Collaboratively created by Grammy Award-winning musical director Martha Gonzalez, Alpert Award-winning interdisciplinary artist Virginia Grise, and directed by Kendra Ware, Riding the Currents of the Wilding Wind is an all-in-one concert, album, and live theater performance. Stories from Their Dogs Came with Them by Helena María Viramontes are brought to life in a multifaceted sonic landscape —a mix of Mexican and Afro-Cuban rhythms, jazz, funk, rock and gospel— performed by Martha Gonzalez, Tylana Enomoto, Juan Perez, and actor Lulu Matute. The music is matched by a rich visual world created by set designer Tanya Orellana, video artist Yee Eun Nam, lighting designer María Cristina Fusté, and costume designer David Arevalo.

Shipping & Handling is a theatrical experience constructed as a night out at the theatre told in reverse.  The playwright shuffles chronology in order to scramble our historical expectations around Black plays, and unmap our limited vision of a future AI world. Are creations always a reflection of their creator? Can an AI bear witness to divine prophecy? Shipping & Handling seeks to transmit a signal for locating the tone of what it means to be human in this specific moment, and collectively reimagine our future design.

Playwright Lauren Yee (Cambodian Rock Band) is rehearsing her newest show about her father (which she has not told him about), when he joyfully bursts through the doors and interrupts the actors. After he later goes missing, the younger Yee must embark on a quest through San Francisco’s famous Chinatown, beyond the iconic Dragon’s Gate, through a bustling maze of alleys and magical portals, to find him before it’s too late.

Bitingly funny, heartfelt, and imaginative, King of the Yees is an exuberant epic of rediscovering heritage and becoming a part of, instead of apart from, one’s story.

Soon these three generations of Black women begin to feel their past and present closing in. A finalist for the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Zora Howard’s hilarious, haunting, and taut 90-minute drama has a lot more cooking underneath the surface.

When combustible chemistry reignites, mayhem occurs, and strong passions and stronger personalities take over. Noël Coward’s most popular and enduring comedy is a funny, tempestuous battle of equals. Director KJ Sanchez introduces new locations and time periods that add glamour and grit to Coward’s iconic, wry comedy. The first act will take place in 1931 Argentina, while the second act takes place in modern-day Uruguay.

On Gold Mountain, composed by Nathan Wang and based on the book by Lisa See, tells the true story of Fong See, a pioneer of Los Angeles’ Chinatown who immigrated to America to work and find his fortune. Along the way he overcame many obstacles, finding both love and hardship. Most importantly, he discovered himself. In the opera, we not only relive the experiences of Fong See, his American wife Ticie, and other Chinese pioneers, but we also realize the ways in which memory and experience influence our sense of who we are.

Utilizing the multi-storied, multi-roomed Strand Theater as non-traditional theater space, audiences will be broken up into four groups that independently tour Fefu’s home. Stories and histories come into play as you happen across conversations as Fefu’s bohemian and raucous cohorts gossip, question, flirt, provoke, and ultimately reveal (or hide?) the universal understandings between women. As muscular and searing in her deliberate use of language as Albee and Miller at their best; as acidic as Clare Boothe Luce’s iconic play The Women; and patron saint to blockbuster hits like Sleep No More—Fornés’s Fefu and Her Friends is an invitation to a theatrical experience like none other.
