This collection of Baroque Christmas concertos brings together touching pages, at times rustic, naïve or spiritual. These works have been grouped together on an album that has been a huge success ever since, and has even prompted a reissue. A great lover of Christmas traditions, Bernard Labadie revisits these beautiful Baroque pages, with the precision of a goldsmith and the candor of a child.

For Christmas Eve

Palais Montcalm

A celebration of Venetian music, the centerpiece of this performance is a suite of dance music from Andrè Campra’s ground-breaking 1699 Venetian opera-ballet Le Carnaval de Venise. A soulful concerto by Verona and Bologna-based composer Giuseppe Torelli and a brilliant concerto for strings by Vivaldi rounds out the program.

The Masterwork - Christmas Concert with festive concerts of Italian composers and works of Austrian and Spanish masters

Soon It Will Be Christmas

Kölner Philharmonie

The festive concertos by the Italians Locatelli, Manfredini and Torelli, along with Albinoni's tender Adagio, are an integral part of the Christmas season not only in Italy. In Austria, too, the high holidays in the Christian calendar were a busy time. Michael Haydn left behind more than thirty masses, including the Missa Sancti Aloysii composed in 1777 for his "dear choirboys" from the Salzburg Kapellhaus for the memorial day of the Holy Innocents on December 28th, as well as his last completed work, the Missa Sancti Leopoldi. The motet by the Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria and the a cappella choir "The Angels and the Shepherds" by the Hungarian Zóltan Kodaly round off the program. "Developing one's own sound world and being able to express emotions in sounds" has been an important concern of the cellist Manuel Fischer-Dieskau for several years. The title of his new composition "He who sits on the throne laughs" comes from the 2nd Psalm and for him builds "a mental/visual bridge to the ever-laughing Franz Xaver Ohnesorg", to whom he dedicates this composition in loving memory.

Fans of Baroque music need look no further — join us for a concert that showcases SPCO members both as soloists and as stellar chamber musicians! Following Arcangelo Corelli’s titular Concerto Grosso, a full-bodied work that is both mournful and energetic, SPCO trumpeter Lynn Erickson will play a dazzling Baroque concerto. Works by Georg Philipp Telemann and Antonio Vivaldi provide unique instrumentations that highlight the musical diversity of the SPCO, while Philip Glass’ Echorus for Two Violins and Strings brings a minimalist sensibility — an ethereal heartbeat through the light pulse of SPCO musicians in unison.

During the Baroque period, composers explored new ways of writing for wind instruments, affording wind players an equal place with string players at the musical table. With wind soloists in every work, this program illuminates a golden musical era from a sonically refreshing and delightful perspective.

In the Baroque sensibility, death was not something to fear but rather a peaceful homecoming, and no composer understood that better than Bach. The program culminates in his beloved cantata Ich habe genug, a deeply consoling meditation on death that unfolds like a lullaby. Countertenor Tai Oney returns to PBO, bringing a warm, mellow sound that pairs naturally with the oboe, an instrument Bach uses like an echo or guiding spirit alongside the singer. Works by Telemann, Scarlatti, Torelli, and Pergolesi build steadily toward this destination, including Telemann’s Oboe Concerto in C Minor, a dramatic spotlight for the instrument.
