The Franco-Belgian cellist Camille Thomas has been making music with radiant, instinctive joy since age four. Her deeply expressive performances—marked by a rare blend of technical refinement and emotional immediacy—have made her one of the most compelling artists of her generation. Highlights of the 2025–26 season include performances with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Orchestra della Svizzera italiana, Taiwan Philharmonic, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Residentie Orkest, Bochum Symphony Orchestra, and a five-city tour with Euskadiko Orkestra. In October 2025 Thomas curated a week of Paris-inspired concerts at the Viva Cello Festival in Switzerland. She embarked on a North American recital tour with pianist-composer Julien Brocal and continues to tour with clarinetist YOM.

Praised for their “tremendous variety of color” (The Strad) and the “cohesion and intonation one might expect from an ensemble twice their age” (Third Coast Review), the American-Canadian-Taiwanese Callisto Quartet has quickly risen to international acclaim as one of the most accomplished quartets of their generation. Since their inception in 2016, the Callisto Quartet has garnered top prizes in nearly every major international chamber music competition. Grand Prize winners of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and Second Prize Winners of the Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Callisto Quartet has also taken home prizes from the Bordeaux, Melbourne, and Wigmore Hall competitions. The Callisto Quartet maintains a busy touring schedule, appearing across Europe, Australia, Central America, and North America at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Wigmore Hall. This summer, Orchestre de l’Agora presents a series of three open-air and regional concerts featuring the program Fiddlers and Northern Folklores, under the direction of Nicolas Ellis. Joined by guest fiddlers Alexis Chartrand and Nicolas Babineau, the ensemble revisits traditional Quebec dances through original orchestrations, juxtaposing them with works by Grieg, Sibelius, Marcus Goddard, and Danish tunes from the Danish String Quartet. By blending traditional music with orchestral writing, this initiative celebrates the vitality of Quebec’s musical heritage while giving it a fresh perspective. The festival is thrilled to present one of the most exciting emerging instrumental talents, Greek pianist Theodosia Ntokou, who has counted Martha Argerich as her mentor since 2009. Theodosia joins the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra for all the fresh air, spontaneity and adventure of one of the central piano concertos of the literature, that by Edvard Grieg – followed here by Rachmaninov’s symphony of infernal whirlwinds, passionate declarations of love and heartfelt longing for peace.

Following our captivating performance at Halifax Minster in 2025, we are delighted to return to Halifax as part of our ongoing commitment to Culturedale and our work with UNESCO’s Seeds of Hope initiative.

As echoes of The Lark Ascending continue to resonate across the town, we look forward to bringing another vibrant programme of string repertoire to the Victoria Theatre, celebrating the very best of English music alongside inspiring works from around the world. The programme includes Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Greensleeves, Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, and Grieg’s much-loved Holberg Suite.

We are especially pleased to premiere a new arrangement of Malcolm Arnold’s English Dances and to share the stage with talented young musicians from the Calderdale Music Youth Ensemble. This special concert provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase our award-winning work with schools and community groups across the region before we return to Calderdale again in August.

An exclusive evening of chamber music awaits the audience at Paliesius Manor, where the depth of romanticism and the courage of contemporary music will meet. Pianist Donaldas Račys, professor at the VMU Academy of Music, and Israeli violinist Evgenia Epshtein will appear on stage - performers distinguished by mature interpretation, a sensitive sense of musical dialogue, and broad artistic horizons. In the second part of the concert, two prominent personalities of the Lithuanian music scene will join: percussionist Arkadijus Gotesmanas and bassist Eugenijus Kanevičius. Alexander Malofeev's debut was brilliant! The pianist stepped in for the ill Evgeny Kissin at a concert of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra - and the audience could hardly contain itself. The Frankfurt audience rewarded Malofeev's virtuoso playing with thunderous applause, not so much for its power as for its melody and transparency. It was high time for the 23-year-old to give a recital at the Alte Oper. Malofeev readily admits that he feels most at home alone on stage. He then gives an insight into his world of sound: "It's always my own space, even when hundreds of people are listening. I let them in. I like to create my own space. In the Mozart Hall, Malofeev creates a sound space that spans Scandinavia, France, Vienna and his Russian homeland: Characteristic pieces glowing in intense colours.

The Norwegian string queen chose not only a violin concerto but also a harpsichord concerto, massaged into string music. And then there are Mendelssohn's string symphonies, brimming with youthful exuberance, and the Holberg Suite, in which Grieg proves that the spirit of Bach lingers even in the Far North.

He was not yet 15 years old when Mendelssohn Bartholdy was already able to present twelve short so-called string symphonies. They were already far more than compositional finger exercises and caused open-mouthed performances at the distinguished concerts in his parents' garden hall (with professional musicians from the royal court orchestra!). Kensington Symphony Orchestra returns to Cadogan Hall to perform Nielsen’s Fifth Symphony (1922), likened by the composer to “the division of dark and light, the battle between evil and good”.

Alternately explosive and calm, the work features a famous battle between the orchestra and a snare drummer, who is instructed to improvise “as though determined at all costs to stop the progress of the orchestra”.

KSO is joined by former BBC Young Musician keyboard finalist Firoze Madon for Grieg’s much-loved Piano Concerto (1868), written when the composer was just 24. A lyrical Andante is bookended by a dramatic Allegro and an energetic Finale, both featuring motifs influenced by Norwegian folk music.

Canadian Larysa Kuzmenko composed Fantasy on a Theme by Beethoven in celebration of his birthday. Haydn’s high-spirited and dramatic Cello Concerto No. 1 remained undiscovered for two centuries until its chance 1961 find at the Czech National Library. Fittingly, Grieg’s four charming Symphonic Dances, inspired by Norwegian folk, played a key role in formalizing Norway’s national identity.

Camille Thomas’ rich, yet elegant, sound and effortless virtuosity make her an audience favorite around the world—and bring her back for her second Cliburn Concerts appearance. The Franco-Belgian artist was the first cellist in more than 40 years (and first-ever female cellist) signed to Deutsche Grammophon; was named to the Forbes 30 under 30 – Europe Art & Culture; and was the European Broadcasting Union’s “New Talent of the Year 2014.” Her 2023 release The Chopin Project has been streamed more that 10 million times. In her return to the Kimbell stage, she collaborates with French pianist Julien Brocal, BBC Music Magazine’s 2018 Revelation of the Year.

With its mixture of German Romanticism and Norwegian folklore, Grieg's piano concerto not only delighted audiences at the time. Franz Liszt was also fascinated by the Nordic dance-like tone and the lush melodic arcs: a musical excursion into the Scandinavian expanse and atmospheric natural landscapes. Afterwards, another Romantic masterpiece will be heard when the audience is transported to the "New World" of America with Dvořák's 9th Symphony, where the Czech composer found inspiration for his composition.

Make way for the under-30 generation! Every season, highly talented young musicians from Northern Germany have the opportunity to perform with the Hamburg Camerata in the exquisite Recital Hall of the Elbphilharmonie. Youthful energy, fresh motivation, and a healthy dose of positive excitement make these concerts a truly special and intense musical experience. This season, the program features 15-year-old horn player Paul Scheffler and 24-year-old cellist Oskar Meier, both scholarship recipients of the German Foundation for Musical Life, as well as 25-year-old violinist and conductor Doğa Çetin.

Dmitri Kabalevsky’s quirky, lighthearted The Comedians was originally incidental music for a children’s play. It has become one of his best-loved works, and it is the springboard for the creativity of our puppeteering friends at Huntsville M.E.T. in this year’s FREE Family Concert, open to the entire community. Also on the program are two well-known short pieces by Edvard Grieg, and a reprise of Bizet’s Children’s Games from earlier in the concert season. It’s a fantastically fun way to introduce families and youngsters to the symphony orchestra! The performance is preceded by musical games and activities in the concert hall lobby. All ages are welcome.

Theatre artists have a real problem with Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt . This dramatic poem, with its episodic structure and use of fantastical elements, posed a challenge for the stage designers, but it turns out to be ideal material for a ballet performance. In 2015, the choreography for Peer Gynt was created by the Slovenian dancer of Romanian origin, Edward Clug. The premiere in Maribor was a huge success, and the ballet later traveled to Zurich, Vienna, Dortmund, Hanover, and Leipzig. What accounts for the production's popularity? Above all, it doesn't shy away from the original's fragmented narrative, leaving the significance of the protagonist's individual adventures unsaid, and above all, it employs a remarkably contemporary visual language, avoiding treating Ibsen's drama as a dusty old fairy tale inspired by folklore.

Michelle Cann, lauded as “exquisite” by The Philadelphia Inquirer, joins the PSO for Edvard Grieg’s majestic piano concerto. Jessie Montgomery’s Records from a Vanishing City is based on her recollections of the music that surrounded her as she grew up on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in the 1980s and 1990s. Ludwig van Beethoven’s second symphony, one of his lesser-known works, brims with positivity.

A quartet of guitars is far from a standard ensemble, yet the Prague Guitar Quartet has been delighting audiences with this unusual format for over forty years. Known for reimagining works originally written for other instruments, they bring listeners into their unique sound world. This concert will include, amongst other works, Grieg’s famous suite from the music to Peer Gynt. A new piece written especially for the group by Lukáš Hurník will also receive its first performance.

When Edvard Grieg set music to Henrik Ibsen's play, Peer Gynt , in 1875, he also set music to the folk soul of his own nation. The catchy movements about the blissful morning mood, Dovregubben , Solveig , Anitra and all the others are among Norway's most beloved tunes. Thomas Dausgaard has himself composed a suite of nine movements from the complete play's music.

Grieg’s beloved and unabashedly Romantic Piano Concerto, performed by Yeol Eum Son, dances and dazzles and reflects a time of personal happiness in the composer’s life. A combination of beguiling melodies and bravura fire, it found inspiration in the rhythmic patterns of Norwegian folk dances. Maestro Danzmayr also leads Stenhammar’s Second Symphony, a Romantic Swedish jewel not heard nearly often enough. Plus, Sibelius’ stirring The Swan of Tuonela joins this Nordic musical banquet, inspired by scenes from Finnish mythology.

Anyone who wins the junior section of the legendary International Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 13 is under special scrutiny. Even ten years later, Alexander Malofeev continues to fulfill the associated expectations with flying colors. Since then, the Russian, dubbed a "world revolution on the piano" by the Wiener Standard, has collected numerous other prizes and performed with the world's greatest orchestras. In 2022, he stood in for Yevgeny Kissin with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. "The audience went wild with enthusiasm," wrote the Frankfurter Rundschau. At the Elbphilharmonie, the still only 23-year-old now devotes himself to both the grand masters of Russian piano music and darkly shimmering works from Northern Europe.
