Since 2018, they have performed all nine of the Viennese composer’s symphonies together. In just one week, the Stuttgart Liederhalle offers a unique overview of Mahler’s symphonic oeuvre: from the world-embracing First to the tragic Sixth and the pensive, introspective Ninth.

Esteemed interpreter of Gustav Mahler’s works, Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts The Met Orchestra in the composer’s Fourth Symphony. Though it’s the most compact of Mahler’s grand compositions, it contains numerous iconic moments—from its sleigh-bell opening, to a country fiddle solo performed by “Death,” to the fourth movement’s groundbreaking combination of solo voice and orchestra, showcasing mezzo-soprano extraordinaire Joyce DiDonato in this performance. DiDonato is also featured in Mahler’s five-song Rückert-Lieder. A selection by the late Saariaho, one of the great composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, completes the program.

For the first time, the Czech Philharmonic is opening the doors of its own subscription series to the London Symphony Orchestra symbolically on the 50th anniversary of the death of Benjamin Britten. His Sinfonia da Requiem will be heard alongside Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, a work that the conductor Antonio Pappano calls a celebration of the beauty of life.

After opening the season with Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 7, Chief Conductor Marcus Bosch concludes the Philharmonic Concert series with the composer's Symphony No. 9 – and it's time to say goodbye. Composed in Toblach and New York, this large-scale symphony is Mahler's last completed work. The then New York Chief Conductor looks back with nostalgia, bids farewell, and seems to capitulate with his visions. The result was an impressive and bold sonic edifice, with which he builds a world using every means at his disposal – ultimately crossing the threshold to modernity.

Mahler’s Seventh Symphony began with a journey on the water: “I got into the boat …. At the first stroke of the oars, the theme (rather, the rhythm and character) of the introduction came into my head.” This journey glides through the nocturnal world of a feverish imagination, with the composer’s genius always lighting the way. We pass through twilight realms of fairytales, of phantoms, of serenading guitar, before emerging to hear Mahler greeting the full light of a sunny day. It remains his most mysterious and rarely heard symphony. Drawn by its emotional complexity, Music Director Xian Zhang wanted her first Mahler symphony in Seattle to be his Seventh — our first performances of it in 20 years.

When Beethoven wrote his Fifth and final piano concerto in 1809, Vienna was besieged by Napoleon's troops. The sounds of war and economic uncertainty – his patron Archduke Rudolf had left the city – influenced the creation of the work. Beethoven composed a piano concerto with an exceptionally new form for the time, in which the soloist alternates between heroic and peaceful moments. Despite the difficult circumstances, the work does not reflect fatalism, but rather a solemn struggle for freedom and against oppression. Gustav Mahler's First Symphony also reflects intense personal experiences. His unhappy love for the singer Johanna Richter inspired him to create the "Songs of a Wayfarer," from which he incorporated motifs into the first and third movements of the symphony. In an emotional state of exception, Mahler completed the symphony in just six weeks. The premiere in Budapest in 1889 was met with incomprehension, prompting Mahler to revise the work multiple times. Today, it is among his most frequently performed symphonies.

You will hear Mahler’s masterpiece in changing surround-sound, finding yourself at the very heart of the music as its vast sonic world unfolds. From the hazy glow of the opening to the ferocious outcry of a storm, every moment is both felt and heard with exhilarating immediacy.

We begin our final concert of the season with one of Mozart’s best-known and most beloved works: Eine kleine Nachtmusik (or A Little Night Music) and like most of Mozart’s works, it sounds so simple and completely belies the composer’s sophistication. We actually don’t know for sure why Mozart composed this piece. He rarely composed without a specific purpose or commission. And there’s no mention of this work in his letters or those of his contemporaries. All we know is that he finished it when he was 31 years old in Vienna—the same year he wrote his opera Don Giovanni. Maybe it was one of several works written for a friend of his, Gottfried von Jacquin, in Vienna. Jacquin’s sister, Franziska, was a pupil of Mozart, and together, they met as a group at Jacquin’s home for what they called “discussions, games, and merrymaking.” Mozart actually wrote several works for the Jacquin household, and A Little Night Music may well have been one of them. And maybe it’s an example of party music—who knows? In any case, it is great music, lots of fun to play and to listen to.

This show brings together three unique voices: Gustav Mahler, with The Song of the Earth , a great symphonic fresco inhabited by the beauty of the world and the quest for eternity; Marcelle Delpastre, an Occitan peasant poet, who writes of a living, organic, mystical earth; and André Minvielle, a singer, sound poet and improviser whose presence connects orality and improvisation to the sources of writing. These three artists combine the infinitely small – the earth as matter, language, everyday life, terrestrial life – and the infinitely large – the cosmos, memory, eternity, the life of the soul.

On stage, the voices of André Minvielle, Romie Estèves, and Juliette Minvielle—a blend of lyrical singing, scat, poetry, and improvisation—join twelve instrumentalists to create a vibrant fresco, somewhere between symphonic work and popular energy. Odense Symphony Orchestrakicks off its complete performance of all of Mahler's symphonies in style, when we are the very first to play the longest of them all, namely the monumental 3rd symphony, which runs for up to 1 hour and 45 minutes and requires an orchestra almost twice the size. But then it is fortunate that we have joined forces with our friends inCopenhagen Phil– on this symphonic journey into Mahler's score of overwhelming dimensions: in addition to an enormous ensemble with, for example, 8 horns, a boys' choir, a women's choir and a mezzo-soprano are also required. Here, Mahler's own words that the symphony IS the world really make sense – the musical expression could not be more all-encompassing; but Mahler also moves down into the smallest chamber musical expression and thus comes all the way around this amazing symphony – a word that actually becomes too poor here to describe what we are about to experience.

Schoenberg was one of the most revolutionary & challenging composers, but his early works are among the most lyrical & romantic pieces ever written. Mahler’s heart-rending Adagietto needs little introduction and is regularly in the Top 40 of Classic FM’s annual Hall of Fame, while Schoenberg’s impassioned Transfigured Night is a musical realisation of a Richard Dehmel poem, in which a young woman confesses to her betrothed that she bears another man’s child, conceived before they met. His acceptance of her, and resolve to raise the baby as theirs, is one of the most touching moments in classical music.

And so Rudi Stephan's Music for Seven String Instruments is all the more precious: dramatic, tragic, like an expressionist silent film, seeking the grand gesture. The Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra is the oldest continuously operating orchestra in the state of Oregon. The nickname “Symphony of a Thousand” scarcely does justice to Mahler’s epic work — one of the greatest in the concert repertoire. Its immense scope makes performances rare and, therefore, are to be treasured. Part One of Mahler’s mystical work begins with a powerful unleashing of sound that sets the hymn, “Come, Creative Spirit,” a text that also foreshadows the message of Part Two of the Symphony. The expansive second half transports us to the final scene of Goethe’s dramatic poem Faust, the title character who had bargained away his soul to the devil and thus to eternal damnation. But the beatific voices of a “chorus mysticus,” underscored by thunderous timpani rolls, reach into the stratosphere and promise that Faust’s soul — borne higher and ever higher to heaven through the intercession of hosts of penitent women and holy men and ultimately angels, will be redeemed through “the eternally feminine” — the power of love.

At 97, San Francisco Symphony Conductor Laureate Herbert Blomstedt maintains a rigorous concert schedule that belies his age. He conducts Mahler’s massive Ninth Symphony, a 90-minute marathon of emotional catharsis and technical derring-do. It was the last symphony that Mahler completed, and death was on his mind. At its core, and in spite of its tragic touches, the Ninth Symphony offers solace, the salvation of sunshine, a passing cloud, a child’s laughter.

Mahler’s Fifth Symphony is a sonic banquet, five spectacularly different movements that come together in an overwhelmingly brilliant whole. When rehearsing for the premiere, Mahler called the work “primeval, this foaming, roaring, raging sea of sound.” The program opens with a new work by acclaimed Philadelphia-based composer Tyshawn Sorey, written for Aaron Diehl, a pianist of “melodic precision, harmonic erudition and elegant restraint” (The New York Times).

It is bold, well-conceived, and full of dramatic power: Mozart's G minor Symphony, a stroke of genius. Composed at just 17 years old, it is anything but a mere youthful work. It is unique – and unfathomable. "We won't get close to Mozart," the writer and Mozart expert Wolfgang Hildesheimer already suspected. Gustav Mahler is another mystery. His Fourth Symphony is a sonic vision of paradise. Mahler himself spoke of "experience and suffering, truth and poetry in tones." Critics tore the work to pieces, but Mahler remained steadfast, always searching for the great symphonic redemption. Two extraordinary musicians make Mahler's vision of "heavenly life" a reality: Erika Baikoff, one of the most successful young voices of her generation, and Tabita Berglund, a conductor with a clear style and a great sense of musical depth. This will be visionary!

"In memory of..." – that could also be the title of the final symphony concert of the season. Although it is sometimes questionable who or what follows the "in". Maurice Ravel is said to have been thinking of a Spanish princess when choosing the title of his Pavane for the deceased Infanta. Or was he simply concerned with the similarity of "infante" and "défunte"? We will probably never know.

When we think of blank spots on the map, we at best mean places where there's no cell phone reception. And yet, our world still poses many puzzles: There's only one Earth in the solar system, but is it also the only one in the entire universe? But before we reach for the stars, perhaps we should first tidy up our planet and see how many carefully wrapped folders of wonderful music are still hidden in New York basements and attics.
