As the servant Leporello famously sings in his “Catalogue aria,” the eponymous fiend in Mozart’s sublime tragicomedy Don Giovanni has already been very busy when he beds the engaged Anna and then kills her father in a duel. Even as he’s pursued by aggrieved parties on all sides, Don Giovanni sets about seducing the lovely Zerlina—on her wedding day. But the arrogant Spanish antihero everyone loves to hate meets his comeuppance, and in director Kasper Holten’s brilliant production, his descent into hell is not literal but mental, as depicted by Luke Halls’s incredible projections onto Es Devlin’s magically minimalist set.

Mozart’s Don Giovanni, regarded by many as one of the greatest operas of all time, tells the centuries-old story of the libertine Don Juan.

Don Giovanni tries to seduce Donna Anna, which goes awry and he ends up killing her father, the Commendatore, unbeknownst to her. Donna Anna asks her fiancé, Don Ottavio, to avenge her father’s death. The opera follows Don Giovanni’s salacious escapades, aided and abetted by his servant Leporello. Giovanni makes his rounds seducing and duping numerous characters, bragging along the way and escaping accountability by obscuring his identity. In a cemetery, Giovanni meets the Commendatore’s statue, who forebodingly warns him that he will laugh no longer. When offered the chance to change his ways, will Don Giovanni repent?

Reflections on a legendary story. The 1720 Red Mendelssohn Stradivarius violin is said to be one of the world’s most legendary instruments. Its mysterious history and whereabouts after it went missing for 200 years, has inspired much speculation, and many tellings of its story, including the 1998, Academy Award winning film, The Red Violin. And the story of how it came into the hands of its current owner? It’s just as fascinating. Join us for a performance by world-renowned violin virtuoso, and longtime keeper of The Red Violin, Elizabeth Pitcairn, who, along with her legendary instrument, will lead the ASO Chamber Ensemble in performing captivating arrangements from the now famous movie. This concert will double both as the Season 39 finale, as well as the premiere for ASO’s first-ever international debut, a 10-day concert tour of Poland, where the Symphony will travel with Pitcairn and her Red Violin, performing at some of the country’s most prestigious concert halls and music festivals.

Experience the genius of Mozart through the hands of Maxim Emelyanychev in the 2023/2024 season at Berwaldhallen. The Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkester (Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra) is proud to present its principal guest conductor designate, Maxim Emelyanychev, in a special performance that promises to be a highlight of the musical year. Emelyanychev, not only a celebrated conductor but also a renowned soloist, will introduce himself to the Berwaldhallen audience by taking on the dual role of conductor and soloist in Mozart’s bright and jovial 23rd piano concerto. This performance is unique as Emelyanychev will lead from a hammer grand piano, an instrument typical of Mozart’s period, offering a historically informed and authentic sound.

The concert will take place on May 4, marking a significant event where Emelyanychev's expertise in early music and his interpretative finesse will be on full display. Following the intermission, the audience will be treated to Rimsky-Korsakov’s colorful fairy tale suite, Sheherazade, with Emelyanychev taking the podium to lead the orchestra in this evocative and dynamic composition.

The opera was written by the composer two months before he died. The libretto, based on biography of the Roman emperor Titus, shows the dilemmas of the ruler - an internal tear between the duty resulting from the function performed and personal beliefs and feelings.

The performance was prepared by Maja Kleczewska, an appreciated and award-winning theater director who in her stagings is not afraid to pose difficult, and sometimes uncomfortable, questions about the present.

Under the direction of HSO Assistant Conductor, Adam Kerry Boyles, we welcome pianist and UCONN professor, Angelina Gadeliya, performing fellow UCONN Professor and Grammy® Award winner, Kenneth Fuchs’s Piano Concerto, “Spiritualist”-a piece inspired by three paintings of Helen Frankenthaler. His first numbered symphony, Prokofiev chose to compose his Classical Symphony without the aid of the piano and each movement is brief and to the point in the true “Classical” style. Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro includes some of the most famous and hummable tunes in classical music and created a revival in the city of Prague for the composer.  It was there, in Prague, that his dramatic Symphony No. 38 was premiered, and it was considered a gift to the city.

Three Spirituals by American composer Adolphus Hailstork takes traditional tunes and treats them with Baroque counterpoint technique and jazz harmonies. Hungarian Ernst von Dohnanyi’s Serenade is perhaps his most frequently performed work, inspired by a Beethoven trio, Beethoven, in turn, was inspired to write for a string trio by Mozart’s “Divertimento.” Some musicians (including the violist in this performance) think the Mozart Divertimento is the best piece ever written for a string trio. Richard Goode, a Grammy award-winning American pianist acknowledged worldwide as one of today’s leading interpreters of classical music, joins the SPCO to perform and conduct two of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s renowned piano concertos, Nos. 18 and 23. Frequent SPCO collaborator Chia-Hsuan Lin will conduct the high-energy world premiere of Līlā written by Korean American composer Texu Kim — a new work for chamber orchestra inspired by Korean shamanistic dance traditions.

Music Director Jaap van Zweden conducts Mozart’s timeless Requiem, a work of great poignance and emotional depth.
