A tireless researcher into early music, he interprets and performs the repertory both as a gambist and a conductor. This program, featuring his acclaimed ensemble Hespèrion XXI, captures the inventiveness of the early Baroque era, including works by Frescobaldi, Kapsberger, de’ Cavalieri, Falconiero and more. As the critic Allan Kozinn wrote in The New York Times, Savall’s vast concert and recording career can be described as “not simply a matter of revival, but of imaginative reanimation.”

Appearing in different ways, dreams, visions, and fantasies all materialize as illusions of the mind. Sometimes delightful, and sometimes disturbing, these illusions provide insight into inner desires and provide composers license to flaunt musical conventions and compose with inventive forms and ideas. This concert will feature music full of mind-bending forms, dreamy sound worlds, and fantastic texts. Giles Farnaby’s “Dreame” perceives what the composer views in his sleep. Henry Purcell’s “Blessed Virgin’s Expostulations” demands the return of the angel Gabriel, first seen as a vision by Mary in her early years.

There are a thousand ways to write love and a thousand ways to live it. French-Italian mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre and renowned lutenist Thomas Dunford remind us of this by bringing together these works dedicated to love by Italian composers of the 17th century. The dialogue among pieces by Monteverdi, Merula, Kapsberger, and Frescobaldi highlights the richness and complexity of the sentiment. If love songs today have other finery, Lettera amorosa sighs that the motives and messages remain similar.

Vocalist Lea Desandre is a major rising star, and “one of today’s most exciting voices in early-music performance” (The New York Times). For this special recital, she teams up with lutenist Thomas Dunford, hailed as the “Eric Clapton of the lute” (BBC Magazine). Carnegie Hall audiences will recognize them both from a breathtaking 2022 performance with the Jupiter ensemble. The chance to witness their debut duo recital in our most intimate venue is not to be missed.

Two of the University’s large ensembles present shared concerts.  The fall program will include Golden Jubilee by Alfred Reed, Confluence by Richard Saucedo, Where Never Lark or Eagle Flew by James Curnow, Sondheim! arranged by Stephen Bulla, Toccata by Girolamo Frescobaldi and Variations on a Theme by Josef Haydn by Johannes Brahms.

AMOC closes out the 2022 Festival with a culminating concert focused on pieces that showcase the company’s full ensemble, including Julius Eastman’s indomitable Stay On It and Anthony Roth Costanzo singing his trademark renditions of the music of Philip Glass. AMOC’s dancers make a Libbey Bowl cameo in a choreographed rendition of Schubert’s “Ständchen.” The program also features Costanzo and the early-music ensemble Ruckus in a vibrant array of Baroque music, ranging from Vivaldian virtuoso fireworks to a rarely-performed gem by Sigismondo d’India.
