Experience “one of the greatest ballets of all time” (New York Times, October 2022) right here in Grand Rapids in our Peter Martin Wege Theatre as Grand Rapids Ballet presents In The Upper Room by renowned choreographer Twyla Tharp. Be captivated as our dancers push themselves to the edge of physical limits, propelled by the driving Philip Glass score. As the work is performed in both sneakers and pointe shoes, the choreography draws on elements of classical ballet, jazz, tap dance, yoga, and boxing to create a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience. This program also features the return of Serenade, Balanchine’s memorable 1934 neo-classic masterpiece, featuring sweeping choreography, exquisite stage patterns, and iconic long tulle dresses, all paired with a lush score by Tchaikovsky. Two of ballet’s most celebrated works in one unforgettable program makes this a performance you do not want to miss.

Opera Orlando returns to the Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater for a special add-on production that concludes its 2023-24 All for Art season. A dark retelling of Grimms' The Juniper Tree, a contemporary chamber opera by composers Philip Glass and Robert Moran to a libretto by Arthur Yorinks, is a tale about a jealous and scheming stepmother who murders her stepson and serves him up in a stew to his unsuspecting father, only to then be killed herself by the stepson who is reincarnated as a beautiful bird. It is a haunting and hypnotic opera with some of Glass’ most tuneful melodies.

Opera Orlando goes back On the Town and concludes its 2023-24 All for Art season with a dark retelling of Grimm’s The Juniper Tree, a contemporary chamber opera by composers Philip Glass and Robert Moran to a libretto by Arthur Yorinks. A classic Jerome Robbins ballet pointing the way toward the future combines with three works from contemporary choreographers. Glass Pieces is Robbins’ electrifying 1983 ballet to music by the iconic contemporary composer Philip Glass. Alexei Ratmansky employed a classic 19th-century piano composition from Mussorgsky to create a ballet that translates the music into the choreographer’s distinctive 21st-century idioms. Gianna Reisen’s Play Time, which debuted at the 2022 Fall Fashion Gala, is set to a score by Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Solange Knowles. And Red Angels, from the late choreographer Ulysses Dove, has remained a staple in the Company repertory since its debut in 1994.

This specially curated performance is designed to provide a friendly, inclusive environment where individuals with sensory processing challenges, including autism, can experience New York City Ballet. Slight modifications will include a relaxed entry/exit policy, adjustments to lighting and sound levels, designated break areas throughout the Theater, additional event staffing to assist with audience needs, and pre-visit resources, including a visual schedule. This one-time-only performance features two ballets from NYCB’s expansive repertory. Christopher Wheeldon’s Scènes de Ballet, featuring 64 students from the School of American ballet, offers a glimpse into the rehearsal studio as young dancers refine their artistry. Jerome Robbins’ Glass Pieces, set to music by contemporary composer Philip Glass, highlights the graceful athleticism of the corps de ballet, as the ensemble weaves across the stage with dynamic fervor.

Sensory Friendly Performances

The city of Paris was ablaze the night Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps premiered in 1913: Riots that reportedly began in the theater’s aisles—visceral responses to the ballet’s unconventional rhythms and modern aesthetic—poured into the streets. Yet in its 110-year history, the work has become one of the most recognizable and beloved triumphs of the 20th century. In this program, the Festival’s Resident Conductor and Director of Orchestral Activities John Kennedy pairs this monumental work with a thrilling US premiere of Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 14.
