Mikhail Grazhdanov was born in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. He began his music studies on bayan (button accordion), shifting to piano at age 17. From 2013 - 2018 he was a student of Vladimir Tropp (piano), Olga Fillippova (harpsichord), and Alexey Lubimov (fortepiano) at the Moscow Conservatory. With the aid of a Fulbright scholarship, he earned a Master’s degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 2021, studying with Daniel Shapiro (piano). Currently he is a DMA candidate in historical performance practice at Case Western Reserve University, where he studies with Francesca Brittan (fortepiano), Peter Bennett (harpsichord) and Jonathan Moyer (organ). He has participated in a wide variety of masterclasses, including with Francesco Corti, Mark Edwards, and David Breitman. Recent professional appearances include performances with the American Bach Soloists Academy and a concert at the Boston Early Music Festival (summer 2023). He also appeared on the Young Artists Program at the Early Music America summit in Boston (Fall 2023).

Graduate Lecture-Recital: Caitlin Hedge, Baroque Violin and Soprano

In the second half of the 18th century, the newest musical genres were invented, showcased, and debated in domestic gatherings called salons. In an attempt to recreate the intimate and experimental atmosphere of a musical salon, this presentation will confront the divide between performer and audience, professional and amateur, and home and concert space. Featuring a range of North German historical performance practices including self-accompanied Lieder, improvisation, the free fantasia, and accompanied recitation, this program will draw from 18th-century primary sources to demonstrate ways of enlivening this repertoire.

Graduate Lecture-Recital: Andréa Walker, soprano, "An Evening at the 18th-Century Salon: Music, Poetry, and Declamation in the age of C.P.E. Bach"

The viola da gamba has long been considered an instrument that “went extinct” and had to be resurrected by the early music revival in the 20th century, but that narrative has been neatly disrupted by the last decade of scholarship. Peter Holman has documented a continuous thread of interest in the viol that connects the great viol traditions of the early 18th century through the 19th century into our own time, and Michael O’Loghlin has brought our attention to an often- overlooked hotbed of viol playing at the court of Frederick the Great. Tonight's presentation will take O’Loghlin’s work as a starting point, examining the favorable conditions the viol experienced in Berlin and expanding the view to include the court of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. In these locations, players and composers were bringing the viol out of the “high baroque” and into the Classical era, incorporating the viol into music that was stylistically up to date with that of more well known late-18th century composers like Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach, Franz Joseph Haydn, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This lecture recital will provide an introduction to the position of the viol in the late-18th century, with a focus on the music and issues of performance practice as they relate to the use of the instrument in this repertoire.
