New Jersey Symphony: Xian Conducts Carmina Burana

The American Composers Orchestra premieres music by hundreds of today’s top composers, and no two concerts are alike. In this program, they offer a wide-ranging musical testament to humanity’s bold endeavors. Works include a multimedia rendering of a famed (and ultimately doomed) expedition to the North Pole, written by Nina C. Young; a world premiere by composer and jazz pianist Guillermo Klein; a world premiere by George Lewis, one of the leading exponents of experimental music today; an Augusta Read Thomas composition originally written to precede Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony; and a world premiere by Jack Hughes.

Two ballets written for the Martha Graham Dance Company feature prominently on this evening showcasing American creativity and originality. Augusta Read Thomas’s The Auditions is in seven sections, and depicts three dance auditions and the environment surrounding them. According to the composer and choreographer, the ballet "takes place in two worlds – one ethereal, one grounded.” The otherworldly, odd-numbered sections, all titled “The Landscape” contrast with the action-packed even-numbered sections, all titled “The Room.” 

American Evening Featuring Appalachian Spring

Hear Copland's original 13-instrument version of Appalachian Spring and an AMFS co-comissioned work in this concert highlighting American composers. 

Violinist Benjamin Baker won first prize at the 2016 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and third prize at the Michael Hill Competition in New Zealand in 2017. He demonstrates "virtuosity, refinement, and youthful exuberance" (New York Times) in his music and has performed as a soloist with London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the National Children's Orchestra in Manchester, and more.
