Local favorites Steve and Allison Martin join HSO for festive selections from The Nutcracker, Leroy Anderson’s classic Sleigh Ride, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and some of the Martins’ favorite songs, including “The Prayer,” “O Holy Night,” and “Ave Maria.”  Rounding out the family-friendly concert will be the audience favorite “Christmas Singalong,” full of well-known holiday carols! Steve and Allison are well known in West Michigan, having sung on opera stages and musical productions locally and around the country.  Allison received her Masters of Music from Michigan State University.  Steve holds a doctorate and master’s in music from Michigan State University.  He has taught at the college level and is now Director of Music and Fine Arts at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas.

It’s Christmas Eve in Edwardian London. Clara and her mother are shopping at Drosselmeyer’s Sweets & Delights Emporium where she meets an enchanted Nutcracker doll. They take home liquorice all-sorts, nougat, marzipan and of course, sugarplums, to delight their party guests. As music and laughter fill the house, Clara has a magical sugar plum vision, sparking an adventure in which she bravely defends her home from the Rat King before discovering a dazzling ice realm and its Queen.

A long tradition of Christmas concerts connects the Regensburg Cathedral Choir and the Munich Radio Orchestra. And when the renowned lieder singer Benjamin Appl joins the choir, the former Cathedral Choir member meets "his" choir – the perfect setting for an atmospheric Wednesday evening with Christmas classics such as Peter Cornelius's "The Kings," the most beautiful excerpts from Bach's Christmas Oratorio, and many other heartfelt songs, choral pieces, and well-known melodies.

Tchaikovsky’s Heroines & Heroes is the perfect chance to discover this enchanting fairy tale opera alongside the romantic, historical epic The Maid of Orleans and the composer’s masterpiece Eugene Onegin, based on Pushkin’s beloved novel. All three operas centre around complex and richly drawn heroines on journeys of discovery: saving their country, discovering the world, or learning – all too painfully – that first love and first heartbreak often go hand in hand.

The harp is often associated with heavenly sounds, which is naturally a wonderful fit for Christmas. However, the concert with world-renowned musician Xavier de Maistre demonstrates that the instrument offers a far greater wealth of expressive possibilities. De Maistre has long since made a name for himself as a musician who expands the boundaries and repertoire of his instrument with virtuosity and a willingness to experiment. When in doubt, he pragmatically takes to pen and paper and arranges existing works for the harp. In his current Advent program, however, this was almost unnecessary: ​​in concerts by Handel and Boieldieu, the charismatic Frenchman showcases the immense – and unexpected – sound spectrum of his instrument: from delicately shimmering melodies to rich chords and thundering basses. The Festival Strings Lucerne is contributing a true Romantic classic with Tchaikovsky's String Serenade.

When the Vision String Quartet takes the stage for the first time as the new artist-in-residence ensemble, one thing is certain: nothing ordinary will happen here today. First, under Alpesh Chauhan, the concert will take you straight to the North Star – Thomas Adés' "Polaris" is a musical star journey that draws your gaze mesmerizingly towards the night sky. Then, John Adams ignites a musical firework display and erects a breathtakingly virtuosic monument to Beethoven in "Absolute Jest." The Vision String Quartet impressively demonstrates that string instruments can be used to both joke brilliantly and philosophize profoundly. For the grand finale, you will delve deep into Tchaikovsky's most emotionally complex work, the "Manfred Symphony." The Hamburg State Orchestra's Philharmonic Concerts become TimePlays, transcending the boundaries of the ordinary. This concert features Aziza Sadikova's compositional exploration of Tchaikovsky's character – the second and third movements of his symphony are replaced by new compositions by her, inspired by the original. What an opening! The Berlin Symphony Orchestra kicks off the new season and its first symphony concert with the overture to Richard Wagner's opera "The Mastersingers of Nuremberg." While the Polonaise and Waltz from the opera "Eugene Onegin" are among the pieces frequently performed at prestigious balls, the opera itself tells a story of missed opportunities and unrequited love – and thus shares its innermost theme with the Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36, which was composed around the same time: the wrestling with fate.

The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester is one of the finest orchestras in the world for young musicians, offering a gateway to remarkable careers. A prime example is violinist Renaud Capuçon, who was selected by the orchestra’s founder Claudio Abbado in 1997 and soon rose to prominence as a chamber musician and soloist. For the »Elbphilharmonie Summer« festival, he now reunites with the orchestra and conductor Manfred Honeck, another alumnus who started as Abbado’s assistant and has now been at the helm of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for many years.

For many years, Sol Gabetta has been one of the most deeply moving and inspiring artists in the large Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival family. She performed at the SHMF for the first time in 2008 and was the acclaimed portrait artist in 2014 – the charismatic cellist has given a total of 35 concerts in a wide variety of formations in Schleswig-Holstein to date. Sol Gabetta will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the festival together with the Phiharmonia Orchestra from London under the direction of the young Finn Santtu-Matias Rouvali, who as chief conductor of the legendary orchestra is the successor to stars such as Riccardo Muti and Giuseppe Sinopoli.

Toledo Symphony Principal trombonist Garth Simmons makes a return solo appearance in Carlos Simon’s riveting concerto Troubled Water, inspired by stories told by enslaved African Americans and abolitionists about the Underground Railroad. The Montgomery Variations, by Margaret Bonds, is similarly inspired by episodes of our country’s history, in this case, the Civil Rights movement, with the city of Montgomery, AL as a focal point. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 is a towering symphonic structure that explores themes of fate and destiny through lush orchestration and heart-rending melodies.

Alumna Nicky Sohn’s The Blue Hour reflects on our planet’s precarious state and encourages contemplation and action. Gershwin’s An American in Paris bursts with jazzy charm and vibrant city rhythms—music so infectious it practically dances off the stage. On the other end of the musical spectrum, Tchaikovsky’s final symphony explores a wide-ranging emotional landscape and provides personal reflections on the composer’s storied life.

Join us for an exquisite afternoon of music as Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian, hailed for her electrifying performances and velvet-wrapped steel voice, graces the stage at Hertz Hall. Accompanied by the talented pianist Lukas Geniušas, Grigorian will make a rare U.S. appearance, presenting an all-Russian-language debut recital for Cal Performances. This special event is set to take place on December 15, 2024, from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm.

The program promises an intimate exploration of the Russian romantic repertoire, featuring rarely heard songs described by Grigorian as "small pieces of opera in a few minutes." Audiences can look forward to an emotional journey through the works of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, including beloved pieces such as "None but the Lonely Heart" by Tchaikovsky and "Spring Waters" by Rachmaninoff, among others. Each selection showcases the depth of Russian romanticism, from the poignant melodies to the rich, expressive harmonies.

Tickets for this captivating recital start at $78, with season subscriptions available from April 23 and single tickets going on sale on August 6. Colburn’s Tap, Modern Dance, Ballet, and Dance Academy students will dazzle in their December performance featuring new choreography and beloved masterworks. This year’s program includes choreography by Balanchine, Benjamin Millepied, Bella Lewitzky, and Colburn faculty members, with compositions by Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Hampton Hawes, and more. The performance also includes live percussion played by Colburn accompanist and Grammy winner TJ Troy.

Experience the enchanting melodies of the New Jersey Symphony at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. This free outdoor concert offers a delightful evening under the stars, featuring a diverse program that includes timeless classics, Broadway themes, and patriotic favorites. The performance celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Garden State with pieces like John Williams’ Liberty Fanfare and John Philip Sousa’s Atlantic City Pageant March. 

The symphony will perform a variety of beloved compositions, including the stirring Star Spangled Banner by John Stafford Smith and Damrosch, the elegant Polonaise from Eugene Onegin by Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and the dramatic Overture to Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi. Audiences will also be treated to the beautiful Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana by Peter Mascagni and selections from Georges Bizet’s Carmen.

Adding to the evening’s charm, the program includes Valerie Coleman’s Seven O’Clock Shout, Aaron Copland’s Saturday Night Waltz and Hoe Down from Rodeo, and selections from George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess arranged by Bennett. The concert will also feature a tribute to Frank Sinatra with Salute to Ol’ Blue Eyes, an Armed Forces Salute arranged by Lowden, and the rousing Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline, this concert promises a memorable musical experience. The event is supported by Mayor Steven M. Fulop, the Jersey City Municipal Council, and the Office of Cultural Affairs, with funding from the Arts and Culture Trust Fund and the Jersey City Economic Development Corporation.

Under the baton of conductor Joshua Gersen, this free outdoor concert offers a delightful medley of timeless classics, Broadway themes, and patriotic favorites. The program celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Garden State with pieces like John Williams’ Liberty Fanfare and John Philip Sousa’s Atlantic City Pageant March. 

Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Navesink River, the concert features a diverse repertoire, including John Stafford Smith and Damrosch’s The Star-Spangled Banner, Tchaikovsky’s Polonaise from Eugene Onegin, Verdi’s Overture to Nabucco, and Mascagni’s Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana. Audiences will also enjoy selections from Bizet’s Carmen, Copland’s Saturday Night Waltz and Hoe Down from Rodeo, and Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, arranged by Bennett. 

The evening continues with a tribute to Frank Sinatra in Salute to Ol’ Blue Eyes, arranged by Moss, and a patriotic Armed Forces Salute, arranged by Lowden. The concert concludes with Sousa’s iconic Stars and Stripes Forever, ensuring a memorable night of music under the stars. This event is presented by Red Bank RiverCenter, with a rain location at the Count Basie Center for the Arts. Programs and artists are subject to change.

Under the baton of conductor Joshua Gersen, this free program offers a delightful medley of timeless classics, Broadway themes, and patriotic favorites. The evening's repertoire includes John Williams' Liberty Fanfare, John Philip Sousa's Atlantic City Pageant March, and other celebrated pieces that pay homage to the Garden State. 

The concert opens with the stirring notes of The Star-Spangled Banner, followed by the elegant Polonaise from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin and the dramatic Overture to Verdi's Nabucco. Audiences will be captivated by the serene Intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and the vibrant selections from Bizet's Carmen. The program also features Valerie Coleman's Seven O’Clock Shout, Copland's Saturday Night Waltz and Hoe Down from Rodeo, and Gershwin's selections from Porgy and Bess, arranged by Bennett. 

In addition, the Symphony will perform a tribute to Frank Sinatra with Salute to Ol’ Blue Eyes, arranged by Moss, and honor the armed forces with Armed Forces Salute, arranged by Lowden. The concert concludes with Sousa's iconic Stars and Stripes Forever, followed by a spectacular fireworks display. This event is presented in collaboration with the Prudential presents North2Shore Festival and is sponsored by the County of Essex with additional support from Citizens Bank.
