Research supports our experience that live music benefits people living with dementia by stimulating memories, reducing agitation and stress and improving communication between residents and staff.

Norman Krieger, a native of Los Angeles, is widely recognized as one of the leading pianists of his generation, praised for his technical mastery, expressive depth, and refined artistry. Celebrated by the Los Angeles Times for his precision and musical nuance, Krieger has performed with esteemed conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Leonard Slatkin, and Michael Tilson Thomas, and has appeared with major orchestras including the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics, the Chicago Symphony, and the National Symphony. Felix Mendelssohn fell in love with Scotland on holiday and the resulting musical inspiration produced two of his best-known and loved works, the Hebrides Overture and his Third Symphony, nicknamed Scottish. Join Maestro Stephen Alltop and the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra for an engaging and interactive program that will allow students to become composers, making decisions about instrumental sounds and colors. Students will enjoy favorite movements from Georges Bizet’s Carmen, Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite and the Sicilienne by Gabriel Fauré.

The Desert Community Orchestra will perform Nations, Narratives, and Cultures concert at Burrough High School Parker Performing Arts Center. The concert will present powerful musical voices of Europe and the Americas, highlighting nation-building and cultural identity through iconic orchestral works. Featured is Schubert’s Symphony in B minor, The Unfinished Symphony, Danzón No. 2 by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, a celebrated symbol of Mexican music and culture. Sibelius’s Finlandia, Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, and Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No. 5.

Andrew Loveland, from Los Angeles California, will be conducting. He is a Guatemalan-American cellist and conductor from Los Angeles, CA. With over ten years of performing and teaching experience, Mr. Loveland brings a unique experience to his interpretations and performances on the podium.

Camille Thomas’ rich, yet elegant, sound and effortless virtuosity make her an audience favorite around the world—and bring her back for her second Cliburn Concerts appearance. The Franco-Belgian artist was the first cellist in more than 40 years (and first-ever female cellist) signed to Deutsche Grammophon; was named to the Forbes 30 under 30 – Europe Art & Culture; and was the European Broadcasting Union’s “New Talent of the Year 2014.” Her 2023 release The Chopin Project has been streamed more that 10 million times. In her return to the Kimbell stage, she collaborates with French pianist Julien Brocal, BBC Music Magazine’s 2018 Revelation of the Year.

With its mixture of German Romanticism and Norwegian folklore, Grieg's piano concerto not only delighted audiences at the time. Franz Liszt was also fascinated by the Nordic dance-like tone and the lush melodic arcs: a musical excursion into the Scandinavian expanse and atmospheric natural landscapes. Afterwards, another Romantic masterpiece will be heard when the audience is transported to the "New World" of America with Dvořák's 9th Symphony, where the Czech composer found inspiration for his composition.

Make way for the under-30 generation! Every season, highly talented young musicians from Northern Germany have the opportunity to perform with the Hamburg Camerata in the exquisite Recital Hall of the Elbphilharmonie. Youthful energy, fresh motivation, and a healthy dose of positive excitement make these concerts a truly special and intense musical experience. This season, the program features 15-year-old horn player Paul Scheffler and 24-year-old cellist Oskar Meier, both scholarship recipients of the German Foundation for Musical Life, as well as 25-year-old violinist and conductor Doğa Çetin.

Dmitri Kabalevsky’s quirky, lighthearted The Comedians was originally incidental music for a children’s play. It has become one of his best-loved works, and it is the springboard for the creativity of our puppeteering friends at Huntsville M.E.T. in this year’s FREE Family Concert, open to the entire community. Also on the program are two well-known short pieces by Edvard Grieg, and a reprise of Bizet’s Children’s Games from earlier in the concert season. It’s a fantastically fun way to introduce families and youngsters to the symphony orchestra! The performance is preceded by musical games and activities in the concert hall lobby. All ages are welcome.

Theatre artists have a real problem with Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt . This dramatic poem, with its episodic structure and use of fantastical elements, posed a challenge for the stage designers, but it turns out to be ideal material for a ballet performance. In 2015, the choreography for Peer Gynt was created by the Slovenian dancer of Romanian origin, Edward Clug. The premiere in Maribor was a huge success, and the ballet later traveled to Zurich, Vienna, Dortmund, Hanover, and Leipzig. What accounts for the production's popularity? Above all, it doesn't shy away from the original's fragmented narrative, leaving the significance of the protagonist's individual adventures unsaid, and above all, it employs a remarkably contemporary visual language, avoiding treating Ibsen's drama as a dusty old fairy tale inspired by folklore.

Michelle Cann, lauded as “exquisite” by The Philadelphia Inquirer, joins the PSO for Edvard Grieg’s majestic piano concerto. Jessie Montgomery’s Records from a Vanishing City is based on her recollections of the music that surrounded her as she grew up on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in the 1980s and 1990s. Ludwig van Beethoven’s second symphony, one of his lesser-known works, brims with positivity.

A quartet of guitars is far from a standard ensemble, yet the Prague Guitar Quartet has been delighting audiences with this unusual format for over forty years. Known for reimagining works originally written for other instruments, they bring listeners into their unique sound world. This concert will include, amongst other works, Grieg’s famous suite from the music to Peer Gynt. A new piece written especially for the group by Lukáš Hurník will also receive its first performance.

When Edvard Grieg set music to Henrik Ibsen's play, Peer Gynt , in 1875, he also set music to the folk soul of his own nation. The catchy movements about the blissful morning mood, Dovregubben , Solveig , Anitra and all the others are among Norway's most beloved tunes. Thomas Dausgaard has himself composed a suite of nine movements from the complete play's music.

Grieg’s beloved and unabashedly Romantic Piano Concerto, performed by Yeol Eum Son, dances and dazzles and reflects a time of personal happiness in the composer’s life. A combination of beguiling melodies and bravura fire, it found inspiration in the rhythmic patterns of Norwegian folk dances. Maestro Danzmayr also leads Stenhammar’s Second Symphony, a Romantic Swedish jewel not heard nearly often enough. Plus, Sibelius’ stirring The Swan of Tuonela joins this Nordic musical banquet, inspired by scenes from Finnish mythology.

Anyone who wins the junior section of the legendary International Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 13 is under special scrutiny. Even ten years later, Alexander Malofeev continues to fulfill the associated expectations with flying colors. Since then, the Russian, dubbed a "world revolution on the piano" by the Wiener Standard, has collected numerous other prizes and performed with the world's greatest orchestras. In 2022, he stood in for Yevgeny Kissin with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. "The audience went wild with enthusiasm," wrote the Frankfurter Rundschau. At the Elbphilharmonie, the still only 23-year-old now devotes himself to both the grand masters of Russian piano music and darkly shimmering works from Northern Europe.

Give Me Your Stars explores the profound and diverse beauty of music inspired by the heavens, human connection, and the places we call home. At its heart is Lucy Walker’s eponymous new work, written for VOCES8, which captures the delicate balance between celestial wonder and the deep, personal connections that make us human.

The programme spans centuries of choral music, from the luminous polyphony of Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Regina caeli to timeless jazz standards. Along the way, we encounter the reflective sentiments of Eric Whitacre’s All Seems Beautiful to Me and Ola Gjeilo’s Ubi caritas, folk traditions in Danny Boy and Michael McGlynn’s Dúlamán, and evocative tales of cities and starlight in April in Paris and New York, New York.

This Scandinavian programme opens with Esa-Pekka Salonen’s enigmatic Helix, described by the composer as a spiralling ‘nine-minute accelerando’. In 1926, Düsseldorf opened what was then the world's largest planetarium. Exactly 100 years later, we celebrate this with music that reaches as far into the heavens as it does into the depths of human emotion. The spectacular opening is Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1, which impressively demonstrates the unimaginable range of musical languages ​​that can span between nostalgic retrospection and passionate anticipation of the future. Edvard Grieg's popular Peer Gynt Suites then take you on an "elegiac expedition" where you witness a sunrise that, since its composition, has confidently been considered the most magnificent example since the birth of mankind. And because Peer Gynt never completely leaves his Norwegian homeland, original sounds from the north resound with Ragnhild Hemsing's Hardanger fiddle. Gordon Hamilton – Green Monday audience favorite – composed a rousing concerto for her, the premiere of which perfectly rounds off the concert.

A long tradition of Christmas concerts connects the Regensburg Cathedral Choir and the Munich Radio Orchestra. And when the renowned lieder singer Benjamin Appl joins the choir, the former Cathedral Choir member meets "his" choir – the perfect setting for an atmospheric Wednesday evening with Christmas classics such as Peter Cornelius's "The Kings," the most beautiful excerpts from Bach's Christmas Oratorio, and many other heartfelt songs, choral pieces, and well-known melodies.

The young Swedish-Norwegian violinist Johan Dalene has long demonstrated that virtuoso violin music is also at home in Northern Europe. As one of the world's most sought-after young artists, he champions the composers of his Scandinavian homeland. He recorded the album "Nordic Rhapsody" with pianist Christian Ihle Hadland, on which the two immerse themselves entirely in the Nordic soundscape, sometimes light-heartedly, sometimes profoundly. He also presented the violin concerto by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen at his acclaimed Elbphilharmonie concert last year.

Three Scandinavian composers, three stops on an existential journey: Jean Sibelius opens with the "Scene with Cranes" from his incidental music to Järnefelt's "Kuolema" ("Death"). Here, the image of nature and the motif of death merge into a quiet vision of transition, in which the cranes appear as a peaceful escort between this world and the next. Wilhelm Stenhammar's concert overture "Excelsior!", in contrast, sparkles with vitality: a youthful manifesto, untamed and full of the spirit of optimism. Ibsen's "Peer Gynt," for which Edvard Grieg wrote his world-famous incidental music, extends the spectrum further—a life parable of self-realization and escape from responsibility, all the way to love and redemption.

In its autumn program, the Rhein-Ruhr Philharmonie focuses on this special atmosphere, which the "sound poets of the North" uniquely translate into music. Carl Nielsen, Johan Svendsen, Hugo Alfvén, Jean Sibelius, and Edvard Grieg draw on a rich repertoire of folk music, ancient myths, and legends.

The program concludes with Mendelssohn’s effervescent Italian Symphony, capturing the vibrant culture of Italy.
