The Hobby Center is thrilled to announce the ExxonMobil Discovery Series: Pick Me Last, a captivating educational event set to take place from September 23 to September 25, 2024, at Zilkha Hall. This unique Discovery Educational Series, specifically designed for education outreach, offers an extraordinary opportunity for 5th graders and their teachers in Houston public schools to engage with the performing arts at no cost.

Directed by Steve Scott and penned by the award-winning playwright Idris Goodwin, Pick Me Last is a dynamic, high-energy production that explores themes of kindness, acceptance, and diversity through the eyes of ten-year-old Wes and his friend Chavonne. The play is a vibrant mix of interesting characters, including appearances by historical and contemporary figures like Sigmund Freud and Elon Musk, who add depth and humor to the story. The narrative follows Wes, who uses music to escape the chaos of his home life and consistently finds himself picked last for playground games. Chavonne's discovery of The Butterfly Effect inspires a plan to change Wes's fate, leading to unexpected lessons about friendship and the challenges we face.

This event is part of the Hobby Center's broader initiative to introduce 5th grade students to dance, music, and theater in an engaging and educational manner. The series aligns with TEKS standards and aims to enrich students' learning experiences and sense of belonging.
