Join Assistant Conductor Elias Miller for our Summer Night Music series as he leads the Columbus Symphony in an exciting program inspired by birds. Contemporary composer Sam Wu’s Eagle Huntress calls on the sounds of traditional Mongolian music to tell the story of a fearless girl determined to forge her own path. Haydn’s charming Symphony No. 83 is known as La poule — listen for the sounds of the hen that inspired this fanciful nickname. Tchaikovsky’s warm and lush Serenade for Strings, a perennial favorite, is the perfect way to round out a summer evening of invigorating music.

Be transported to the vibrant dance halls of Mexico City with Gabriela Ortiz’s Antrópolis. Ravel’s blazing take on the waltz whirls its way to a showstopping conclusion, while the music of Cooper Prize-winning alumnus Sam Wu celebrates the beauty in blurred boundaries. Affection for his close circle of friends inspired Elgar’s beloved “Enigma” Variations.

In celebration of the courage, patience and resilience displayed by people in times of great difficulty, ETHEL, the GRAMMY®-winning, genre-defying string quartet, joins forces with Allison Loggins-Hull, composer, flutist, producer and Daniel R. Lewis Composer Fellow to the Cleveland Orchestra. Together, they have elicited new commissions from four brilliant early-career composers: Migiwa “Miggy” Miyajima, Xavier Muzik, Sam Wu and 2022 Pulitzer Prize finalist Leilehua Lanzilotti. Loggins-Hull herself contributed her own masterwork to the project. Passionate, committed, hopeful and inspiring, each piece contributes to an experience which surpasses the sum of its parts.
