**Overview:**
Set in the impoverished back alleys of Victorian London, "The Threepenny Opera" follows the underworld antihero Mackie Messer, also known as Mack the Knife, as he tries to woo Polly Peachum and elude the authorities. This landmark 20th-century work, rarely performed by a professional opera company, offers a satiric critique of capitalism and the meaning of morality in the slums. The opera is renowned for its palpable evocation of corruption and dread, set to Kurt Weill’s irresistible score.

A hundred years after it first shook Broadway, Show Boat still has things to say. Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II’s landmark American musical comes to Steinmetz Hall in a semi-staged concert production — with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra in the pit and a combined chorus drawn from Opera Orlando and Bethune-Cookman University. It is a story about the length of a life — the dazzling beginning, the long complicated middle, the grace it takes to keep going. Kern and Hammerstein wrote music for all of it. Not just the moments that shine, but the ones that don’t. A hundred years later it still knows something true about what it means to be human “…ooooh, OPERA!”
