The star of the evening: the tuba, which will make the Brucknerhaus shake at this concert! As a pioneer of his instrument, Andreas Martin Hofmeir proves that the tuba also works very well as a solo instrument in the classical concert hall. The brass instrument shows itself to be surprisingly versatile when Hofmeir plays Duda's tuba concerto and lets Vivaldi's famous Winter be heard not from the violin, but from the low brass.

Since 2010, chamber music ensembles of the Staatskapelle have been performing at the Bode Museum, a jewel of Berlin's museum landscape. The Baroque era opened the door for the violin to emerge as a defining voice in music. The "Grand Tour" was a traditional trip through Europe taken by young members of primarily British 18th-century gentry. Just as Rome had been the destination of pilgrims for centuries, it was the usual final stop of these rites of passage, typically those that marked when young persons of sufficient rank and means arrived at their "coming of age" in society. Accompanied by a tutor or older family member, the journey was meant to be as educational as it was enjoyable. While the primary value was found in experiencing firsthand the cultural legacy of classical antiquity and the Renaissance, it was also an opportunity to experience great art in contemporaneous cultures. While Paris and Rome were the most visited, stopovers throughout Europe were certainly a part of the travels, and for those interested in music, we imagine that Leipzig — the home of the great Johann Sebastian Bach — and Venice — a focal point of Italian music — were high on the list of hotspots.

“In the fury of most righteous wrath!” These are the words you’ll hear set by Vivaldi in this concert of Italian baroque fervor and passion from both the Venetian and Neapolitan styles. Vibrant soprano Maya Kherani returns to Philharmonia as a muse, singing two stories of abandonment and heartbreak through the zealous music of Handel and Marcello, accompanied by both furious and tender music for strings.

Avi Avital describes Antonio Vivaldi's mandolin concertos as "the Old Testament of my instrument ." The mandolinist recorded some of them, including the D major concerto RV 93, around ten years ago – and received excellent reviews for their work. This baroque masterpiece is then followed by a leap in time of almost 300 years: with a piece that Fazıl Say recently composed for Avi Avital. The commissioned work was created in close collaboration, with the Turkish pianist and composer having long been on the mandolinist's wish list because "his musical language includes the integration of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean music." "In this respect, we are both very similar as artists," says the Artist in Residence for the 2025/2026 season. The result is a work that is tailor-made for the artistic personality of the Israeli musician. "When I look at the music, I recognize a lot of myself in it," he says of the new mandolin concerto, with which he has once again expanded the repertoire for his instrument. With conductor Ariel Zuckermann, Avital's friend is not only conducting the Duisburg Philharmonic, but also his preferred candidate for the 2nd Philharmonic Concert. "I've known him for many years and have played with him often," says Avital. "He has exactly the right temperament for this kind of music."

There's something magical about the change that comes with the seasons. The idea of ​​a leaf growing from a bare branch in spring seems unimaginable, at least during the winter months. And yet: as soon as the first warm rays of sunshine make their way through, everything sprouts and blooms everywhere. Accompanied by Israeli mandolinist Jacob Reuven, students from grades 1 to 4 stroll through the seasons in this concert. Surrounded by music spanning more than 250 years, spring, summer, autumn, and winter seem both distant and close at hand. Sometimes the messenger of spring sits chirping on our shoulder, sometimes we dance the tango with him through the colorful sea of ​​leaves.

Under the direction of Omer Meir Wellber, the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra is adding a colorful accent to the season: THE BLUE WEEK. The new festival replaces the former Academy Concerts and combines unique works and programs on the one hand and showcases the special qualities of our orchestra musicians on the other. In the first edition, they make metamorphoses of all kinds audible: In the third concert program of the festival week, Vivaldi's and Piazzolla's spring, summer, autumn and winter come together in an interplay and form eight seasons of different climatic zones.
