Everyone has seemed to want to write for her: Anne-Sophie Mutter’s artistry has inspired many of today’s leading composers to create new works. The Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki wrote no fewer than four pieces for her. The first was his large-scale Second Violin Concerto from 1995. Titled Metamorphosen, its six movements explore transformation and renewal — shifting among different states of mind and between tradition and modernity. Interpreting this concerto, Mutter admits, is “a physical and psychological challenge that I accept with gratitude.” At her side is one of America’s finest orchestras, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Under its Music Director Manfred Honeck, the second half of the program is devoted to Antonín Dvořák’s exhilarating Symphony From the New World, the very archetype of a musical “American Dream.” Dvořák intended the work to show the United States a path toward its own Promised Land of classical music, with a distinctly American musical voice — which is why we hear echoes of African American spirituals as well as melodies and dance rhythms of Indigenous peoples woven into his Ninth.

The evening opens with Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, a shimmering tribute to French Baroque style and the memory of fallen World War I soldiers, blending grace and poignancy in equal measure. Next, the WFSO proudly presents a new work by acclaimed composer Brittany Green, whose music is known for its bold textures and powerful commentary—this dynamic piece promises to challenge and inspire. After intermission, the orchestra brings to life one of the most beloved symphonies in the repertoire: Dvořák’s New World Symphony, a sweeping, heartfelt exploration of American spirit and longing, infused with Bohemian soul.

A celebration of American stories and voices, ROCO In Concert: Do You Hear What I Hear? welcomes conductor Anthony Parnther in his ROCO debut, with guest concertmaster Tereza Stanislav, leading the 40-piece chamber orchestra on Saturday, February 7, 5:00 p.m. at The Church of St. John the Divine. Featured are Duke Ellington’s New World A-Comin’, spotlighting ROCO pianist Audrey Andrist, and the premiere of Patricia Leonard‘s Persistence of the Dream, a ROCO commission commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, along with the ROCO commissioned premieres of Gala Flagello’s Droughts & Downpours for string orchestra, and Jason Stephens’ rescore of Antonin Dvořák’s New World Symphony.

Karén Hakobyan conducts Pegasus: the Orchestra's SEASON FINALE in a monumental program that takes the listener through a Journey of American Music. He begins the evening with a World Premiere of a COMMISSION by a Living American Composer (to be announced). Next, the stunning Piano Concerto of Amy Beach is performed by celebrated pianist Asiya Korepanova. This rarely performed masterpiece was premiered by Boston Symphony with the composer (Amy Beach) herself at the piano in 1900.
