The Dublin Guitar Quartet, the first-ever guitar ensemble to be featured at Bravo Vail, promises to deliver a mesmerizing performance, showcasing their unique talent and versatility. The ensemble's program includes transcriptions of Philip Glass's string quartets and piano etudes, pieces originally composed to enhance his own playing technique. These works, known for their pulsating rhythms and captivating melodies, were initially popularized by Glass's own ensemble before being adopted by more traditional concert-hall ensembles.

The quartet, consisting of Brian Bolger, Pat Brunnock, Chien Buggle, and Thomas O’Durcain, has garnered international acclaim, with their touring supported by Culture Ireland. This performance at Bravo Vail marks a significant milestone in their career, introducing their extraordinary interpretations of Glass's compositions to a new audience.

The evening's program will feature selections from Philip Glass's Piano Etudes, String Quartet No. 3 "Mishima," String Quartet No. 2 "Company," and Movement No. 1 from the Concerto for Saxophone Quartet. The city of Paris was ablaze the night Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps premiered in 1913: Riots that reportedly began in the theater’s aisles—visceral responses to the ballet’s unconventional rhythms and modern aesthetic—poured into the streets. Yet in its 110-year history, the work has become one of the most recognizable and beloved triumphs of the 20th century. In this program, the Festival’s Resident Conductor and Director of Orchestral Activities John Kennedy pairs this monumental work with a thrilling US premiere of Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 14.

In Another Little Piece of My Heart, Montgomery evokes passion and palpitations, while Murphy’s Strum is punctuated by a steady pulse of pizzicato notes similar to a heartbeat, and Glass’ celebrated “Mishima” Quartet is carried along by an uninterrupted stream of subtle emotions.

This specially curated performance is designed to provide a friendly, inclusive environment where individuals with sensory processing challenges, including autism, can experience New York City Ballet. Slight modifications will include a relaxed entry/exit policy, adjustments to lighting and sound levels, designated break areas throughout the Theater, additional event staffing to assist with audience needs, and pre-visit resources, including a visual schedule. This one-time-only performance features two ballets from NYCB’s expansive repertory. Christopher Wheeldon’s Scènes de Ballet, featuring 64 students from the School of American ballet, offers a glimpse into the rehearsal studio as young dancers refine their artistry. Jerome Robbins’ Glass Pieces, set to music by contemporary composer Philip Glass, highlights the graceful athleticism of the corps de ballet, as the ensemble weaves across the stage with dynamic fervor.

The programme includes the exciting dancing textures created by pioneering multi-layered tape pieces such as Steve Reich’s Violin Phase and Vermont Counterpoint. Richly complex patterns create compelling listening in Julius Eastman’s Joy Boy and modern New York icon Julia Wolfe’s East Broadway. We’ll look to the British version of the movement with Michael Nyman’s captivating In C Interlude while the weaving melodies hypnotise in Anna Clyne’s Just as they are. The concert will close with a performance of Gavin Bryars’ extraordinary Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet, in celebration of the composer’s strong links to Portsmouth in his highly experimental ensemble the Portsmouth Sinfonia.

A classic Jerome Robbins ballet pointing the way toward the future combines with three works from contemporary choreographers. Glass Pieces is Robbins’ electrifying 1983 ballet to music by the iconic contemporary composer Philip Glass. Alexei Ratmansky employed a classic 19th-century piano composition from Mussorgsky to create a ballet that translates the music into the choreographer’s distinctive 21st-century idioms. Gianna Reisen’s Play Time, which debuted at the 2022 Fall Fashion Gala, is set to a score by Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Solange Knowles. And Red Angels, from the late choreographer Ulysses Dove, has remained a staple in the Company repertory since its debut in 1994.

A dark retelling of Grimms' The Juniper Tree, a contemporary chamber opera by composers Philip Glass and Robert Moran to a libretto by Arthur Yorinks, is a tale about a jealous and scheming stepmother who murders her stepson and serves him up in a stew to his unsuspecting father, only to then be killed herself by the stepson who is reincarnated as a beautiful bird. It is a haunting and hypnotic opera with some of Glass’ most tuneful melodies.

This masterful work transports audiences to the height of the Russian Imperial Ballet with its glittering costumes, masterful choreography, and Tchaikovsky’s evocative score. Twyla Tharp’s, In the Upper Room, closes the December program with a “transcendent experience for both audience and performers”. Created in 1986, the work features a commissioned score by Philip Glass and showcases Tharp’s choreography, which blends a diverse range of movements, including boxing, tap dance, yoga, ballet, and full-speed sprinting.

One of the most admired pianists of his generation, Inon Barnatan performs as guest artist with SFCM students in the opening concert of the Chamber Music Tuesday series. Soloist, curator and collaborator, Barnatan has soloed with major orchestras both in the US and abroad, and is a regular collaborator with renown artists such as Renée Fleming and Alisa Weilerstein. Barnatan is also Music Director of the La Jolla Music Society SummerFest and is on the rosters of both Opus 3 Artists and Askonas Holt, and is a Pentatone recording artist

Revered conductor Riccardo Muti leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Felix Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony, Richard Strauss’s Aus Italien, and a New York premiere by Philip Glass inspired by Italy and written to honor Muti. Mendelssohn’s sunny Fourth Symphony is a hugely popular work, and it serves as a companion piece to Strauss’s rarely heard “symphonic fantasy,” last performed at Carnegie Hall nearly 50 years ago. In both pieces, the great German composers distill eye-opening travels across Italy into wonderfully evocative music.

It’s been said that when sisters Katia and Marielle Labèque play together they become one artistic personality, but that doesn’t remotely do justice to the individual brilliance of these two remarkable pianists. Together, they’ll open Ravel’s fairytale storybook, and take on works by Debussy, Schubert and Philip Glass.

This program features Philip Glass’s popular first concerto for violin, with his iconic sound: open, full of motion, and yet without a lot of tonal changes. The soloist is Chase Spruill, who is a champion of Glass’s violin music. This contrasts with Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony: regal and full of dueling themes, and which also features one of his best waltzes.
