What does America sound like? Perhaps like Rhapsody in Blue, George Gershwin’s early stroke of genius. Just listen to the opening clarinet solo with its long, swooping glissando and you immediately picture the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan, Broadway, or a smoky New York jazz club. Born in 2001, Alexander Malofeev – Russian by birth and now based in Berlin — will perform this “greatest hit” with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra.

Tchaikovsky never did anything by halves, and he poured all his heartache, his sorrow and his matchless gift for melody into a final symphony like no other. Don’t be misled by the name: ‘Pathétique’ means ‘full of feelings’ and when Krzysztof Urbański conducts the Warsaw Philharmonic, that’s exactly what they’ll bring – as well as glowing colours and some of the greatest tunes even Tchaikovsky ever composed.

These superb Polish musicians are always a big hit at Cadogan Hall; tonight they share a lost masterpiece by the postwar Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz and join pianist Alexandra Dariescu in the teenage Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto – true romance, played with love. Hear it, and feel your heart melt.

Tchaikovsky cannot be accused of excessive self-confidence. He is said to have been a shy contemporary, constantly plagued by self-doubt, melancholy and at times extremely shy of people. He could only be cheerful and full of life, creative, free, open and confident when he felt accepted and at home. This was the case at his country estate at Frolovskoye, where he remembered Florence in the summer of 1890. He had spent two spring months in Tuscany working on his opera The Queen of Spades. His String Sextet in D minor op. 70, inscribed 'Souvenir de Florence', is the productive result of a carefree time. But why is it so agitated and dramatic? In this concert of the 2 x hören series, the Simply Quartet and two members of the Kronberg Academy, together with artistic director Markus Fein, will focus on this magnificent work.

Jean Sibelius called one of his many symphonic poems "The Bard." We're never told what the piece is about. Only that it centers on a wandering poet and singer, like those found in many legends, including Norse mythology. And this bard, of course, is given his own instrument: the harp, which plays an important role in Sibelius's score. Sibelius was probably simply interested in a timeless portrait of the artist—after all, aren't he and his performers essentially all "bards"?

“To be or not to be?” This timeless question, which tormented Hamlet, continues to captivate minds. Ophelia, too, sought an answer, though hers ended tragically, culminating in one of literature’s most haunting scenes of madness. Shakespeare’s play—and Ophelia’s florid drowning—have inspired countless works of art, but it is the ambiguity of her mental state, coupled with her astonishing transition from speech to song, that has particularly intrigued composers.

It opens with the sound of funereal footsteps on the clarinet. A singing horn melody gives the second movement a more hopeful mood, but the fateful ‘footsteps’ theme returns in the third movement waltz, and triumphs in the stormy finale.

A first prize at the ARD Music Competition has launched many a career – including that of Quatuor Arod, which, after winning in 2016, took off internationally and debuted as a "Rising Star" at the Elbphilharmonie in 2019. Bayerischer Rundfunk writes: "This string quartet plays at a technically outstanding level – in a league with the very best." Could a penchant for Bach chorales contribute to this? The four French musicians have already released 36 videos featuring the short baroque pieces, sometimes as an encore and sometimes as a ritual at the start of rehearsals.

Since her Salzburg Salome, she has enjoyed cult status among the divas of our time: Whatever Asmik Grigorian touches becomes a sensation. The New York Met, the Wiener Staatsoper, Milan's La Scala, and Covent Garden are all scrambling to engage her. In her roles, she resembles a modern woman of today – direct, independent, and approachable. The romances by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff combine the intimacy of the salon with the expressiveness of an opera aria. Grigorian's approach gives them a new, contemporary perspective.

She is passionate about the works of her Scandinavian homeland: Norwegian conductor Tabita Berglund. At 36 years old, she has already conducted many of the world's most important orchestras – but the trained cellist has never before performed with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. The newly appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic literally extends a warm welcome ("Velkomne med æra") to Hamburg with one of her Norwegian compatriots who is relatively unknown here: Like Edvard Grieg in his time, the composer Geirr Tveitt, who died in 1981, was also interested in the folk songs surrounding his home on the Hardangerfjord and arranged them atmospherically for orchestra in his "One Hundred Folk Songs from Hardanger," Op. 151.

Just like his incredibly colorful piano playing, which has catapulted him into the top league of the classical music world. Bruce Liu was born in Paris and grew up in Canada, but his Asian roots have shaped him not least of all. "I notice that Chinese history – Confucianism, Taoism – is in my blood. But through my profession, I am also closely connected to European culture." His touch definitely has a French vein, elegant and incredibly light, while a haunting tension simmers beneath the surface. Excellent prerequisites for Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto, which covers all emotional ranges, from sensitive tenderness to barely controllable outbursts of energy.

»Schumann’s music opens up a whole world of new musical forms for us, touching strings that his great predecessors have not yet touched.« This is how none other than Piotr Tchaikovsky enthused about his German colleague. In fact, Schumann – alongside Mozart and Mendelssohn – was a great role model for the creator of ‘Pathétique’, »Swan Lake« and co. In the music of the older Romantic composer, Tchaikovsky found »the echo of mysterious processes of our soul life that move the heart of today’s man.« So there are plenty of reasons to juxtapose selected works by the two »brothers in spirit«. In the Elbphilharmonie, the NDR Vokalensemble under Kaspars Putniņš, currently chief conductor of the Swedish and Latvian Radio Choirs, and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under star conductor Paavo Järvi will explore this affinity.

What do the home countries of all the guest artists and composers participating in this concert have in common? Denmark, Russia, Sweden, and Estonia border the Baltic Sea! And the creative potential of this cultural region is nothing short of legendary. Two of the most popular protagonists from there are now meeting with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra: the Estonian star conductor Paavo Järvi and the exceptional Swedish clarinettist Martin Fröst, who has been invited as NDR Artist in Residence for 2025/2026.

Cellist Andreas Brantelid is one of the best musicians of his generation. At just 14 years old, he made his debut with the Royal Danish Orchestra, playing Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto – the same iconic work that cello legend Jacqueline Du Pré also made his debut with.


When he turned 30, he described his passion for music to DR with the words: “There's something about it that you can't help but do. I can't really give you an answer as to why I have the lifestyle I have, which is to travel a lot and play concerts all the time. It can't be any other way. It would simply hurt too much in the heart to say no to playing.”

What a concert evening! It begins with Beethoven's magnificent Prometheus Overture, dedicated to the Titan who brought fire to mankind and thus laid the foundation for our civilization. It concludes with Tchaikovsky's overwhelming "Pathétique" – whose mysterious aura is further enhanced by the fact that the composer died under mysterious circumstances just a few days after the premiere. In between, the most brilliant of all brilliants: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose dramatic Piano Concerto in D minor is illuminated in all its facets by young star Alexander Malofeev. Joining him on the podium is the London Philharmonic Orchestra, with the fantastic Karina Canellakis conducting.

"You can't call her talent, she's simply a genius." It was Herbert von Karajan who once knighted Anne-Sophie Mutter with these words. That was almost 50 years ago – and he was right: To this day, her name is synonymous with world-class violin performance. "If you want to get to know me, you have to see me on stage," the musician says of herself. Separating her life from music? Impossible. Her credo: Classical music belongs in everyday life, at the heart of society. She would have been on good terms with Pyotr Tchaikovsky on this point. Music was a refuge and an elixir for him. His magnificent violin concerto was written during difficult times and saved his life: "In such a state of mind, creation completely loses the character of work; it is pure bliss!"

Undoubtedly one of the finest cellists performing today, Johannes Moser returns to the MSO stage to play composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s Before we fall, fresh off its world premiere with the San Francisco Symphony. "Before we fall centres around the notion of teetering on the edge," says the composer; Moser’s cello "generates the atmospheric progression of the world it inhabits." Alpesh Chauhan, “a charismatic, balletic conductor” (The Guardian), leads this energetic new work, as well as a romantic suite from Tchaikovsky’s iconic Sleeping Beauty.

Destiny’s shadow hangs powerfully over Tchaikovsky’s last symphony: nine days after he conducted its premiere in St Petersburg, the composer was dead. He was 53 years old.

His doctors blamed his mysterious death on cholera, contracted from drinking unboiled water. But whether he drank that glass deliberately remains the subject of intense debate.

Odyssey explores Tchaikovsky’s psychology through the last two big orchestral works he completed. One, a light-hearted piece of brilliant balletic fantasy, the other this melancholic symphony, which he described as being “saturated with myself” and the best thing he would ever write.
