There is loving and dreaming, cheating and trusting. Suicides are prevented, tests passed, adventures survived. Who is right? Who has been wronged? The world of the magic flute is opaque, and everyone is looking for a pathway: within it, into it or out of it. Who holds the reigns? Who can be trusted? Could it be music?

This concert brings together two masterpieces that were both composed in 1786. Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 86 in D major is one of the six symphonies that the composer was commissioned to write by a Parisian concert organiser. According to musicologist H. C. Robbins Landon, the 86th Symphony, with its unusually free slow movement, is one of Haydn’s best works. Mozart’s Prague Symphony, written in the same year, is another pinnacle of the classical period. It is remarkably innovative, particularly in the composer’s jettisoning of the traditional minuet movement. The symphony also shares many features with the opera »The Marriage of Figaro«, which was composed at the same time.

Chamber concerts are very popular with our orchestra musicians, allowing them to showcase new flavours and put individual instruments in the spotlight. Now, there is a wonderful rendezvous with the horn – about which the »Ideen zu einer Ästhetik der Tonkunst« (»Ideas on the Aesthetics of Music«) as early as 1784 stated that it was »humanly conceived as a sensitive soul for almost all societies«. Many composers were inspired by the instrument with its snail shape and distinctive sound to create music – including Mozart, whose horn pieces were all written for the virtuoso Joseph Leutgeb. He first played in the Salzburg court orchestra, but soon moved back to his hometown of Vienna. Due to his somewhat simple-minded character, however, he was often the target of Mozart’s witty remarks, who sometimes notated the pieces he wrote for him in different colours or added mocking remarks to the score. One result of this humorous friendship was the horn quintet from 1782, a work with lots of inventive humour and thematic imagination. The second composition was written by Brahms, who once disparaged the horn as a »brass viola« – yet he probably only meant this tongue-in-cheek, as it was his favourite instrument, especially in his youth. This may be why he wrote the poignant horn trio in 1865 as a mourning piece, shortly after his mother's death. It is characterised by a romantic sense of nature and hunting scenes, but also by mournful lamentations. His close friend Clara Schumann raved about the »extremely interesting work« with its opening movement, which is »very rich in engaging melodies«, its »beautiful« Adagio and its finale, which »is full of life«.

Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka is a vibrant symphony in three movements based on a ballet that tells the captivating tale of a tragic yet endearing puppet. Brought to life by a magician, Petrushka is burdened by human emotions and falls in love with a beautiful ballerina doll. This love is not reciprocated, and Petrushka is confronted with jealousy and rage, ultimately leading to his demise. Laden with Russian folk tunes and bursting with charisma, the orchestration of Petrushka effortlessly captures the puppet’s folly and the carnival in which the story takes place.

The Nutcracker and Other Holiday Favorites

The question of the authenticity of Mozart's Sinfonia concertante for wind instruments has been discussed for decades without any convincing result. This plays no role for either the audience or the four soloists from the ranks of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra - either way, the Sinfonia concertante is a masterpiece of wind literature. With the tender, lyrical "Siegfried Idyll", Richard Wagner gave his young wife Cosima a personal birthday present. Opera lovers will recognize leitmotifs from Wagner's music drama "Siegfried". Nathalie Stutzmann also presents a rarity: "Lachrimae antiquae" comes from a collection of lamentations by the Renaissance composer John Dowland. Robert Schumann did not look back all the way to the Renaissance, but at least to the Baroque period when composing his 2nd Symphony. His intensive engagement with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach was reflected in the work.

Bampton Classical Opera presents its annual St Beornwald concert, an eclectic programme of music based around two majestic works by Mozart and Poulenc for piano and wind, played by artistic director Jeremy Gray and the wind instruments of the Orchestra of Bampton Classical Opera.

Mozart’s beautiful quintet, for an unusual scoring, was considered by the composer at the time to be ‘the best thing I have written in my life’.  Poulenc’s trio, his first major chamber work, is noted for its depth of feeling, with touches of Mozartian flavour and echoes of other composers’ styles yet retaining its youthful verve.

On the eve of their 20th anniversary, the string, wind and piano players of much-loved Ensemble 360 return to Portsmouth. Their programme includes captivating charm and wit in George Onslow’s Nonet. This is a chance to hear one of the finest and largest-scale chamber works by the composer, nicknamed the ‘French Beethoven’, whose five movements move through an expressive array of moods from turbulence to a jubilant conclusion.

Unbelievable, but true: When Haydn was conducting in London in 1795, the huge chandelier fell into the hall - but nobody was hurt because the audience had streamed to the front to see Haydn up close. A miracle to which the London Symphony No. 96 owes its nickname The Miracle . London? Prague! Dvorák's most beautiful symphony, next to From the New World, had its premiere there in 1890 - the "Eighth" with the irresistible Bohemian-sounding waltz as the third movement. The vocal concert highlight of the evening was two Mozart hits: the festive coloratura motet Exsultate, jubilate and the melancholy, dreamy aria Vado, ma dove? , in which the music nestles up to the words as if caressingly. Ania Vegry, a London-born soprano who was formerly part of the ensemble of the Hannover State Opera and since 2020 part of the Anhaltinisches Theater Dessau, joins us once again. She is a celebrated guest in concert halls and opera houses everywhere.

Based in New York, the Escher nevertheless has strong UK connections as a former BBC Radio 3 New Generation ensemble, as regular Wigmore performers and as visitors to the BBC Proms at Cadogan Hall. Two standard pieces form the programme: one of Mozart’s works (1789) originally commissioned by the King of Prussia, and Dvořák’s final quartet (1895).

December’s drawing in on Merseyside, but here at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall it’s summer all over again! Mendelssohn’s heart turned somersaults when he arrived in the sunshine of Italy, but today his Italian symphony is just the starting point for a whole afternoon of winter warmers. Karel Deseure conducts Ravel’s dreamy Spanish fantasy, Poulenc’s witty Sinfonietta, and Mozart’s ebullient Oboe Concerto – with the Orchestra’s very own Helena Mackie in the spotlight. Welcome to the mysterious fairy-tale world of the »Magic Flute«! Even the names of the characters sound magical and remind us of our first visits to the opera: Tamino, Pamina, Papageno, Sarastro … Hardly any other work of opera literature includes so many contradictory elements, so harmoniously combined into a coherent entity by Mozart's music . Is his arguably most popular opera an adventure story about growing up? A parable of wisdom, philosophy and friendship? Is it simply about staying true to oneself, like the bird catcher Papageno? He accompanies Prince Tamino, who has fallen in love with a picture of the kidnapped Pamina and plans to free her. We are reminded that the world cannot always be divided into good and evil: the Queen of the Night and Sarastro illustrate this to us through their quarrel over Pamina. On our journey we are also accompanied by three ladies, three boys, a glockenspiel, and a flute that tames even the wildest animals.

Sergei Prokofiev's G minor concerto, the second of his five piano concertos, is classicistic yet experimental. Prokofiev combines the virtuoso, almost athletic gesture, which culminates in a triumphant solo cadenza, with a distinctive melodic component. The Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov represents both - brilliant virtuosity and profound melodic design. In the "Gogol Suite," Alfred Schnittke reveals his inexhaustible sense of musical wit. With the exception of the last movement, which is in darker colors, there is hardly a moment of real seriousness in the incidental music to Gogol's comedy "The Inspector General." Admired for his theatrical and gripping interpretations, the Russian conductor Maxim Emelyanychev is considered one of the most promising conductors of his generation - and a specialist in the works of Mozart. The "Haffner Symphony" was commissioned by the Salzburg merchant Siegmund Haffner for his ceremonial elevation to the nobility. Mozart created the work under great time pressure, which is not evident from the exuberant symphonic fireworks.

At this youth concert, young people get to know the flute in all its facets, because the two works by Frank Martin and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart couldn't be more different. Exciting virtuosity in Martin's ballad meets Mozart's delicate lightness, packaged in the form of a classical solo concerto. With Stathis Karapanos, we were able to get an international star for this concert. The young people sit on the stage at the youth concerts and thus have the opportunity to engage in direct interaction with the musicians.

Fear of death - a bad advisor since time immemorial: King Idomeneo, whose fleet sinks into the waters of Crete shortly before returning home from the Trojan War, swears to the sea god Poseidon that if he survives, he will sacrifice the first human being he meets on the shore. But as fate – or rather the theater – would have it, this is of course his own son Idamante. To make matters worse, he has fallen in love with a Trojan prisoner, Ilia, which infuriates the Greek princess Elettra. Idomeneo, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s perfect "drama for music", is one of a series of Greek war dramas retold according to the taste of the 18th century.

When the 22-year-old Mozart was working on his second flute concerto, the later composer of the "Magic Flute" was not particularly fond of the instrument: "Then I'll be stuffed" (i.e. reluctant), he told his father, "if I have to write for an instrument that I don't like." And so he quickly managed to get his client, Ferdinand Dejean, to arrange his oboe concerto - a sleight of hand that of course does not detract from Mozart's cheerful and energetic music.

The composer Korngold is remembered best for his film scores to silver-screen classics like The Adventures of Robin Hood and Captain Blood, but his concert works are also a testament to his prodigious talent. (He published the Piano Trio when he was only 13.) In this first FWSO Chamber Program, Korngold’s music appears alongside Mozart’s Serenade in C minor and a Divertissement by Schulhoff, whose music was buried by the Nazis but has been reemerging in recent years.

Shostakovich at his most miniature and massive! Almost everyone will recognize the composer’s ubiquitous and haunting waltz that opens the program. The massive Fourth Symphony is not often heard, yet it is one of the composer’s most important works; it was the result of the composer’s first exhilarating contact with the music of Gustav Mahler and is his longest symphony, with the largest orchestra. The Fourth was a new phase in the composer’s development, yet it was withdrawn for nearly 25 years in the face of Stalin’s terrifying intimidation.

Mozart wrote in a letter to his father that death is »the true, best friend of man« – which for Manfred Honeck is a »profound and significant statement«. The internationally sought-after conductor is known for his unmistakable and trend-setting style – and is also a charismatic and passionate artist who loves emotional depth: »If I had the choice between technical precision and emotional music, I would always choose the music.« The former violist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, who once began his conducting career as Claudio Abbado’s assistant, has been a regular guest of ours for more than 30 years. This led to an intimate friendship – and as a result, he is now officially performing his first concert as our new honorary conductor. We are delighted to be performing one of his favourite programmes with him on Eternity Sunday, which is very moving and will certainly give food for thought: The equally »mysterious and divine moments« in Mozart's last work – the otherworldly beautiful requiem from 1791, which the composer worked on until his early death at the age of just 35 and was unable to complete. Manfred Honeck breaks the ritualistic confessional music abruptly at precisely that point after eight bars in the »Lacrimosa« – and complements and combines it in an incredibly comforting way with other poignant sound creations, texts from powerful biblical passages, letters by Mozart, poems, Gregorian chorales and the urging ringing of bells.
