Let's briefly recall the main plot of this ambiguous myth. The Titan Prometheus stole fire from the gods, one of the attributes of their power over the world, to make its benefits available to ordinary mortals and contribute to the development of humanity. Offended by this sacrilege, Zeus decided to take cruel revenge on both the brave man and humanity. He chained Prometheus to the rocks of the Caucasus and daily sent an Eagle to eat the condemned man's liver by day. At night, the liver would grow back, and Prometheus's suffering would begin anew. Simultaneously, the ruler of Olympus decided to test humanity. He ordered the creation of a woman named Pandora, whom the gods endowed with dazzling beauty and many talents, and Zeus gave her a mysterious Box as a dowry for her future husband. However, the gift was subject to a prohibition against opening it. The gullible Epimetheus, brother of Prometheus, married Pandora, who, yielding to her curiosity, opened the Box, releasing all the misfortunes that have befallen humanity ever since. Fortunately, Hope was also hidden within Pandora's Box, which remains there to this day as a solace for humanity.

We conclude the concert season with Bernstein, Gershwin, and Glass, three icons of American music. Bernstein's first musical from 1944 is brimming with edgy rhythms, jazzy harmonies, and blues-tinged melancholy—the dances are the musical essence. Before Bernstein, Gershwin had not only chosen a revolutionary theme in his opera "Porgy and Bess"—it's about love and survival in a Black neighborhood—but also incorporated the music of his protagonists, such as spirituals, blues, and jazz, into the composition. Morton Gould arranged this "American Folk Opera" for the concert hall. In 2023, the MDR Symphony Orchestra and Maki Namekawa premiered Philip Glass's new piano concerto with great success—it can now also be heard in Suhl and Leipzig.

The ONYX Ensemble is a piano quintet formed of students based in Manchester at the Royal Northern College of Music and is one of the only professional groups in the world to work solely with this instrumentation. Due to their rare instrumentation, it has allowed the group to explore a wide range of chamber works that are incredibly unique and as a group aim to put underrepresented works side by side with the “classics” that audiences are typically used to hearing at chamber concerts. The ensembles performances have been noted as being incredibly energetic and full of passion, due to the innovative programmes they put together and the vibrant playing of the members. All coming from very different musical backgrounds, each individual member brings something special to the group while also balancing their own musical commitments outside of the ensemble. Constantly pushing for new works for their instrumentation, they have collaborated with renowned composers including Danny Elfman and Xavier Foley, as well as encourage new and upcoming composers to explore their ideas with the ensemble. The group have various exciting projects ahead including a recital series at Manchester Cathedral, multiple European and World premieres, and a tour of South Wales this May.

Set to the music of Mikael Karlsson, "SISU" is an exploration of change, bravery, vulnerability, and the ephemeral nature of the art of dance.

"Petal," also choreographed by Helen Pickett, offers a sensory feast of motion, light, and music. Dancers navigate the evolution of relationships through sweeping movements and innovative partnering, all set to the vibrant compositions of Philip Glass and Thomas Montgomery Newman. This colorful and dynamic ballet promises to leave audiences feeling fulfilled and hopeful.

It conveys a sense of tribal unity through a drum circle feel, traditional call-and-response, and a memorable, repetitive melody. It was rearranged into a woodwind quintet (then for orchestra in 2020) for Coleman's GRAMMY-award-winning group, Imani Winds, to serve as an anthem celebrating the ensemble's diverse heritages.

John Adams' opera Doctor Atomic tells the story of the development of the atomic bomb by Robert Oppenheimer. The original opera from 2005 does not so much recount the historical events, but focuses on the motivations and psychology of the involved individuals (Robert Oppenheimer, Kitty Oppenheimer, and a handful of scientists from the Manhattan Project). Additionally, the symphony that Adams composed a few years later based on material from his opera illustrates how unchecked thirst for knowledge can drive humanity to its own destruction. Philip Glass' Icarus at the Edge of Time, on the other hand, tells the story of a boy who travels to a black hole out of insatiable curiosity. Michaël Pas serves as the narrator in a musical story where the mythological figure of Icarus is redefined: his longing for the unattainable does not cause him to fall from the sky, but allows him to experience one of Einstein's greatest insights. Acrobat Robin Witt takes on the role of Icarus, turning this evening into a spectacular event. As a dramatic counterbalance to Adams' Doctor Atomic Symphony, Glass' Icarus at the Edge of Time offers a positive perspective on humanity's drive to test the limits of knowledge and its own impermanence.

He composed Glassworks, a work in six movements, in 1981. Intending it to be – aptly, for the decade –‘Walkman-suitable’, he released both an LP and a tape cassette of the piece. Each had its own separate mix: the LP was intended for home listening and the cassette – with a headphone-specific mix – was intended for personal tape players.

Glass’s efforts paid off, and the work was an instant success. Chamber piece it may be, but it is no less rich and varied in its rhythms and textures, using members of all instrument families to create a shimmering, anthemic sound.

First, though, Chloë Hanslip weaves modern-day magic from Philip Glass – and if you enjoy Barber’s Adagio for Strings, you’re going to love his Essay No.2.

The compositions "Christian Zeal and Activity" by John Adams and "Itaipú" by Philip Glass are dedicated to different spiritual traditions in America. In his work, written in 1973, John Adams quotes and arranges the English hymn "Onward, Christian Soldiers", which, despite its military tone, was associated with the American civil rights movement. "Itaipú" by Philip Glass deals with the technical colonization of South America. With the construction of the "Itaipú" dam, the world's largest at the time and completed in 1984, which supplies Brazil and Paraguay with electricity, around 40,000 Guaraní indigenous people lost their homeland. Philip Glass composed this moving choral-symphonic work based on the Guaraní creation myth of a flood. The voices of the Guaraní are brought back to life by the Philharmonic Choir and report on the difficult relationship between man and nature. Embedded between these works of American minimalism is the new piano concerto by a crossover artist between different musical genres: Bryce Dressner. The universal US composer became famous on the electric guitar as a member of the indie rock band "The National". At the same time, his reputation as an orchestral composer developed. The German premiere of his new piano concerto will be presented by the well-known pianist Alice Sara Ott in Munich.

With his most famous composition, Gustav Holst takes us through the imaginary spheres of space and characterizes the planets - more mythologically than astronomically. In Philip Glass' opera "The Voyage" the journey also leads into space - far beyond the horizon that Holst still considered unattainable. The selected opera excerpts raise two central questions: Stephen Hawking, the scientist, ponders the possibilities of overcoming boundaries, both physical and mental; the commander of the spaceship and the inhabitants of another star ask themselves what and who awaits them at the destination of their journey. Anton Webern came up with the idea of ​​a string quartet in 1905 during a hiking holiday with his cousin Wilhelmine Mörtl, with whom he had fallen madly in love and whom he married in 1911. The work remained a fragment, and Webern only completed the slow movement. This is almost orchestral in nature, the harmony largely tonal, even though Webern certainly explores its limits - but always with references to the sound world of late Romanticism.

In this way, Casco Phil draws a common thread through three centuries of musical tranquility. The crowning glory is the enchanting Spiegel im Spiegel; not only the most performed work by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, but also one of the top hits in the Klara Top 100 for years. Together with violinist Elise Bertrand, Casco Phil invites his audience on a meditative journey through history, in search of inner peace and beauty.
