For some years now, this house band has performed at the most recent summer and winter editions of Umbria Jazz as a resident band and the heart of the night-time jam sessions. The rhythm section now includes Luca Mannutza on piano, Jason Weaver on double bass, and Willie Jones III on drums.

For some years now, this house band has performed at the most recent summer and winter editions of Umbria Jazz as a resident band and the heart of the night-time jam sessions. The rhythm section now includes Luca Mannutza on piano, Jason Weaver on double bass, and Willie Jones III on drums.

They are experienced jazzmen, among the top players of their instruments. This band can recreate live the fervent atmosphere beloved by night owls.

Pianist Mike LeDonne, practically raised in his family’s music store, started playing piano at five. He is now an internationally renowned pianist and organist who has played with some of the world’s foremost jazz masters: from Benny Goodman to Milt Jackson and Sonny Rollins. He has won praise not only from critics but from master musicians: Oscar Peterson called him “incredible” and “one of the most talented pianists of this particular era.”

This concert will feature Willie Jones III, one of the world's leading jazz drummers along with a quintet including tenor saxophonist Brian Levy (director Jazz Studies at SDSU), trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos (10x winner of the San Diego Music Awards: "Best Jazz Artist"), pianist Sam Hirsh, and bassist Mack Leighton (bass faculty at SDSU). The quintet will perform a tribute to the great drummer Max Roach, his centennial birthday. The concert will also include performances by SDSU's jazz combos, big band, and latin jazz ensemble (coached by Karl Soukup, Anthony Smith, and Brian Levy)
