Karma Roulette Quartet
The Karma Roulette Quartet is made up of four veteran multi-instrumentalists, composers, and bandleaders. The group features compositions by award-winning composer/arranger Michael Smolens, work by renowned Brazilian composer Egberto Gismonti and musically-related poetry, and soundscapes created on-the-spot. Their sound includes nearly 30 different instruments and draws from the worlds of West-Africa, Afro-Cuba, North-India, Turkey, and Brazil — as well as jazz, funk, and classical styles. The violinist's solo looping piece with voice and the two-percussion duet are audience favorites.

When Andrea is performing at The Freight, she is truly in her element. She started playing The Freight with her former fresh radical folk band “Rebecca Riots” in the 1990’s and has continued to sing and write songs with a conscience ever since. With Berkeley as her home base for decades and her many years of activism to draw upon, Andrea uses her bluesy, alto voice to deliver original songs that reflect the gritty realities and tender hopes of these times.

Please join us as we celebrate the music and adventurousness of Mary Lou Williams and Tania Maria. They were—and are—maestras of BOTH HANDS at the piano, the left hand being just as agile and strong as the right. For jazz icon Mary Lou Williams, blues and Spirituals were the foundation, and for Brazilian pianist Tania Maria, mixing samba with just about anything provided new and inspired grooves. We will explore these styles and more as we acknowledge two piano powerhouses in our final family matinee of the season!
