Four guest concerts this season will take the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and chief conductor Alain Altinoglu to Spain in March, performing at the Auditori de Girona, the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, ​​the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia. On the program is Mahler's Ninth Symphony, the symphonic finale of the great late-Romantic composer, for whose work the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra has enjoyed a special affinity and expertise for decades.

When you hear Sir Simon Rattle speak about Gustav Mahler, it seems as if he knew the composer personally. But it probably feels the same if, like the chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, you have been engaged with the deeply personal and autobiographical music of the late Romantic composer for more than 50 years. Mahler once said that his symphonies contained an entire world – and no one can guide orchestra and audience through these intricate worlds better than Sir Simon Rattle.

After only three performances, Mahler removed the Blumine movement from his first symphony. It had received bad reviews and other nasty comments. Perhaps it didn't fit in with the rest of the composition. But now we can enjoy this incredibly beautiful piece with the trumpet solo all by itself.

The Frenchman's approach to Mahler is detailed, attentive to structure, crystallizing colors. And in the Ninth, the colors are not exactly the brightest, naturally, because: This is not about the failure in the pursuit of personal happiness, but about the failure of the world as a whole. It is not only Mahler the man who sees himself on the brink of the abyss, but rather humanity itself – the Ninth as a universal requiem. One of the famous sayings about this work was coined by Arnold Schoenberg: "It seems the Ninth is a boundary. Whoever wants to go beyond it must leave." For: "Those who have written a Ninth Symphony were too close to the afterlife."

The Philharnonia invites you into Gustav Mahler’s world – a world saturated with orchestral colour.  

Since it was founded in 1945, the Philharmonia has given many outstanding performances of Mahler’s epic, all-embracing symphonies. In the orchestra’s 80th anniversary season, ‘superb’ (Opera Now) conductor Kent Nagano takes to the podium for the great Resurrection Symphony, scored for a large orchestra, two solo singers and chorus.

At the climax of his tragic Sixth Symphony, he portrayed an artist felled by three mighty ‘hammer blows of fate’. South Korean violinist Clara-Jumi Kang performs Lalo’s passionate violin concerto Symphonie Espagnole. Ryan Bancroft also conducts the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in Anders Hillborg’s Beast Sampler, where the orchestra forms a strong, vivid organism. Finally we hear the epic symphony No 1 by Mahler, the Titan.

South Korean violinist Clara-Jumi Kang was a star already as a child, and has visited Sweden on several occasions. At this guest performance she presents the beautiful violin concerto Symphonie Espagnole. French Édouard Lalo composed the concerto around the same time that Bizet’s opera Carmen premiered in Paris, with the same passionate Spanish sound. Audiences received both with great enthusiasm. Later, Tchaikovsky found inspiration from Lalo to compose his own masterful violin concerto.

Prompted by the horror of the frequent terrorist attacks, Fazil Say's cello concerto "Never Give Up" was created as a "cry for freedom and peace." Franco-Belgian cellist Camille Thomas performed the solo part at the premiere in 2018. Rhythm and percussion, great drama and expressiveness, but also experimental sounds characterize this concerto. In the middle movement, one can sense allusions to machine gun fire and human screams. The finale, however, is full of hope for the future – with hints of birdsong, ocean waves, and peaceful Turkish dances.

The world and atmosphere of the "Wunderhorn" songs are just as present as the sonic surges characteristic of his symphonic style, culminating in a vision of the "Resurrection," initially mysterious and then brilliant, conveyed through both the words and the music.

The Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra is the oldest continuously operating orchestra in the state of Oregon. From its inception in 1906 as a collegiate orchestra composed of nine members, the symphony has grown into a full symphonic orchestra performing 3 major classical concerts, a holiday concert, and a children’s concert each season. Gustav Mahler’s »Kindertotenlieder« were written, as he said, »in one breath«. This is music of harrowing intimacy, in which the focus is not on pain but rather the depiction of suffering through images of quiet consolation. Composed between 1901 and 1904, the cycle explores a theme that, tragically, would affect Mahler only a few years later. In his Seventh Symphony, however, the composer strikes a very different tone: enigmatic, fragmented, often unearthly. Two so-called Nachtmusiken (Night Musics) frame a ghostly scherzo that oscillates between darkness and demonic mockery. But then comes the turning point: the Finale shocks with the glaring light of day, almost as if from another world – triumphant yet at the same time ambiguous.

Mahler’s Third Symphony explores the human condition, nature, and the divine. With six movements, it reflects Mahler’s philosophical quest to “embrace everything.” Mezzo-soprano Gabrielle Beteag and the Treble Voices of the SSU Symphonic Chorus, directed by Jenny Bent, return to Weill Hall to perform what is regarded as one of the greatest symphonies of all time.

Mahler’s sixth symphony is one of great contrast. Although written at an incredibly happy period of his life, the work itself is mostly dark. Mahler firmly believed in an artist’s ability to predict or even influence future events, and the Sixth, his most personal work, is also a prophetic one. The three blows of the epic hammer are said to represent the three great blows that came to Mahler after the premiere: the death of his child, the diagnosis of his heart condition, and his forced resignation from the Vienna Opera. “No other work flowed so directly from his heart as this one,” wrote his wife Alma. “We both cried at the time; we felt so deeply what this music meant, what it forebodingly told us.”

Founded by Iván Fischer in 1983, the Budapest Festival Orchestra (BFO) is rated among the top 10 orchestras in the world, regularly performing at the most important concert venues of the international music scene. The BFO has won two Gramophone Awards and was nominated for a Grammy in 2013 for its recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. The BFO also received the Association of Music Critics of Argentina’s award for Best Foreign Symphony Orchestra in 2016, the Diapason d’Or for its recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 in 2014, and the Italian Toblacher Komponierhäuschen prize.

Mahler's Fifth Symphony is especially remembered for its wonderful Adagietto for strings and harp, which has been heard in Visconti's film Death in Venice, at President Kennedy's funeral and at the commemorations of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. For Mahler, the piece was a declaration of love for his new wife Alma, but in the great symphony it is a small respite on the way from the mourning march and storms of the beginning to the optimistic rush of the finale.

Following the Duisburg Philharmonic's guest performance at the Cologne Philharmonic at the beginning of the season, the Cologne-based WDR Symphony Orchestra is now making a return visit to the Mercatorhalle Philharmonie. Romanian-born Cristian Măcelaru was Chief Conductor there from 2019 until the summer of 2025 – and will continue to be associated with the orchestra as Artistic Partner before Marie Jacquot becomes the new Chief Conductor in the cathedral city starting in the 2026/2027 season. Over the years they have worked together, Măcelaru and the WDR Symphony Orchestra have repeatedly explored the symphonies of Gustav Mahler. And they will also be performing Mahler during their guest performance in Duisburg. More specifically, his Symphony No. 5, whose famous "Adagietto" was a captivatingly beautiful declaration of love by the composer to his wife Alma, and which Luchino Visconti used as the atmospheric soundtrack for his Thomas Mann film adaptation "Death in Venice." Before that, there are two Tchaikovsky pieces and two orchestral pieces with solo cello: the night-dreamy "Nocturne," in which the cello is allowed to sing its wonderful utterance in an elegiac melody, and the "Rococo Variations," a musical homage by Tchaikovsky to his revered role model, Mozart. The young star cellist Kian Soltani makes his Duisburg debut as soloist.

One of the greatest orchestral composers of all time, Gustav Mahler wrote symphonies which – as a later composer famously remarked – “sum up the whole history of music”. Rafael Payare is a passionate, renowned champion of Mahler and determined this composer should be central to the repertoire and mission of our San Diego Symphony Orchestra. In this concert, he reaches the epic Seventh Symphony, a huge cathedral of sound in five movements, which move from an eerie opening inspired by a trip across an alpine lake at night, through three central movements filled with the ghosts of nocturnal dreams and experiences, to an ending like a colossal and heroic dawn in which all humanity seems to be celebrating.

Music Director Emeritus Thierry Fischer returns to the podium for a luminous program that embraces joy, unity, and wonder. At its heart is Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, capturing the innocence of childhood with delicate orchestration and lyrical warmth.
