Ring in the holidays with Concordian Dawn! Join us for a program of beautiful and rousing seasonal Medieval music. The ensemble will perform a selection of favorites from the middle ages alongside rarely or never before heard musical gems, as well as premiere performances of compositions with Medieval texts by modern Medievalism composer, David Yardley. The premiere performance of this oratorio for chamber choir and piano trio will be preceded by a reading of the featured poems by poet Tracy K. Smith, as well as a brief conversation about the process for creating this piece.

In this third concert in a series exploring complex social issues, frequent guest Giancarlo Guerrero leads American composer Julia Wolfe’s BSO co-commissioned Her Story, featuring the Lorelei Ensemble women’s vocal group. Originally commissioned to commemorate the centenary of women’s right to vote in the U.S., the piece broadly speaks of the continuing struggle for women’s rights. The three movements of Polish composer Henryk Górecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs movingly contemplates the anguish of the separation of a mother from her child.

In this engrossing presentation, baritone and musicologist Jean Bernard Cerin explores the tale—across centuries and continents—of “Lisette quitté la plaine,” a enduringly popular folk tune from Cerin’s native Haiti. From France and Pennsylvania, to Louisiana and back to Haiti, the remarkable journey of “Lisette” over two centuries is a testament to the connecting power of music, as well as to the complicated legacies of empire and enslavement.

This program will feature a showing of “Lisette,” a feature-length documentary by Cerin and Brandi Berry, as well as performances from Cerin, who will be joined by Bay Area-based soprano Michele Kennedy, as well as pianist and musicologist Nicholas Mathew.
