One librettist, one actor, four singers, and ten composers join forces to make opera in a brand-new way. In his first opera libretto, Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning playwright Michael R. Jackson (A Strange Loop) traces the life of a woman named Sue whose personality is split in two. Sue’s life, from the mundane to the extraordinary, unfolds before us, with each decade scored by a different musical luminary. Opera Philadelphia favorites Missy Mazzoli (Breaking the Waves, The Listeners), Rene Orth (10 Days in a Madhouse), and Nico Muhly (Dark Sisters) return alongside a panoply of company debuts from notable composers, like GRAMMY® nominee Nathalie Joachim. Even though our Christmas concert in the Kreuzkirche has become a beloved tradition, it is far from routine: the Christmas customs of the countries we visit musically, the moods and languages ​​of different styles and ensembles are too diverse. This year we're traveling back to Germany's past: Christmas with "Papa Bach" in a small Silesian village or with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Berlin. In the 1820s, there was already a Christmas market there with over 100 stalls, the sensation perhaps being the evening illuminations, which contrasted with the darkness in which much of the city was shrouded at night.

Duet or duel? There's no question that Cecilia Bartoli and Lang Lang are among the greatest virtuosos in their respective fields. But they probably never dreamed that they would one day share the stage together for an entire tour. Their first musical encounter took place in 2008, when Cecilia Bartoli organized a gala concert with many famous colleagues in honor of the 200th anniversary of the death of the celebrated opera singer Maria Malibran. Lang Lang was there too – and the spark flew immediately! The same energy, the same preference for colors and delicate nuances in music, but also the same playful joy in pitting their virtuosity against each other in a humorous duel. The German composer Franz Wüllner first introduced "Serenade" in 1882. That same year, conductor Richard Strauss showcased the orchestral work in a Dresden performance, attracting the attention of renowned conductor Hans von Bülow, who played a role in advancing Strauss’s career. While “Serenade” has a classical formal structure, its melodic content hints at vibrant themes rich with passion and lyricism, which Strauss explores in his later works.

Two violins, a cello, a piano – no, this is not a classical quartet, but Salut Salon. For more than twenty years, the four virtuoso musicians have treated their audiences worldwide to mind-boggling musical capers – from Vivaldi to vocal acrobatics, from tango to »Tatort«, from rap to Rachmaninov. »Salut Salon is a passion that simply needed an outlet«, says the ensemble’s founder Angelika Bachmann. The current program, »Heimat« (Homeland) takes the typical Salut Salon approach to this multi-faceted notion, collecting music the four musicians have encountered on their travels. That includes works by Mozart, Saint-Saëns and Copland, songs from Finland, France, China and Egypt, unknown and famous pieces, their own compositions, and of course, as always: Tango Nuevo by Astor Piazzolla. The philosopher Nietzsche based his entire thinking on music. When he met the great composer Richard Wagner as a young man, he was overwhelmed – both artistically and intellectually. Wagner befriended him, had him write lyrics that praised Wagner himself, and shaped him into his ideological disciple. But as Nietzsche began to see through his mentor and despise his growing anti-Semitism, the questions grew: Where will this lead? What kind of world will this create?
