Opera Theatre St. Louis is thrilled to present "Opera on the Go," a unique educational program designed to bring the enchanting world of opera directly to classrooms. This year, we feature a semi-staged, in-person performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's beloved 1879 comic opera, "The Pirates of Penzance." Tailored specifically for students in grades 3-12, "Opera on the Go" offers an immersive experience that goes beyond just watching a performance.

The program is scheduled to run from October 14th to October 26th, 2024, and includes three interactive workshops alongside the opera performance. These workshops are designed to engage students in the multifaceted world of opera through hands-on activities in Music and Drama, Character and Movement, and Stage Makeup. Each workshop aims to deepen students' understanding of opera as an art form and its relevance to the themes they encounter in popular music and everyday life.

- **Music & Drama Workshop:** Students explore how music sets the mood, defines characters, and enhances the storytelling in opera, drawing parallels to the music they hear daily.
- **Character & Movement Workshop:** This session focuses on how actors use movement to bring their characters to life on stage, offering students a chance to delve into the physical aspect of storytelling.
- **Makeup Workshop:** Participants learn basic stage makeup techniques to understand how makeup helps define a character's age, personality, and appearance.

**Program Requirements:**
- A tuned piano in good condition.
- Three separate spaces for the workshops, including a performance space of at least 30’ x 30’.
- The program is best suited for groups of 100 students or fewer for the workshops, with no limit on audience size for the performance.

Gilbert & Sullivan’s pirate ship docks on the Space & Treasure Coast’s when your Space Coast Symphony Orchestra teams up with Central Florida Vocal Arts to present a fully staged production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance, a hilarious, hopeful farce following young Frederic, an orphan who has mistakenly been apprenticed to an ineffectual but raucous band of pirates. He disavows the pirates’ way of life and falls for the beautiful Mabel. Frederic’s melodious tones win over the heart of Major-General Stanley’s songbird daughter, Mabel, but when the Pirate King discovers that General Stanley has lied about being an orphan to keep the pirates from stealing all of his belongings and carrying off his bevy of beautiful daughters, an “ingenious paradox” may prevent the budding romance and lead to the death of “The very model of a modern Major-General.”  Featuring an incredible cast, don’t miss this incredible production featuring the gorgeous sound of a full orchestra of one of the most beloved comic operas.
