Nathalie Stutzmann conducts Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, which he composed shortly after his meeting with Grieg, while Nikolai Lugansky is the soloist in Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor.

A Celebration of Spirit brings together masterworks that highlight the vitality and diversity of the human experience. Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 is based on a play by Ibsen that tells the story of a young man’s journeys in search of family redemption. Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1 features excerpts from his well-known opera Carmen, in which the protagonist is a gypsy woman who experiences challenges and misfortune but whose humanity shines through the story. Finally, Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite transports us into a world of wonder, tradition, and imagination, marking the seasonal shift with timeless melodies.

Three Scandinavian composers, three stops on an existential journey: Jean Sibelius opens with the "Scene with Cranes" from his incidental music to Järnefelt's "Kuolema" ("Death"). Here, the image of nature and the motif of death merge into a quiet vision of transition, in which the cranes appear as a peaceful escort between this world and the next. Wilhelm Stenhammar's concert overture "Excelsior!", in contrast, sparkles with vitality: a youthful manifesto, untamed and full of the spirit of optimism. Ibsen's "Peer Gynt," for which Edvard Grieg wrote his world-famous incidental music, extends the spectrum further—a life parable of self-realization and escape from responsibility, all the way to love and redemption.

Jeffrey Zhao and Aaron Jin, winners of the prestigious Eastside Piano Competition, help open Cascade Symphony’s 64th season with piano concerti by Felix Mendelssohn and Edvard Grieg. Aaron was a gold medalist in the 2024 Seattle International Virtuoso competition. Jeffrey, gold medalist at the Pacific International Piano Competition, previously performed Rachmaninov with Cascade Symphony in 2022. The concert also includes Anatoly Liadov’s tone poem, Baba Yaga, the lushly beautiful “In the Garden” movement from Karl Goldmark’s “Rustic Wedding” Symphony, and concludes with the rarely performed 2nd Symphony by Dmitri Kabalevsky.

Kicking off with Market Street, 1920s, a thrilling new work by Principal Trombone Timothy Higgins, Spanish conductor Gustavo Gimeno returns to lead the San Francisco Symphony in a real dopamine hit of a program. Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony invites us to feel good, or at least better. The main theme, a musical representation of fate, remains deliciously elusive, but the overall structure follows the same model—minor to major, dark to light, sorrow to celebration—that Beethoven famously established in his own Fifth Symphony. Influenced by Schumann and Norwegian folk music, Grieg’s Piano Concerto makes us feel at home, happy and contented, while coaxing us toward new sonic adventures. The complex but catchy finale is Grieg’s delightfully demonic take on the halling, a traditional rural folk dance, which he turns into an infectious Nordic hoedown.

All of the works on this concert pay homage to great predecessors. Heitor Villa-Lobos’s set of Bachianas Brasileiras is a tribute to Bach, transformed through the lens of his South American roots. The lush and evocative Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 has become famous for its beautiful, swoon-worthy melody and echoes the famous "Air" from Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3.

A champion of Norwegian music, Edvard Grieg composed only two string quartets, the second of which is unfinished. The String Quartet No. 1 in G minor was premiered in Cologne on October 29, 1878, by the Heckmann Quartet. After hearing it in Wiesbaden, Liszt decided to perform it immediately in Rome, which earned the work a rather unexpected reception. As for the short string quartet Crisantemi (" Chrysanthemums "), it was composed by Puccini in 1890, in memory of Amedeo of Savoy, former King of Spain, and includes two themes later taken up in the final scene of the opera Manon Lescaut . Two rare works performed here by four members of the OPRL: an hour of musical pleasure to brighten up your lunchtime!

Stars such as festival prize winners Julian Bliss and Sebastian Klinger, pianist Matthias Kirschnereit, and violinist Michael Barenboim are among those teaching at the Rostock University of Music and Theatre's summer campus. Istanbul-born pianist İlyun Bürkev is only 16 years old and already a real star in her home country. She is now studying at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and has won numerous prizes at international competitions, most recently at »Jeune Chopin« in Switzerland. Together with the most important youth orchestra from her home town, the Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, she will perform Edvard Grieg’s sonorous and captivating piano concerto at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. The orchestra has already performed with greats such as Murray Perahia and Alice Sara Ott and plays in major concert halls such as the Vienna and Berlin Konzerthaus – »technically absolutely convincing«, according to the Tagesspiegel.

This concert features members of the MDR Symphony Orchestra together with the Stiehle-Lucaciu duo, performing arrangements by Andres Reukauf and Peter Lawrence. The duo, Sascha Stiehler (piano/presentation) and Antonio Lucaciu (saxophone/vocals/presentation), represents a unique fusion of classical, pop, and jazz. The musicians tell the stories of everyday life, lying on the sidewalk, waiting to be discovered – more with their instruments than with their voices. As renowned musicians on the German music scene, the two Leipzig natives have already performed with music greats such as Clueso, Daniel Hope, Max Prosa, Günther "Baby" Sommer, Elif, and Sarah Lesch, and have appeared on numerous TV shows.

The two stars Daniel Müller-Schott and Vasily Petrenko have been working together for over ten years, and now it's time for the festival prize winner to bring the conductor and his Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to Ulrichshusen. The program includes a piece that the cellist considers one of the most beautiful and moving of all time: Dvořák's Cello Concerto. "Every note is full of love. This work is from heaven," says Müller-Schott.

The MDR Symphony Orchestra and organist Denny Wilke form a delightful sonic alliance in this program: Both perform works by Johann Sebastian Bach, including the famous Passacaglia in C minor and the equally famous Orchestral Suite in B minor. The program is complemented by Franz Schreker's atmospheric Intermezzo and Edvard Grieg's Suite, Op. 40, a stylistically charming return to the Baroque period, which the composer intended as a homage to the Danish-Norwegian poet Ludvig Holberg.

Ever since winning the 2021 Warsaw Chopin Competition, Bruce Liu has been one of the most sought-after pianists of our time. At the Kurhaus Wiesbaden, last year's Focus Artist, together with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Vasily Petrenko, presents a demanding program that impressively demonstrates the close connection between music and storytelling. Step onto the main stage and play along with members of The Philadelphia Orchestra for the 7th annual Philadelphia Orchestra PlayIN event at SPAC. Violin, viola, cello, and bass players of all ages are invited to play on the SPAC stage alongside members of The Philadelphia Orchestra.

The world beyond the Arctic Circle is a realm like no other – vast expanses, majestic mountains and crystal-clear fjords define its breathtaking beauty. The Norwegian violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing has captured these landscapes in music, performing alongside the Arctic Philharmonic, the world’s northernmost professional orchestra. Their programme combines Nordic classics from composers like Grieg and Rautavaara with specially commissioned pieces by film composers including Frode Fjellheim (title song to »Frozen«) and Jacob Shea (»Planet Earth II«).

Pianopalooza is our week-long piano festival that will welcome and celebrate the debut of the Rogue Valley Symphony’s latest addition: a coveted Hamburg Steinway piano called The Raven. This will be a rare opportunity to hear star pianists and violinists putting the piano to the test with classical double concertos for violin and piano by classical contemporaries Mozart, Haydn, and Hummel, as well as major Romantic piano concertos by Rachmaninoff, Grieg, and Chopin. All composers were ALSO star pianists.

Drama meets Romance: When the Norwegian national poet Henrik Ibsen and his compatriot, the Norwegian Edward Grieg, met in Rome in 1866, they immediately hit it off. It's no wonder that Ibsen later asked the composer to write the music for his play "Peer Gynt" - at that time, it was almost unthinkable to stage a major theater production without incidental music. But as good as the music was - it would have long been forgotten if Grieg had not compiled it into two suites for orchestra. Today, the work, with the flute melody from "Morning Mood" or the striking sounds of the bassoon in "In the Hall of the Mountain King," is considered quintessential romantic music. As a grand finale to the Dresden City Festival, the Dresden Philharmonic will present it open-air on Theaterplatz under the direction of Tabita Berglund - who could be more suitable for this than the newly appointed First Guest Conductor from Norway?

The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra makes a summer guest appearance at Stockholm City Hall this Sunday afternoon in August, marking the centenary of the City Hall organ in the Blue Hall – the largest pipe organ in Scandinavia. The instrument was inaugurated in 1925, two years after the building itself was completed.
