Experience the profound and atmospheric compositions of Elgar and Vaughan Williams performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano, with the talented David Cohen on cello. This captivating concert is set to take place at the Barbican on Sunday, 15 December 2024, at 7pm, promising an evening of sweeping musical landscapes.

The program features Ralph Vaughan Williams' Symphony No. 9, a piece that reflects the composer's contemplation on the aftermath of two world wars, offering a blend of darkness and warmth, dread and hope. Following an interval, Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto will take center stage, showcasing its unforgettable opening and haunting themes, a departure from Elgar's earlier works yet one of his most beloved compositions. The concert will also include Arnold Bax's Tintagel, a symphonic poem that vividly paints the Cornish countryside and its historic castle, evoking the tales of its past inhabitants.

Join the BBC Philharmonic and conductor John Wilson at MediaCityUK today for a celebration of springtime’s abundance. First on the programme is a selection of works from celebrated American composer Edward MacDowell, whose philanthropic vision became his great legacy. MacDowell was deeply inspired by the idyllic surroundings of his farm in rural New Hampshire, and he composed many of his best-loved works there, including To a Wild Rose, which we hear today. Towards the end of his life, MacDowell and his wife Marian founded the MacDowell Residency, an artistic retreat based at their home, and where they hoped that other creatives might benefit from the peace and tranquillity. The prestigious Residency continues to thrive more than a century after MacDowell’s death, with many internationally recognised artists amongst its Fellows. This afternoon, the BBC Philharmonic’s Principal Cellist Peter Dixon is soloist in MacDowell’s Romance for cello and orchestra, a gentle yet stirring work, suggestive of a woodland stroll in the light of the setting sun.

Different natural worlds, including perspectives from bottom of the sea and the intricacies of a garden, form a musical lens of works for flute, viola and harp by Miguel del Águila, Arnold Bax, and Sofia Gubaidulina.

Opportunity awaits you as a cellist at SFCM. Part of SFCM’s comprehensive strings program, the cello department has a studio of about 29 students, all honing their craft with the guidance of four dedicated faculty members. Students can perform with resident ensembles such as the Conservatory Orchestra and chamber groups from the baroque to the contemporary, as well as enter the annual String Concerto Competition.

The second concert of Season VIII features LA Opera Orchestra Principal Oboe Leslie Reed, pianist Edith Orloff, violinists Roger Wilkie and Ana Landauer, violist Shawn Mann and cellist John Walz in a recital program of favorite works that reflect the lyric side of the oboe, ranging from the pastoral to folk traditions, including works inspired by famous paintings - projections of which will be displayed during the performance.
