Written between the two Wars, Ireland’s These Things Shall be is a powerful expression of humanistic and enlightenment values, a faith in the agency of individuals and a pacifist worldview. Ian Venables’ song cycle explores themes of love and sexuality through the poetry of the 19th and early 20th centuries. “Although the cycle’s underlying narrative portrays the love of man for man, I wanted to end the work with a celebration of the universality of love and especially the deep love that is found in a long-lasting relationship. This is a love that transcends sexual categories and is at the heart of a humane world where gay people no longer need to hide in ‘the shadows.’ Elgar’s Second Symphony is one of his most powerful and personal works, a musical portrait of a man and a civilisation standing at a turning point in history.

One of Britain’s best-loved choirs, The Sixteen – under Harry Christophers – returns to the Proms on Choral Day for some of the most serene and spiritual choral works written in England during the Victorian period – music in line with this ensemble’s singular combination of style and beauty, blend and expression.

Students perform a variety of selections that they have studied with faculty during the semester. Student performers include Dania Anabtawi and Joanne Oh (flute), Saira Arora (oboe), Ian Tam (clarinet), Olivia Leyba (French horn), Kimberly Rush (violin), plus Charis Kim, John Paul Ferrantino, Robin Shen and Joey Zobel (piano); offering selections that they have studied with faculty. They will be assisted by pianist Jennie Jung.

Elgar’s Piano Quintet was composed while the Elgars were staying at Brinkwells Cottage in Sussex. This inspirational setting sparked the composer’s imagination: as the summer of 1918 turned to autumn Elgar began composing the Quintet, a work of lyrical beauty that’s infused with the melancholy of the turning of the seasons.

Only the original instrumentation – and not one of many arrangements. That was the strict requirement of the three musical adventurers, Daniel Ottensamer, Stephan Koncz, and Christoph Traxler. The result is a complete anthology for clarinet trio, from which three pieces were chosen for an exciting journey. It begins with the healing power of bel canto sounds. For after a breakdown in Italy, Vincenzo Bellini enthusiast Mikhail Glinka essentially healed himself with the composition of his Trio pathétique. John Ireland then takes us to Britain's coast, complete with a sea shanty, before we reach the summit with the trio titan Beethoven.
