Festival Napa Valley closes its 16th Season with a concert featuring two beloved masterworks: Copland’s quintessentially American ballet score Rodeo and Rimsky-Korsakov’s evocative orchestral suite Scheherazade, sharing the bill with Blue Fire, a symphonic poem flavored with hints of Irish and Latin American popular music, by the late great American composer Daniel Brewbaker.  Michelle Di Russo, recipient of the 2022 Joel Revzen Conducting Fellowship, leads Festival Orchestra Napa.

Festival Napa Valley opens its 16th season with a concert celebrating the sounds of America. Conductor Carlo Ponti kicks off the festivities leading Festival Orchestra Napa in Leonard Bernstein’s exuberant Candide Overture. Festival favorite Sophia Bacelar performs movements from American composer Daniel Brewbaker’s sublime cello concerto La Serenissima. The program concludes with Dvořák’s lush and soul-stirring Symphony No. 9 “From the New World”, one of the most treasured orchestral works of all time, written while he lived in America in the 1890s.

A celebration of the concerto form, this program unusually presents three very different concertos on one program! Through these specific works, composers make broader human connections beyond the concert space.

Gershwin famously folded jazz — exploding in popularity at the time — into the orchestra with the piano at center.

Brewbaker took inspiration from 12th century poet Sufi, asking: Is the violinist playing the violin or the violin playing the violinist?
