When Edvard Grieg set music to Henrik Ibsen's play, Peer Gynt , in 1875, he also set music to the folk soul of his own nation. The catchy movements about the blissful morning mood, Dovregubben , Solveig , Anitra and all the others are among Norway's most beloved tunes. Thomas Dausgaard has himself composed a suite of nine movements from the complete play's music.

Grieg’s beloved and unabashedly Romantic Piano Concerto, performed by Yeol Eum Son, dances and dazzles and reflects a time of personal happiness in the composer’s life. A combination of beguiling melodies and bravura fire, it found inspiration in the rhythmic patterns of Norwegian folk dances. Maestro Danzmayr also leads Stenhammar’s Second Symphony, a Romantic Swedish jewel not heard nearly often enough. Plus, Sibelius’ stirring The Swan of Tuonela joins this Nordic musical banquet, inspired by scenes from Finnish mythology.

Anyone who wins the junior section of the legendary International Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 13 is under special scrutiny. Even ten years later, Alexander Malofeev continues to fulfill the associated expectations with flying colors. Since then, the Russian, dubbed a "world revolution on the piano" by the Wiener Standard, has collected numerous other prizes and performed with the world's greatest orchestras. In 2022, he stood in for Yevgeny Kissin with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. "The audience went wild with enthusiasm," wrote the Frankfurter Rundschau. At the Elbphilharmonie, the still only 23-year-old now devotes himself to both the grand masters of Russian piano music and darkly shimmering works from Northern Europe.

Give Me Your Stars explores the profound and diverse beauty of music inspired by the heavens, human connection, and the places we call home. At its heart is Lucy Walker’s eponymous new work, written for VOCES8, which captures the delicate balance between celestial wonder and the deep, personal connections that make us human.

The programme spans centuries of choral music, from the luminous polyphony of Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Regina caeli to timeless jazz standards. Along the way, we encounter the reflective sentiments of Eric Whitacre’s All Seems Beautiful to Me and Ola Gjeilo’s Ubi caritas, folk traditions in Danny Boy and Michael McGlynn’s Dúlamán, and evocative tales of cities and starlight in April in Paris and New York, New York.

In 1926, Düsseldorf opened what was then the world's largest planetarium. Exactly 100 years later, we celebrate this with music that reaches as far into the heavens as it does into the depths of human emotion. The spectacular opening is Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1, which impressively demonstrates the unimaginable range of musical languages ​​that can span between nostalgic retrospection and passionate anticipation of the future. Edvard Grieg's popular Peer Gynt Suites then take you on an "elegiac expedition" where you witness a sunrise that, since its composition, has confidently been considered the most magnificent example since the birth of mankind. And because Peer Gynt never completely leaves his Norwegian homeland, original sounds from the north resound with Ragnhild Hemsing's Hardanger fiddle. Gordon Hamilton – Green Monday audience favorite – composed a rousing concerto for her, the premiere of which perfectly rounds off the concert.

The young Swedish-Norwegian violinist Johan Dalene has long demonstrated that virtuoso violin music is also at home in Northern Europe. As one of the world's most sought-after young artists, he champions the composers of his Scandinavian homeland. Three Scandinavian composers, three stops on an existential journey: Jean Sibelius opens with the "Scene with Cranes" from his incidental music to Järnefelt's "Kuolema" ("Death"). Here, the image of nature and the motif of death merge into a quiet vision of transition, in which the cranes appear as a peaceful escort between this world and the next. Wilhelm Stenhammar's concert overture "Excelsior!", in contrast, sparkles with vitality: a youthful manifesto, untamed and full of the spirit of optimism. Ibsen's "Peer Gynt," for which Edvard Grieg wrote his world-famous incidental music, extends the spectrum further—a life parable of self-realization and escape from responsibility, all the way to love and redemption.

Jeffrey Zhao and Aaron Jin, winners of the prestigious Eastside Piano Competition, help open Cascade Symphony’s 64th season with piano concerti by Felix Mendelssohn and Edvard Grieg. Aaron was a gold medalist in the 2024 Seattle International Virtuoso competition. Jeffrey, gold medalist at the Pacific International Piano Competition, previously performed Rachmaninov with Cascade Symphony in 2022. The concert also includes Anatoly Liadov’s tone poem, Baba Yaga, the lushly beautiful “In the Garden” movement from Karl Goldmark’s “Rustic Wedding” Symphony, and concludes with the rarely performed 2nd Symphony by Dmitri Kabalevsky.

‘Titanic’ was how one critic described the playing of pianist Boris Giltburg, and they didn’t stop there: ‘Giltburg had enormous reserves of firepower – and of musing poetry, too – to open up whole worlds of feeling and imagination.’ Now imagine him bringing all his wizardry to one of the best-loved showpieces of all time – Grieg’s evergreen (and gloriously tuneful) Piano Concerto. With an extra touch of magic from the RPO’s charismatic Conductor-in-Residence Kevin John Edusei, it’s the big heart of a concert that begins in California, with Gabriella Smith’s ingenious musical nature notebook and ends beneath the Northern Lights of Finland, as Sibelius’ mighty Second Symphony grows from tranquil beginnings to a soaring hymn of triumph. Kicking off with Market Street, 1920s, a thrilling new work by Principal Trombone Timothy Higgins, Spanish conductor Gustavo Gimeno returns to lead the San Francisco Symphony in a real dopamine hit of a program. Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony invites us to feel good, or at least better. The main theme, a musical representation of fate, remains deliciously elusive, but the overall structure follows the same model—minor to major, dark to light, sorrow to celebration—that Beethoven famously established in his own Fifth Symphony. Influenced by Schumann and Norwegian folk music, Grieg’s Piano Concerto makes us feel at home, happy and contented, while coaxing us toward new sonic adventures. The complex but catchy finale is Grieg’s delightfully demonic take on the halling, a traditional rural folk dance, which he turns into an infectious Nordic hoedown.

All of the works on this concert pay homage to great predecessors. Heitor Villa-Lobos’s set of Bachianas Brasileiras is a tribute to Bach, transformed through the lens of his South American roots. The lush and evocative Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 has become famous for its beautiful, swoon-worthy melody and echoes the famous "Air" from Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3.

A champion of Norwegian music, Edvard Grieg composed only two string quartets, the second of which is unfinished. The String Quartet No. 1 in G minor was premiered in Cologne on October 29, 1878, by the Heckmann Quartet. After hearing it in Wiesbaden, Liszt decided to perform it immediately in Rome, which earned the work a rather unexpected reception. As for the short string quartet Crisantemi (" Chrysanthemums "), it was composed by Puccini in 1890, in memory of Amedeo of Savoy, former King of Spain, and includes two themes later taken up in the final scene of the opera Manon Lescaut . Two rare works performed here by four members of the OPRL: an hour of musical pleasure to brighten up your lunchtime!

Under the motto "Planet Shostakovich," the Jena Philharmonic will embark on a musical orbit centered around the multifaceted works of Dmitri Shostakovich in the 2025-2026 season. In his eighth season as General Music Director, Simon Gaudenz invites audiences to rediscover a composer whose music oscillates between contemporary witness and timeless expressiveness. Shostakovich, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Delius, and Tomlinson—the season opening concert will showcase the broad stylistic range the orchestra will explore throughout the season. The new ARTIST IN RESIDENCE, light artist Robert Seidel, will also offer a foretaste of his art, which will enrich the music with new perceptions.
