Multi-faceted works by Carola Bauckholt, Francesco Filidei and Martin Smolka form the programme of this concert evening in Graz. Together with ensemble members of Klangforum Wien, students of the master's programme “Performance Practice in Contemporary Music” (PPCM) at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz demonstrate their skills and perform Bauckholt's Pacific Time, Filidei's Ballata No. 7 and Smolka's ANDĚLSKÉ SCHODY - Angel Steps. At the helm of the concert is Claire Levacher.

The Trio Chagall returns to Wigmore Hall following its recent tour of the UK. Winners of the Schoenfeld International String Competition in September 2023, the Trio is involved in concert activity across Europe, most notably in Italy where it frequently performs in prestigious venues throughout the country.

Join us for an extraordinary evening of contemporary music at the "musica viva: François-Xavier Roth" concert, featuring the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. This remarkable event will take place on Friday, April 12, 2024, at 8:00 pm in the majestic Herkulessaal of the Munich Residence. An introduction to the evening's program will be provided at 6:45 pm, offering insights into the night's performances.

The concert will showcase an impressive lineup of works, including the world premiere of Francesco Filidei's Concerto for viola and orchestra, commissioned by the Bavarian Radios’ musica viva series and Milano Musicá Associazione per la musica contemporanea. The program also features Elisabeth Ogonek's "Cloudline" for orchestra 2021, commissioned by the BBC Proms and Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Iannis Xenakis' "Aïs" for baritone, percussion, and orchestra 1979-80, a piece commissioned by the Bavarian Radios’ musica viva series in 1980.

Under the baton of François-Xavier Roth, the concert will see performances by esteemed artists including baritone Georg Nigl, percussionist Dirk Rothbrust, violist Antoine Tamestit, and sound designer Norbert Ommer. The evening promises to be a profound exploration of contemporary music, highlighted by Xenakis' "Aïs," a piece that delves into the themes of death and the afterlife, and Filidei's Viola Concerto, a new addition to the contemporary music repertoire.

This concert is a part of the Bavarian Radios’ musica viva series, renowned for being one of the world’s most prestigious platforms for contemporary and future-oriented music. The series has been instrumental in premiering experimental works and performances for orchestra and chamber music.

The biblical Book of Genesis provided the inspiration for commissioning seven concise works from seven different composers: Lisa Streich (Sweden), Francesco Filidei (Italy), Chen Yi (China/USA), Hannah Kendall (England), Mikel Urquiza (Spain), Saad Haddad (USA), and Mark Andre (Germany). These new Genesis compositions will be performed after the overture from Darius Milhaud’s ballet La création du monde has already set the musical theme. They will be followed by Kaija Saariaho’s last completed work, the trumpet concerto Hush, written for the jazz trumpeter Verneri Pohjola. Finally, we will turn our attention to the soaring geyser fountains of Iceland, which Jón Leifs, a native of the world’s largest volcanic island and a composer of extraordinary sonic power, translated into musical form and energy.
