Now she’s decided to retire, and for this, her very last public concert, she comes home to the place where it all began: Liverpool. “I have enjoyed the most wonderful and fulfilling career,” she says. Andris Nelsons and our two summer 2024 Tanglewood Music Center Conducting Fellows share this concert of Norwegian and Finnish works. Argentine pianist Sergio Tiempo is soloist in the Norwegian Edvard Grieg’s fiery Piano Concerto, paired with the composer’s delightful Holberg Suite, based on Baroque dances. Jean Sibelius composed Finlandia pointedly to elevate Finnish national feeling, and it succeeded wonderfully, becoming one of his most popular works. His late single-movement Seventh Symphony is the ultimate expression of his personal musical language.

Edvard Grieg's Holberg Suite stands as a masterpiece within the realm of neoclassical composition, reflecting the composer's profound admiration for the Baroque era while infusing it with his unique Nordic sensibility. Composed in 1884 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the renowned Danish-Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg, the suite showcases Grieg's ability to blend historical forms with his own distinctive voice.

The suite is comprised of five movements, each offering a delightful exploration of Baroque dance forms imbued with Grieg's characteristic lush harmonies and melodic inventiveness. The first movement, "Praeludium," opens the suite with a stately introduction, evoking the grandeur of the Baroque period while introducing motifs that will recur throughout the work. Following the prelude, the suite unfolds with the lively "Sarabande," characterized by its graceful triple meter and intricate interplay of melodic lines. Grieg's skillful orchestration brings a vibrant energy to this movement, capturing the spirit of the dance form while infusing it with his own expressive flair.

We begin with Michael Stern making his MSO debut as guest conductor leading Jonathan Leshnoff’s Rush for Orchestra, a driving and exciting work that builds a tremendous amount of energy throughout. Garrick Ohlsson, an audience and orchestra favorite, makes his eighth appearance with us performing Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto, a romantic masterpiece infused with the spirit of his Norwegian homeland. Dmitri Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No. 5, which he humbly described as “the practical answer of a Soviet artist to justified criticism” in a subtle and bitter reaction to the Russia of Joseph Stalin, brings this concert to a close.

We celebrate the anniversary of a format that we, as well as the participating writers and our audience, love: The »Slam Symphony« returns for the 10th time – and the composition it revolves around this season is ideally suited to creative imagination of the word acrobats: Under the baton of Taichi Fukumura, who came second in our Mahler Competition in 2023, we delve into the Nordic world – which is characterised by stories from times long forgotten, poems and ballads as well as mythical figures. Edvard Grieg loved the country of the fjords and often worked obsessively in ivy-covered huts such as his lonely summer house »Troldhaugen«, which translates as »Hill of the Trolls«. The music to »Peer Gynt« is his signature work – based on Henrik Ibsen’s dramatic model, which he created with the help of Norwegian fairy tales: a story about a dreamer who uses fantastical tall tales to avoid reality and only realises late in life that only love will save him. Grieg’s setting describes this path of the »Faust of the North« with musical images of wild, romantic fantasticism. We can truly look forward to seeing how our award-winning poetry slammers put these stories into text.  The day before, schoolchildren will be able to enjoy this musical programme, presented by Marko Simsa.

The Nordic Film Days Lübeck, which have been presenting outstanding filmmaking from the Scandinavian countries since 1959 and from the Baltic countries since 1990, have become a trademark of the Hanseatic city with a national appeal. For the 66th edition of the festival in November 2024, a sound image concert will accompany the program for the first time. The focus is on "Wood Works", a unique collection of Scandinavian folk melodies that the renowned "Danish String Quartet" has been playing and publishing in its own arrangements since 2013.

We’re puttin’ on the ritz with a night of musical fireworks, including Rimsky-Korsakov’s triumphant Procession of the Nobles and Grieg’s Piano Concerto, which is always an audience favorite, performed by former TSO Young Artist Competition winner, Chaeyoung Park. Casco Phil is present for an accessible concert packed with beloved classics. A few highlights have been selected from the heyday of symphonic music, which together form an anthology of the best that orchestral literature has to offer. From the enchanting Morgenstimmung by Grieg and Pavane by Fauré, to the Spanish fire of De Falla's Danza Ritual del Fuego, to the lurid Intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, Casco Phil traverses almost the entire emotional spectrum in a bird's eye view. In addition, we are looking forward to two solo works: the beautiful Romance No. 2 by Beethoven and the devilishly difficult Polonaise de Concert by Wieniawski. Rino Yoshimoto, a Japanese violinist from the ranks of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, invites her audience to an evening full of memorable melodies, intimate lyricism and symphonic splendor.

Each concert in the Premiere Prelude series zeroes in on one opera or ballet composer, offering the audience a different glance at the individuals behind the large-scale dramatic works shown on our stage. Using the more modest, or intimate, medium of chamber music Premiere Preludes speak directly to our feelings and hearts. Held at the Polish National Opera's Redutowe Rooms, these concerts attract both opera and classical music lovers, who sometimes find themselves surprised or even astonished by the new the perspective they are offered. Coming in contact with the subtle fabric of top-quality chamber music is an excellent introduction to the aura of the new productions that are the backbone of the Polish National Opera artistic season.

While hunting for the Firebird, Prince Ivan ends up in the garden of a magician, in whose magic tree he discovers the golden plumage. As a price for his freedom, the bird gives the prince a magic feather that will summon him when in danger. Igor Stravinsky tells how Ivan uses it and what the magician's dance of hell is all about in his ballet music "The Firebird".

The "Norwegian Dances" sound no less spirited, for which Edvard Grieg used the popular Sinklar March and three traditional bridal dances of young men. This is somewhat similar to the "Slavonic Dances" by Antonín Dvořák, whose 7th Symphony will open the concert.

Following a long and highly successful career as both a solo and a collaborative pianist, as well as a festival and concert series programmer, Kathryn Stott has decided to step down from public recitals from the end of this year – though many of her other creative activities will continue. Wigmore audiences will be delighted to partake in this special celebration of her exceptional artistry in her last London recital appearance.

This enchanting evening at the Bedford Corn Exchange on Wednesday, 9th October 2024, at 7:30 pm, promises to be a memorable journey through the landscapes of the Nordic countries, brought to life by the masterful compositions of these renowned composers.

Under the baton of conductor Vinay Parameswaran, with the virtuosic Juho Pohjonen at the piano, the concert will open with Nielsen's Helios Overture, a musical depiction of the sun's journey across the Aegean Sea. This will be followed by Grieg's Piano Concerto, a piece celebrated for its dramatic opening and anthemic finale. The highlight of the evening will be Sibelius's Symphony No. 5, a masterpiece that begins with a whisper and builds to the majestic "swan theme" finale, inspired by the sight of 16 swans in flight.

This concert is part of the "Nordic Soundscapes" series, offering a unique opportunity to explore music crafted from nature. Experience the electrifying start of the Nordic Soundscapes series with "Santtu conducts Sibelius and Grieg" at the Royal Festival Hall on Thursday, 26 September 2024, at 7pm. Under the baton of Finnish Principal Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, this concert promises an unforgettable evening of music that explores the deep connections between Nordic composers and the natural world.

The evening kicks off with María Sigfúsdóttir’s "Oceans" in its London premiere, a piece that captures the majestic power of the sea and the wind, setting the stage for a night of immersive soundscapes. Following this, the renowned pianist Stephen Hough takes the stage for Grieg’s beloved Piano Concerto, a work overflowing with passion and dramatic intensity.

The highlight of the night is Sibelius’s "Kullervo," a monumental piece that tells a tragic tale from Finland’s national epic, the Kalevala. Performed with the historic Ylioppilaskunnan Laulajat Male Voice Choir, who sang at its premiere in 1892, this rare performance is a testament to Finnish national identity and the genius of Sibelius. Expect an evening of sweeping melodies, high drama, and exceptional singing.

Showcasing the excellence of female brass players and musicians from marginalized groups, Seraph Brass celebrates its tenth anniversary in Miami. Winners of the American Prize in Chamber Music, the group has been praised for their “beautiful sounds" (American Record Guide), "fine playing” (Gramophone), and “staggeringly high caliber of performance” (Textura). 

Seraph Brass performs a diverse body of repertoire, ranging from original transcriptions to newly commissioned works and core classics. The program features works by women (Rene Orth, Reena Esmail, Catherine McMichael), American (Anthony DiLorenzo, Kevin Day, Jeff Scott, Kevin McKee), and European (Edvard Grieg, Giuseppe Verdi, Liszt, Franz Dinicu) composers.

In the second academy concert, old and new are combined, the familiar with the unknown and the fairytale-like, when the forward-moving, youthful freshness of the seventeen-year-old Mozart meets the rather unknown romantic sounds of the Hamburg-born Ferdinand David. The atmosphere continues with Ralph Vaughan Williams, whose music is a sonorous reflection of their origins and homeland, England. Just like Edvard Grieg's "Peer Gynt" from Norway. A fairytale ending to a concert between Hamburg, Vienna, England and Poland, between classical, romantic and modern.

Music transcends today's actual boundaries, echoes the natural, musical boundaries of yesteryear, and above all shows how much music is the connecting factor between different cultural regions. Casco Phil takes you on a journey that began hundreds of years ago and introduces you to folk music from Hungary, stirring Klezmer from Romania, festive French music at the Court of Louis XIV, and much more. You will hear beautiful music from all corners of Europe as we take you on a complete 'tour musicale', from Western Europe to Central Europe and Northern Europe, and then via Eastern Europe to Southern Europe. The program takes a journey through Europe, taking as its starting point the current members of the European Union. At the same time we also take a journey in time. Music from the 16th century is discussed (by the Mechelen Philippus De Monte), but also baroque music, music from classicism and romanticism, a significant portion of folk music arranged for orchestra, and of course also a touch of accessible modern music. In this way, cultural regions are musically highlighted through the different epochs that have molded Europe into what it is today.

The event kicks off at 1:00 pm with "Moving with Bach: Solo Works," featuring four solo performances scattered around the winery's expansive 23,000 sq. ft. wine cave. Each performance, scheduled at 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm, 3:00 pm, and 4:00 pm, will showcase the timeless compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach, providing a moving backdrop to your wine tasting journey.

At 6:30 pm, join Robert Rex, the winemaker, for "A Symphony of Flavors," a guided wine tasting and talk. Learn about Deerfield Ranch Winery's history, its unique cave, and the CleanWine making process that results in wines low in sulfites and histamines. This intimate experience includes tasting five of Deerfield's award-winning wines.

The highlight of the evening, "Cellos in the Cave," begins at 7:30 pm in the Grand Room of the wine cave. This concert features the virtuosic cellists of the Santa Rosa Symphony in a program specially arranged for cello ensemble. From the duets of Bach to the quintets of Grieg and the octets of Villa-Lobos, this performance promises a mesmerizing auditory experience in a venue like no other.

During this summer's festival, around 20 MCO musicians will take part in four orchestra concerts.
