Two musical Dames at the very tops of their respective professions – Dame Sarah Connolly received The King’s Medal for Music in 2023, whilst Dame Imogen Cooper received the late Queen’s Medal for Music in 2019 – once again join together in recital as they previously have to considerable acclaim at such venues as the Cheltenham Festival and the Oxford International Song Festival. ‘The warm relationship between both performers came across in their performance and the audience was delighted’, wrote the Henley Standard. The programme includes songs both familiar and unfamiliar , including Loewe’s setting of texts better known from Schumann and examples by the neglected Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck.

The second concert of our Mozart celebration captures a composer on the move. We meet Mozart as an eight-year-old, dashing off his First Symphony in London. Then he’s in Italy, writing the fun-loving opera Mitridate, rè di Ponto. A stop in France for the fizzing “Paris” Symphony leads us to his later home in Vienna, where he wrote the Piano Concerto No. 20, performed with intensity here by Behzod Abduraimov.

Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki is the soloist in Mozart’s mysterious and stormy Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor which owes much to the composer’s sensitivity to operatic drama and expressivity. This concerto was particularly admired by artists of the Romantic era. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky said of his poignant Symphony No. 6, Pathétique, “I love it as I have never loved any of my musical children.” It was his last completed work; he led the premiere less than two weeks before his death

Cypresses is the name of a collection of poems by Gustav Pfleger Moravský, 18 of which Dvořák set as songs in 1865; 22 years later he selected 12 of them to arrange for string quartet.

This masterful opera, set in the opulent castle of Count Almaviva, delves into the intricate dynamics of human relationships. The plot revolves around the clever servants, Figaro and Susanna, who scheme to outwit their capricious employer, with the support of the Count's long-suffering wife, the Countess. Adding to the intrigue is Cherubino, opera's most endearing pageboy. This production, directed by the renowned Barbara Gaines, promises an exhilarating experience, enhanced by the dynamic conducting of Erina Yashima in her Lyric debut. Our celebration of Mozart begins at the very end. The circumstances surrounding Mozart’s unfinished Requiem are shrouded in mystery, but the music’s sorrow and beauty speak across the centuries. The Adagio and Fugue, another late work, is a dark and almost mystical vision. Acclaimed bass-baritone Dashon Burton returns to the SLSO in Detlev Glanert's arrangement of Brahms’ final song cycle, the Four Serious Songs.

Bernard Labadie marks his first performances with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in this program of life-affirming energy, grandeur and strength with works by three giants of Western classical music, all written in the influential last decade of the 18th century. A pair of glorious and masterful operatic overtures open each half of the program, both written by Mozart within weeks of one another in the fall of 1791, and just a couple of months before his untimely death. Beethoven’s first piano concerto is performed by Jonathan Biss (“one of today's foremost Beethoven exponents” – Chicago Tribune), and the program closes with Haydn’s Symphony No. 103 – his second to last – nicknamed the “Drum Roll” for its powerful and mysterious opening.

When night falls, so too does silence – and that’s when music can weave its darkest spells. In the middle of the 20th century, composers Benjamin Britten and Witold Lutosławski were kindred creative spirits, and each crafted ravishing, dream-haunted tapestries of song for a handful of instruments and the tenor voice of Peter Pears. One of Britain’s greatest living tenors, Mark Padmore, assumes his mantle today, at the dark heart of this typically imaginative programme from Ryan Wigglesworth. Mozart opens the evening in a blaze of sunlight, and Schumann’s most personal symphony brings it to a close: strong emotions, spoken with love.

Our second Classics concert partners with the Paderewski Festival in Paso Robles to bring famed Polish-Canadian pianist, Janina Fialkowska, to San Luis Obispo, to perform Paderewski’s Piano Concerto in A minor.  A work inspired by the concertos of contemporaries – Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich – the second movement, is a beautiful song to life. Mozart’s Overture to the Magic Flute begins this concert, with the famed opening three chords signifying Sarastro banging on the door. We celebrate the 100th anniversary year of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition with the famous orchestrated version by Maurice Ravel.  This work has come to symbolize the great Russian tradition as well as Ravel’s expert orchestration. From the opening Promenade music heard on the trumpet to the bold brass theme that opens the final movement the Great Gate of Kiev.  A work of multiple components with walking or “promenade” music in between nine fully executed movements, as the composer takes us on a musical journey of great art. We will also feature a world premiere from local composer Stefan Podell.

Experience the captivating artistry of the New Jersey Symphony as they present an enchanting program under the baton of the esteemed conductor Xian Zhang. The evening opens with Gabriela Ortiz's "Kauyumari," a piece inspired by an ancient rite from Mexico, which begins with a delicate whisper and crescendos into a vibrant, joyous dance. Following this, the audience will be treated to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 17, a work that showcases Mozart at his most radiant. Pianist Inon Barnatan brings this elegant composition to life with his profound musicianship, transforming each note into pure poetry.

The highlight of the evening is Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade," a symphonic suite that vividly brings to life the tales of the legendary storyteller. Through the voice of the solo violin, the heroine Scheherazade narrates a series of adventurous stories, beginning with the thrilling journey aboard Sinbad's storm-tossed ship. This performance promises to be a mesmerizing blend of narrative and musical brilliance, capturing the imagination and transporting the audience to a world of wonder and excitement.
