The common prejudice that Haydn and Mozart had little sympathy for the transverse flute is amply refuted by their music. It is true, however, that the flute was considered an instrument for domestic use and the corresponding literature was rather modest. Haydn's and Mozart's flute quartets, on the other hand, despite all their melodic charm, always meet the requirements of sophisticated chamber music. Mozart wrote his C major work on behalf of a Dutch doctor in Mannheim, while Haydn's D major quartet was probably written for the Esterházy court. The concert is rounded off with two colorful chamber music works from the beginning of the 20th century: a flute quartet by the Swiss Volkmar Andreae and the first movement of the string trio by the French composer Jean Cras.

After the opening with the overture to Mozart's opera "Don Giovanni", a work by Nuno Côrte-Real, born in 1971, will have its German premiere in the Berlin Philharmonie: the "Sinfonia 2022", which will also be recorded on CD on this occasion. The composer, who comes from Portugal, will be conducting himself. For the second part of the concert, he chose Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 1 in C minor, which took the composer a long time to get started with. Plagued by self-doubt, Brahms had slowly approached the composition of a first symphony through serenades, chamber music and choral works.

With "The Marriage of Figaro", Mozart opened his trio of legendary master operas, all of which the composer wrote based on librettos by the Italian Lorenzo Da Ponte. Of all Mozart's piano concertos, Emanuel Ax particularly appreciates the majestic C major concerto KV 503: "This piece has a certain grandeur about it. It is simply so wonderful, so expansive, so big, and the slow movement is pure magic." KV 503 is the crowning conclusion of a series of twelve piano concertos that Mozart wrote between 1784 and 1786 for his performances in the "Clavierland" of Vienna. Dmitri Shostakovich composed his 8th Symphony in the summer of 1943, a few months after the bitter battle of Stalingrad, which marked the turning point in the war through unspeakable human suffering. Shostakovich himself described his 8th Symphony as a requiem, as music that speaks of individual suffering. Others saw it as a message about the fear-filled lives of artists and intellectuals under the Stalinist dictatorship. Despite the gloomy themes, moments of hope and humanity permeate the symphony. With this emotionally gripping symphony, Slovakian conductor Juraj Valčuha opens a series of concerts that the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra is dedicating to the 80th anniversary of the liberation.

Defeat? Triumph! In 2006 he was our guest for the first time and delivered a non plus ultra interpretation of Tchaikovsky's 3rd Symphony. Unforgettable! In 2008 he came back and conducted Respighi's Fontane di Roma in a congenial manner . Impressive! Now he is coming again: Alan Buribayev, the master of the baton from Kazakhstan, former GMD in Meiningen, former head of the Het Brabants Orkest and now head of the Astana Opera in his homeland. This time he will conduct the overture to the Aeschylus opera L'Oresteia by Tchaikovsky's contemporary Sergei Taneyev and a Mozart concerto alongside the young Dutch violinist Hawijch Elders, who won 1st prize and three special prizes at the Henri Marteau International Violin Competition in 2023. Finally, Tchaikovsky's "Fifth" will be performed. Like the Beethoven symphony with the same number, it is a kind of "symphony of fate" that overwhelmingly presents the "Per Aspera Ad Astra", the dramaturgy of "Through Night to Light". Defeat? Two symphonies that made history: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his Prague Symphony before travelling to Prague, where it was premiered in 1787. Conductor Petr Popelka comes from Prague himself and is enchanted by the beauty of this music. Gustav Mahler's Fourth Symphony with its setting of the poem Der Himmel hängt voller Geigen and a musical resurrection of the dead is also gripping. Soprano Julia Kleiter will perform this work together with the Wiener Symphoniker, which Gustav Mahler himself considered to be one of his most powerful works.

If there’s anyone who embodies the liveliness and ebullient joy of 18th-century music, it’s Nicholas McGegan, “one of the finest baroque conductors of his generation” (London Independent). Having conducted The Four Seasons countless times, McGegan says it never fails to captivate listeners with its familiar scenes set to ear-catching melodies: “It’s great to hear [Vivaldi] imitate bird songs or rivers or fountains or the summer bugs—they’re still with us—and the stomping of feet and skating are things that people still do. He had a wonderful way of turning these things into music, and memorable music at that.”

Last season, the Chinese-born New Zealand conductor Tianyi Lu made her debut in Duisburg and caused a huge sensation with a passionate performance. Now she is returning to the orchestra - with one of the most mysterious works in music history: the Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. There are countless legends about this requiem, which the composer was unable to complete himself. He died while working on it and left behind fragments for posterity that led to all kinds of speculation. Because most of the movements of the Requiem hardly progressed beyond sketches, the mythical history of composition is followed by an equally adventurous series of attempts to complete the torso to form a "complete" work. Tianyi Lu has opted for the established version by Franz Xaver Süßmayr, to whom Mozart himself says he personally gave instructions for the elaboration. But regardless of the question of how much “real” Mozart is in the Requiem, it is a masterful work – with the spectacular use of the trombones in the “Dies irae” and the powerful use of the choir. Here it is brilliantly sung by the Duisburg Philharmonic Choir, with whom the orchestra traditionally maintains a close working relationship.

For nearly 40 years, Carnegie Hall audiences have filled Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage to hear the grand dame of the violin, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and her brilliant recital partner, pianist Lambert Orkis. Following their 2019 recital, critics described this duo as “timeless ... one of the great recital teams,” calling Mutter’s enduring greatness across generations “a privilege to witness” (New York Classical Review). In this concert, they perform a spectacular selection of violin-and-piano repertoire that spans nearly 150 years from the 18th to 20th centuries.

The musical relationship between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Nepomuk Hummel can be described as a kind of musical brotherhood, even though there was an age difference of around 22 years between the two. Mutual admiration and appreciation characterized the relationship, for Mozart recognized early on the extraordinary talent of the 8-year-old Hummel. Mozart became aware of his future pupil through his father, who was employed as conductor at the “Theater auf der Wieden” under Emanuel Schikaneder. Mozart took the boy into his Viennese apartment and taught him for two years. Afterwards, Hummel senior took the boy on extensive concert tours - exactly following Leopold Mozart's example. Hummel was celebrated especially in London and was looked after by Franz Joseph Haydn. Five years with numerous performances and lessons were to pass before Hummel settled back in Vienna. By this time, however, Mozart had already died. Hummel temporarily benefited from the knowledge of Johann Georg Albrechtsberger; He then perfected his craft under Mozart's antipode Antonio Salieri, the legendary grandmaster of late Baroque Italian opera. In the second half of his life, Salieri concentrated on teaching work in particular - his students included Ludwig van Beethoven, Carl Czerny and Franz Liszt. With his more than 40 operas, Salieri, who came from the province of Veneto, was one of the most successful composers of his generation. The dramma per musica "Armida", the tragédie lyrique "Les Danaïdes", the dramma giocoso "La scuola de' gelosi" and the commedia per musica "La fiera di Venezia" are still well known today. The latter in particular impresses with its charming Venetian local colour, which Salieri illustrates with extremely effective music on stage, as can be heard in the rousing overture. Even during his time in Vienna as imperial chamber composer and court conductor, he always remained connected to his Venetian homeland. In 1778/79, Salieri composed a symphony that his publisher gave the nickname "Veneziana" - named after the city in which some of the music was premiered. Salieri took some of the harmonies from his overtures to "La scuola de' gelosi" and "La partenza inaspettata". Both operas were written during the three years that Salieri spent in Rome, Venice and Milan. The complete reconstruction of this chamber symphony only took place in Vienna in the 1980s; because the parts were stored there in the archives of the Society of Friends of Music – on the original cover one could read: “Sinfonia n. XIX del Signor Antonio Salieri – Maestro di musica all'attual servizio de SM l'Augustissimo Imperatore – Eseguita in Venezia.”

The Bochum Symphony Orchestra commissions two or three compositions each year. This season, one of them is "Il Cenacolo" by the Bochum composer   Stefan Heucke . Heucke, with whom the orchestra has worked on and off for many years, was inspired to create this work by looking at Leonardo da Vinci's "Last Supper": "The great unity of the mural at first glance (almost everyone has the painting in their mind's eye in large) made me spontaneously think of the solo cello and 12 violins - a sonically extremely homogeneous line-up that, however, allows for the possibility of multi-coloured differentiation in detail."

Returning opera to its origins, where human drama is the focus, where passion, strokes of fate and deep feelings are the focus, where music and words can respect each other as equal arts: these were the aims of an opera reform to which Gluck was committed. "Alceste" is a particularly impressive example, because with it Gluck succeeds in making the overture a part of the opera itself by preparing the audience for everything that is to come. From the particularly tragic key of D minor, from the countless sighing motifs, the constant downward movement and the painful dissonances, even the most hardened audience knows that something tragic is about to happen. Thankfully, the opera ends with a happy ending.
