Twyla Tharp’s American masterpiece Nine Sinatra Songs is still sharp 40 years after its premiere. In it, Tharp effortlessly floats between dance genres, set to the familiar strains of Frank Sinatra hits. Two pieces from innovative choreographers Rena Butler and PNB’s own Kiyon Ross round out the program, and promise to connect us with our inner desires while allowing us to touch the stars.

A pair of Jerome Robbins ballets set to the music of Bach are featured alongside works by Alexei Ratmansky and Christopher Wheeldon. Robbins’ A Suite of Dances features a single male dancer—Mikhail Baryshnikov originated the role—interacting with the onstage cellist, creating a mood of friendly companionship. Brandenburg, Robbins’ final ballet, danced to four of the famed concertos of the title, is a series of pas de deux that evoke strikingly contrasting moods. Wheeldon’s After the Rain Pas de Deux has become one of his signature works, a transfixing dance that contains hints of spirituality and transcendence despite its seeming simplicity.

A young country girl, Tatiana, is introduced to a worldly aristocrat by her sister’s fiancé. Onegin instantly becomes Tatiana’s heart’s desire, though, in his eyes, she remains naive and uninteresting. Thus begins the tale that leads to a tragic duel, a royal marriage, and personal redemption. Based on the verse-novel Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin, John Cranko’s majestic and astounding ballet allows the strength and agency of our romantic heroine to shine through.

Count Almaviva's wandering eye has landed on his wife's maid Susanna, who's about to marry his own manservant Figaro. Racing against the clock, Figaro quickly concocts a plan to outwit his master. Will the wily duo outwit the Count in time to save the day?

We're taking the magic even further with an enchanting new production directed by acclaimed filmmaker James Gray, with costumes designed by celebrated fashion designer Christian Lacroix. (Yes, that's a shameless name drop.)
A brilliant cast of company favorites brings the leading couples to life: Craig Colclough and Janai Brugger as the ever-resourceful Figaro and Susanna, with Lucas Meachem and Ana María Martínez as the Count and Countess. Rihab Chaieb makes her company debut as Cherubino, the lovable scamp who always shows up in the middle of all the schemes—at the absolutely worst time.

Jerome Robbins is considered one of the most important ballet makers of the 20th century and his unmistakeable style has had a decisive influence on American dance. Interplay, his second choreographic work, premiered in 1945 in New York, provides a rousing opening to the four-part programme American Signatures that combines dance icons with current choreographic voices.

Performed to Morton Gould’s jazzy score, Interplay presents precisely what its title suggests: as if in a playground, the dancers meet, full of fun, but also competing with each other in Robbins’ choreography, that employs jazz elements to enrich the classical ballet vocabulary and with which the theatre maker and dance artist created one of the works that had a formative influence on his aesthetic.
