Joining BSO Assistant Conductor Anna Handler in her Symphony Hall debut with the BSO is concertmaster Nathan Cole making his Symphony Hall debut as a concerto soloist. Principal Viola Steven Ansell is Cole’s solo partner in Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante, a vivacious masterpiece. American composer Gabriella Smith’s Bioluminescence Chaconne uses the natural world as a metaphor for musical structure and process, or vice versa — part of a multi-season programmatic focus exploring artists’ responses to our environment. Tchaikovsky’s iconic ballet score Swan Lake, for all its supernatural, fairytale narrative, is also very much in the realm of nature pieces. Dutch conductor Jaap van Zweden and American pianist Emanuel Ax return to the San Francisco Symphony for a stellar program featuring two Austrian giants. The passionate, far-reaching C-major Piano Concerto, K.503 is now recognized as one of Mozart’s finest—and most difficult—works in the genre. Olivier Messiaen called the brief third theme of the third movement the most beautiful sequence of bars that Mozart ever wrote. It wasn’t until his Seventh Symphony that Bruckner, age 60, enjoyed any popular success as a composer. The Seventh Symphony features a contrabass tuba and, for the first time outside The Ring cycle, four Wagner tubas. It’s a fitting tribute to Wagner, whom Bruckner memorialized in the symphony’s elegiac coda—calling it “funeral music for the Master.”

In its program, the Amatis Trio follows in the footsteps of Voltaire's Candide, who discovers the complexity of human existence on his travels. Mozart's K. 502 reflects the initial lightness of the literary masterpiece, while subtle harmonic shifts already hint at deeper complexities beneath the surface. The blend of struggle and spiritual triumph in Mendelssohn's Second Piano Trio seems like a metaphor for Candide's path to resilience and enlightenment. Liszt's Tristia, in turn, moves the listener to reflect on their own search for fulfillment in an imperfect world.

Marielle Murphy, a native of Carmel, California, is establishing an exciting career as coloratura soprano on opera and concert stages in the United States and Europe, in traditional as well as highly innovative productions. She made her European debut at the Salzburg Festival in Massenet’s Thaïs with Plàcido Domingo and the Munich Radio Orchestra, and numerous engagements in European opera houses quickly followed. Marielle made her debut at New York's Metropolitan Opera in the 2023/24 season as Oscar in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera and returned to the Met in the 2024/25 season in Richard Strauss’ Die Frau ohne Schatten. For several years she has been based in Münster, Germany, where she is a leading soloist in the opera ensemble of the Theater Münster.

Marielle is accompanied by pianist Alden Gatt, assistant conductor of the Frankfurt Opera and performer at major venues around the world.

This was also the case for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart when he reunited with four friends from Mannheim in Paris in 1778. And there is a big mystery to solve: Who were these musical friends? Did Mozart really write this composition? In the end, it all comes down to simply enjoying good music. Bach's Third Brandenburg Concerto is full of charm and virtuosic lightness. Fast, playful rhythms and tension-filled exchanges between the strings and the continuo ensure pure listening pleasure. With a Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat major, also known as the "Jeunehomme Concerto," Mozart demonstrates his genius in handling the piano as a solo instrument: The first movement begins with a powerful dialogue between the orchestra and the soloist, setting the tone for the entire concerto. Particularly in the second movement, Mozart's ability to lead melodies is evident, while the finale creates a lively and spirited atmosphere. In addition to these highlights of the Baroque and Classical periods, the premiere of a short piece by the sixteen-year-old Georgian composer Tsotne Zedginidze will be performed in this concert by the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, with Zedginidze also appearing as a soloist on the piano.

Three composers and one female composer each explore in their own way the play of contrasts, reflections, and flashes. Sophie Gail, one of the rare female composers of her time, opens the concert with the overture to The Two Jealous , a lively and theatrical work, in the spirit of the comic operas of his time. Étienne-Nicolas Méhul achieved great success with the comic opera Stratonice , oscillating between gravity and lyricism. Then, Beethoven, whose Romance for Violin and Orchestra No. 2 exudes a gentle melancholy, suspends time before deploying his creative energy in the overture to The Creatures of Prometheus . As for Mozart, he breathes into this concert the sparkling youth of his Symphony No. 29 , all lightness and clarity.

Enjoy the sophistication and charm of Mozart’s Symphony No. 38. One of Mozart’s final orchestral masterpieces, this symphony opens with a dramatic slow introduction before bursting into a spirited main theme— one that foreshadows the beloved Overture to The Magic Flute. The middle movement offers a moment of deep beauty and reflection, leading to a lively finale.

Continuing our Mozart Festival, enjoy works by two peers: Joseph Bologne’s jaunty Symphony No. 2 and Maria Theresia von Paradis’s Overture to The School Candidate, her sole surviving orchestral piece, in commedia dell’arte form. Mozart’s five violin concertos, composed in 1775, culminate in a Fifth that is imaginative and technically challenging. The fiery “Haffner” Symphony, honoring a former Salzburg patron, is bold and regal.

Mozart and Korngold are separated by a century and a half, but both fascinated the musical world as prodigies in their time. In his "Sinfonia concertante," Mozart features four wind instruments - oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon - playing together and against each other. This sonic diversity creates exciting dialogues between the instruments, as they compete with each other but also harmonize perfectly. The solo parts are performed by wind players from the Dresden Philharmonic. The second work of the evening, Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Symphony in F sharp major, takes us into a completely different world. Korngold, known for his film compositions, creates opulent soundscapes in this symphony, filled with passion and drama. The symphony is full of energy, profound emotions, and a captivating blend of classical musical language and the grand cinematic elements that characterize the composer. The concert is conducted by Eun Sun Kim, known for her precise and passionate conducting, making her debut on the podium of our orchestra.
