Wagner, Duparc, Liszt, and Wolf.

Quartetto di Cremona is one of the 21st century’s preeminent string quartets. Hailing from Cremona, Italy—home to luthiers such as Stradivari, Guarneri, and members of the Rugeri and Amati families—they are internationally acclaimed for their exquisite sound, striking cohesion, and expansive repertoire. In this Carnegie Hall debut, they open with Wolf’s jaunty Italian Serenade, followed by Ravel’s sole string quartet, a chamber repertory favorite. The quartet then treats audiences to a late Beethoven string quartet, showcasing their treatment of the composer’s works that has been called “mastery … a glory” (The Herald).

Elbphilharmonie Hamburg

The always-evolving Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble features musicians from the legendary Met Orchestra in a variety of unique programs. Together, along with special guest artists from the Metropolitan Opera and beyond, they explore a boundless world of chamber music, adapting to fit the instrumental needs of any piece—from all-time classics to hard-to-find hidden gems and standout works by many of today’s significant composers. In this performance, the ensemble treats listeners to an “Italian Serenade.”
