There are some shared themes between this concert and our fall concert, although there are certainly some marked contrasts.  The “Danse Bacchanale” by Camille Saint-Saëns is another dance (alluding to Anna Clyne’s DANCE), but with bacchanale referring to a wild party with drunken revelry. And Potentia is a new work based upon a poem, as was DANCE. Commissioned by Orchestra Santa Monica, Potentia presents a poem of the same name written by Anne Carmack, Santa Monica’s first poet laureate. Composed by Jason Anthony Gomez and narrated/sung by the renowned baritone Jubilant Sykes, OSM is proud to perform the world premiere of this moving work depicting passages of life. Edward Elgar‘s fourteen variations on an original theme, aka the Enigma Variations, represent meaningful personal relationships in the composer’s life, with each variation being a sketch of one of his friends, and including himself.

Only a few days into his visit to Italy, Mendelssohn, like many of us fortunate enough to visit Bel Paese, was already smitten: “This is Italy!” he wrote, “…and I am loving it.” He completed his Fourth Symphony shortly after his return home, and the piece — alongside the other Italy-inspired works on the program by Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, and Charpentier — paints a vibrant picture of the country as seen through the eyes of fellow non-Italians, all united in affection for the vivacious Italian culture, food, wine, and spirit.

In advance of Valentine’s Day, we share three heart-felt musical depictions of love: the tragedy of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers from the pen of Tchaikovsky; Saint-Saëns’ romantic, poetic musings in an inspired dialogue between two soloists; and the nostalgic longing for home experienced by Dvořák. Next up is the riotously colorful concerto for violin and orchestra by Arturo Márquez, violin concerto Fandango based on Mariachi music. One of the great masterworks, Elgar’s Cello Concerto is a wistful, beautiful piece that falls towards the end of his composing career, when he wondered if he had any musical relevance, and there’s a sense of solitude – even loneliness – that haunts this work. Elsewhere, the Ulster Orchestra brass take to the skies, first in the sun chariot of the Greek God Helios in Saint-Saëns’s Phaeton Overture and then as a flock of whooper swans in that famous finale of Sibelius’s triumphant Fifth Symphony.

Music would never be the same after Igor Stravinsky unleashed The Firebird in 1910 – a ballet score that would herald the pictorial powers with which the composer would shock and enchant generations of theatregoers. Stravinsky found the perfect subject matter in the collision of the evil magician Kaschchei with the just and irrepressible Firebird. The suite of music from the ballet ends in an infernal dance ripe for Stravinsky’s own brand of violent syncopation. Marios Papadopoulos conducts it here, alongside wickedly entertaining music from Saint-Saëns, and an atmospheric mountain climb from Mussorgsky. The concert is complete with the virtuosic and lyrical concerto for violin and viola by Alexey Shor, our Composer-in-Residence, highlighting the instruments’ poetic qualities while seamlessly blending their technical brilliance and emotional depth.

Celebrated Canadian conductor Jean-Marie Zeitouni makes his debut with TŌN in an all-French program. The evening begins with Saint-Saëns’ exuberant Bacchanale from his opera Samson et Dalila. Then mezzo-soprano Megan Moore, a co-founder of the Lynx Project who has performed with the Metropolitan Opera, joins us for Berlioz’s tenderly expressive song cycle The Summer Nights. The program also includes Fauré’s evocative suite of incidental music for the play Pelléas et Mélisande, and d’Indy’s soaring and lyrical Symphony on a French Mountain Air, featuring Bard College Conservatory faculty pianist Ryan MacEvoy McCullough.
