Established in 2014 by Patrick Massey and Rosie Wintour, the Pico Players have quickly grown to become one of London’s leading amateur orchestras, raising over £100,000 for charity to date. Proceeds from this concert will be going to a charity selected by the orchestra.

This colourful all-English programme takes off with William Walton’s music for the climactic aerial duel of Guy Hamilton’s classic 1969 movie. Walton was originally booked to compose the entire film score before MGM’s studio executives abruptly side-lined him in favour of Ron Goodwin. Walton’s battle scene was the only section that remained of his music but it’s also the film’s most memorable moment, capturing the altitudinous, rapid-firing action with breathless energy. Walton’s near contemporary, Sir Arthur Bliss, wrote his Cello Concerto for the great Russian virtuoso Mstislav Rostropovich, who gave its premiere at the Aldeburgh Festival in 1970. One of Bliss’s last major works, it’s an appealing mix of lyricism and the composer’s trademark rhythmic drive. Our soloist is Guy Johnston, a former BBC Young Musician winner and now one of the world’s leading cellists.*

The work is at once pastoral and romantic, the music fully expressing Holst’s affection for the landscape. It is also a gentle tribute to the great designer and Socialist visionary, William Morris, who was one of Holst’s great heroes, evoking Morris’ vision of the English countryside as a Heaven on Earth. It is a joyful work with hints of the greatness to come, and his masterpiece The Planets, with its visionary opening Mars, the Bringer of War. Invocation, a hauntingly contemplative work for cello and orchestra, has a shimmering, mystical quality that is curiously evocative – exotic, and yet somehow, unmistakably English. Written during the build up to the Second World War, Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem is an eloquent cry for peace and a reminder that war inevitably brings misery and loss before culminating in a joyous vision of the ending of war through reconciliation between people and nations and the hope for a brighter future.

Join us for an extraordinary evening with the Eugene Symphony as we present "The Planets" on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at 7:30 PM at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts. This out-of-this-world performance will be under the baton of Francesco Lecce-Chong, featuring the talented Dan Tepfer, piano and composer-in-residence, alongside the Eugene Symphony Chorus.

The evening will commence with John Adams' kinetic masterpiece, "Short Ride in a Fast Machine," evoking the thrill of an exhilarating sports car ride. This sets the stage for Dan Tepfer's "Three Scales of Interconnection," a concerto for piano and orchestra that promises a blend of improvisation and real-time visualizations, showcasing Tepfer's reputation as one of the moment's most adventurous and relevant musicians. The highlight of the night, Holst's "The Planets," will transport us through the solar system with its exciting and instantly recognizable melodies.

Dan Tepfer, born in 1982 in Paris to American parents, has earned an international reputation as a pianist-composer of wide-ranging innovation, individuality, and drive. Known for his refusal to set limits on himself, Tepfer has performed around the world with leading lights in both jazz and classical music and has released eleven albums of his own. His 2011 release, "Goldberg Variations / Variations," and his 2019 video album, "Natural Machines," have both received global acclaim, showcasing his unique blend of science, art, and improvisation.
