D’Est en Musique presents Chantal Akerman’s semi-fictional travelogue in a musical collaboration with her partner, celebrated cellist Sonia Wieder-Atherton, performed live by Wieder-Atherton and award-winning pianist Sarah Rothenberg. Akerman’s 16mm film, first shown in 1993, was shot in Poland, Ukraine, East Germany, and Russia amidst the unstable period following the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. Observing landscapes and people, the poignant film evokes an uneasy malaise through long, extended shots and looping repetition. Akerman re-edited the film in 2005 and paired it with musical selections by Wieder-Atherton that include masterworks by composers including Béla Bartók, Frédéric Chopin, Leoš Janáček, Bohuslav Martinů, Sergei Prokofiev, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Maurice Ravel, Alfred Schnittke, and Boris Tchaikovsky. Even though our Christmas concert in the Kreuzkirche has become a beloved tradition, it is far from routine: the Christmas customs of the countries we visit musically, the moods and languages ​​of different styles and ensembles are too diverse. This year we're traveling back to Germany's past: Christmas with "Papa Bach" in a small Silesian village or with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Berlin. In the 1820s, there was already a Christmas market there with over 100 stalls, the sensation perhaps being the evening illuminations, which contrasted with the darkness in which much of the city was shrouded at night.

But they probably never dreamed that they would one day share the stage together for an entire tour. Their first musical encounter took place in 2008, when Cecilia Bartoli organized a gala concert with many famous colleagues in honor of the 200th anniversary of the death of the celebrated opera singer Maria Malibran. Lang Lang was there too – and the spark flew immediately! The German composer Franz Wüllner first introduced "Serenade" in 1882. That same year, conductor Richard Strauss showcased the orchestral work in a Dresden performance, attracting the attention of renowned conductor Hans von Bülow, who played a role in advancing Strauss’s career. While “Serenade” has a classical formal structure, its melodic content hints at vibrant themes rich with passion and lyricism, which Strauss explores in his later works.

Two violins, a cello, a piano – no, this is not a classical quartet, but Salut Salon. For more than twenty years, the four virtuoso musicians have treated their audiences worldwide to mind-boggling musical capers – from Vivaldi to vocal acrobatics, from tango to »Tatort«, from rap to Rachmaninov. »Salut Salon is a passion that simply needed an outlet«, says the ensemble’s founder Angelika Bachmann. The current program, »Heimat« (Homeland) takes the typical Salut Salon approach to this multi-faceted notion, collecting music the four musicians have encountered on their travels. The philosopher Nietzsche based his entire thinking on music. When he met the great composer Richard Wagner as a young man, he was overwhelmed – both artistically and intellectually. Wagner befriended him, had him write lyrics that praised Wagner himself, and shaped him into his ideological disciple. But as Nietzsche began to see through his mentor and despise his growing anti-Semitism, the questions grew: Where will this lead? What kind of world will this create?

Best friends Gerda and Kay are inseparable, but when the Snow Queen steals Kay away and threatens to turn his heart into a lump of ice, Gerda sets off on an extraordinary adventure to save her best friend. On her way, she meets lots of magical and mysterious characters, who help her discover her true strength… and your little ones can help her along the way!

Packed with original songs, plenty of audience interaction and bags of festive magic, this energetic and exciting show celebrates the things that make us different and the value of true friendship.

Designed to be welcoming and inclusive for all young audiences, our relaxed production means everyone can enjoy the adventure in their own way – wiggles, giggles and wonder are all very much encouraged.

The Snow Queen 2026

The extensive concert program presents itself with dazzling diversity and a variety of formats. The Zurich Opera Orchestra, in full force, will perform in seven Philharmonic Concerts, alternating between the Opera House and the Tonhalle. Internationally renowned soloists and guest conductors will dedicate themselves to major works from Beethoven to Strauss, as well as fascinating discoveries from the concert repertoire.

With the children's opera "The Thief Lord," the Zurich Opera House is staging a new performance: the former "Sternen" cinema in Zurich-Oerlikon will become the setting for a gripping musical theatre adventure. In Cornelia Funke's novel of the same name, an abandoned cinema also becomes the refuge of a gang of orphans led by Scipio. Brothers Prosper and Bo find shelter here from their aunt and the persistent detective Victor, who is hot on their trail. A mysterious mission puts everyone in danger. The libretto by Swiss playwright Andreas Sauter will be set to music by three composition students from the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).

Lord of Thieves

This special concert project is dedicated to one of the iconic figures of literary history: Ophelia from Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Between self-empowerment and tragic failure, her fate unfolds in a world dominated by patriarchal power. Conductor Raphaël Pichon weaves together music from Ambroise Thomas's "Hamlet," Berlioz's "Tristia, Op. 18," and Fauré's "Requiem" into a compelling musical portrait that illuminates the various facets of Ophelia's character. Alongside soprano Sabine Devieilhe and baritone Huw Montague Rendall, the Zurich Opera Orchestra and Chorus will perform.
