The wind quintet WindSync embraces the classics and the growing contemporary repertoire with a fresh sensibility. Versatile and vibrant, the group plays “many idioms authoritatively, elegantly, with adroit technique, and with great fun” (All About the Arts). In the span of one performance, they can cover vast musical ground from revitalized standards to freshly inked works to folk and songbook, the common thread telling a compelling story about music history and our human selves.

Bronze Medalist at the 2025 Van Cliburn Competition, American pianist Evren Ozel has won numerous honors and awards; most recently Evren was awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2023. Other accolades include second prize and special prizes for Best Mazurka and Best Polonaise at the 2020 U.S. National Chopin Competition, first prize at the 2016 Boston Symphony Concerto Competition, second prize and the Mozart and Chopin special prizes at the 2018 Dublin International Piano Competition, second prize at the 2016 Thomas and Evon Cooper International Competition, and scholarships from the U.S Chopin Foundation and Young Arts Foundation.

The Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado has repeatedly explored the fascinating world of the Amazon and captured its beauty and threats in images. Now he has enriched this photographic project with a musical encounter: Together with conductor Simone Menezes, he combines his images with the sounds composed by his compatriot Heitor Villa-Lobos in 1958 as a tribute to the Amazon. Simone Menezes arranged Villa-Lobos' opulent "Floresta do Amazonas" for orchestra and soprano, and Salgado matched each musical sequence with the appropriate photograph. "A perfect connection, almost as if Villa-Lobos' music was written for Salgado's photos," describes Simone Menezes the result. The Dresden Philharmonic, under the direction of Simone Menezes, performs Villa-Lobos' powerful Rainforest Suite, while following Salgado's precise dramaturgy, the corresponding photographic works are shown on the large screen.

Our final chamber music open mic night of the season: We are delighted to present a program with an unusual instrumentation and an enchanting world of sound and rhythm. Four string players and the two percussionists from our ranks will perform a concert of fascinating works. This includes a brand-new piece by Gabriele Campagna – a violinist colleague from our orchestra who composes "on the side" and whose string quartet we premiered last season. We are eager to hear which facets of the diverse percussion arsenal he will explore today. A veritable acoustic choreography is the work by the American-born composer Andy Pape, who now lives in Denmark – the title playfully combines the words "cadence" and "dance.

With a distinguished career spanning over five decades, Davies has led some of the world’s most acclaimed orchestras, festivals, and opera houses. A long-time interpreter of Arvo Pärt’s music, Davies will conduct the composer’s Symphony No. 4 Los Angeles. Maki Namekawa, known for her dedication to contemporary music, will perform Philip Glass’s Mishima Piano Concerto, inspired by the score for Paul Schrader’s film Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters.

In turbo speed from the 18th to the 20th century: The Sonic.Art Saxophone Quartet moves effortlessly from Bach's B Minor Suite to Bernstein's West Side Story in the space of half an hour, condensing the sound colours of an entire orchestra onto soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones. In the lunchtime concert, the four musicians from Belarus, Australia, Japan and Germany show how these worlds can be brought together with virtuosity. Their stylistic confidence, joy of playing and technical as well as musical perfection have already earned these well-rehearsed musicians a number of important international awards. We are looking forward to their debut at the Alte Oper and combine the event with an invitation to a small lunch in our foyers after the concert.

Alone in a society they reject, they transform their room into an imaginary kingdom, a sanctuary of a symbiotic relationship where love borders on obsession and conceals a latent violence. When two friends, Gérard and then Agathe, intrude upon their private world, the threat of losing Paul draws Élisabeth into a vicious cycle of dangerous games, jealousy, and manipulation. In this short novel published in 1929, the author illuminates the fragility of adolescence, the impossibility of suspending time, and the disastrous consequences of an all-consuming passion.

A new presentation of the classic fairytale La Belle et la Bête blurs the boundaries of film and opera, fusing Jean Cocteau’s 1946 film with a powerful and arresting score by Philip Glass, thus honoring two of the great artistic minds of modern times. Opera Parallèle is the first company to present performances of all three operas Glass wrote in homage to Cocteau, having performed Orphée in 2011, Les Enfants Terribles in 2017, and La Belle et la Bête in 2022

This will be a dazzling performance on our very own queen of instruments! Our guest is the Spaniard Juan de la Rubia, organist at the famous Sagrada Família cathedral in Barcelona. He begins his multifaceted program with the magnificent overture to Handel's 1743 psychological drama "Samson." A superb example of French Renaissance music is Eustache du Caurroy's 1610 Fantasia on the then-popular and enchanting song "Une jeune fillette." Profound emotion stands alongside explosive outbursts in Bach's legendary Chaconne in D minor. Charles Tournemire never wrote down his choral improvisations, such as the one on the Easter sequence "Victimae Paschali Laudes"—they survive only because he recorded them as early as 1930. Jehan Alain, who died young in World War II, wrote impressive variations on a folk song by the 16th-century master Clément Janequin.

Countertenor John Holiday is the titular Akhnaten, determined to lead Egypt into a new age even as his plan to abandon the old gods puts his kingdom (and his life) in peril. Mezzo-soprano Sun-Ly Pierce is his queen Nefertiti, soprano So Young Park is the powerful dowager Queen Tye, and Grammy winner Zachary James reprises his memorable role as Amenhotep III, leading the audience through the ritualistic action on the stage.

Director Phelim McDermott revives his visually arresting production, replete with soaring acrobats, astonishing jugglers, and towering sets. With a libretto drawing on ancient texts like The Book of the Dead and a hypnotic, atmospheric score, Akhnaten portrays a doomed visionary with all his feats and foibles. Finland’s Dalia Stasevska makes her company debut conducting this tribute to one of the most transformative chapters in Egyptian history.

He is the General Director and President of Opera Philadelphia, and the Artistic Director of SongStudio at Carnegie Hall. He has with appeared many of the world’s leading opera companies and orchestras including the Metropolitan Opera, Opera National de Paris, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Teatro Real, New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, LA Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble, and NDR at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, among others. He has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Versailles, Madison Square Garden, The Hollywood Bowl, Kabuki-Za Tokyo, The Guggenheim, The Park Avenue Armory, and Little Island. As a producer, he has created projects for The Paris Opera, The New York Philharmonic, The BBC Proms, WQXR, and St. Ann’s Warehouse among others. Costanzo graduated with honors from Princeton University, and Manhattan School of Music, where he is now on the board of trustees along with being on the board of National Black Theater. A winner of the Met Opera Competition and Operalia, Costanzo also has an Honorary Doctorate from Manhattan School of Music, a History Makers Award from the New York Historical, has been a visiting fellow Oxford University, and a distinguished visiting scholar at Harvard. He has been in a Merchant Ivory film and has a forthcoming book for Farrar, Straus, and Giroux.

In early January, the focus of “Audiospaa” series will be on ERSO’s cello section, joined on stage by the renowned vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis. The programme, curated by ERSO cello principal Theodor Sink, creates a compelling dialogue between the works of Arvo Pärt and Philip Glass. Glass’s minimalist sound world is represented by Façades, Secret Agent, and Attack and Fall, while Pärt’s meditative pieces include Missa brevis, Silouan’s Song, and L’abbé Agathon. The evening concludes with Hanging D, a reflective work by Dutch composer and pianist Joep Beving. The concert is conducted by Kaspar Mänd.

Opening our concert is a piece by a titan among minimalists, Philip Glass. Our new Artist-in-Residence Simone Porter launches the Concerto with propulsive force, then invites you to lose yourself in the harmonies of the Adagio, and leaves you breathless in the sensational last movement—but gives you a final moment to dream about the journey you’ve just taken.

Let's briefly recall the main plot of this ambiguous myth. The Titan Prometheus stole fire from the gods, one of the attributes of their power over the world, to make its benefits available to ordinary mortals and contribute to the development of humanity. Offended by this sacrilege, Zeus decided to take cruel revenge on both the brave man and humanity. He chained Prometheus to the rocks of the Caucasus and daily sent an Eagle to eat the condemned man's liver by day. At night, the liver would grow back, and Prometheus's suffering would begin anew. Simultaneously, the ruler of Olympus decided to test humanity. He ordered the creation of a woman named Pandora, whom the gods endowed with dazzling beauty and many talents, and Zeus gave her a mysterious Box as a dowry for her future husband. However, the gift was subject to a prohibition against opening it. The gullible Epimetheus, brother of Prometheus, married Pandora, who, yielding to her curiosity, opened the Box, releasing all the misfortunes that have befallen humanity ever since. Fortunately, Hope was also hidden within Pandora's Box, which remains there to this day as a solace for humanity.

Koyaanisqatsi (1982) is a documentary without dialogue, examining the contrasts between our technologically advanced urban life and vast natural landscapes. Director Godfrey Reggio and minimalist composer Philip Glass transcended language barriers through the universally accessible mediums of video and music, inviting each viewer to interpret the film as they choose.

We conclude the concert season with Bernstein, Gershwin, and Glass, three icons of American music. Bernstein's first musical from 1944 is brimming with edgy rhythms, jazzy harmonies, and blues-tinged melancholy—the dances are the musical essence. Before Bernstein, Gershwin had not only chosen a revolutionary theme in his opera "Porgy and Bess"—it's about love and survival in a Black neighborhood—but also incorporated the music of his protagonists, such as spirituals, blues, and jazz, into the composition. Morton Gould arranged this "American Folk Opera" for the concert hall. In 2023, the MDR Symphony Orchestra and Maki Namekawa premiered Philip Glass's new piano concerto with great success—it can now also be heard in Suhl and Leipzig.

Listening to live music is a wonderful experience. In the »Klangzeit« (Sound Time) concerts, you can close your eyes and escape everyday life for a moment. In the entertaining, hour-long concerts featuring the string players of Ensemble Resonanz, you can listen in a relaxed atmosphere, express yourself, sing along to well-known songs and move freely. Here, everyone can be themselves. This makes the format particularly suitable for people with dementia and their relatives. All venues are accessible.

Quer durch die Musikgeschichte geht es dabei – bis hin zu a new Werk, das der mit dem »Hindemith-Preis« ausgezeichnete Regensburger SJ Hanke für Orgel und Streichquartett geschrieben hat.
