In celebration and remembrance of Juneteenth, the annual commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, the Minnesota Orchestra, alongside guests and members of the Twin Cities community, will perform a program featuring music by African American composers. This special event aims to honor the historical significance of Juneteenth through a rich and diverse musical experience.

Sought-after violinist Will Hagen returns to play Korngold’s Violin Concerto in D Major, the first non-film music he wrote after the defeat of Hitler in World War II. The rest of the program highlights pieces written by film composers and music made famous on the big screen, including the opening fanfare of Also sprach Zarathustra from “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Get ready for an epic night as the WCO dives into year two of our five-year project Musical Landscapes in Color with Convergence. Performed live and recorded for a spring album release, it celebrates the converging of contemporary voices of color by generation, gender, and style of composition. We begin with Fanfare and Fantasie by four-time Grammy nominee Patrice Rushen, followed by Umoja by renowned composer and flutist Valerie Coleman. The next piece Changes, by contemporary composer Andre Myers, reflects the ever-shifting landscape of the world we live in, and for the finale, movements from the Nope film suite by the prolific Michael Abels, a Grammy and Emmy nominee, and the recipient of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Music.
