On February 22nd, the Potsdam Chamber Academy and the NDR Vokalensemble will play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's cantata "Davide penitente" and other works in the Elbphilharmonie. Chief conductor Klaas Stok will be at the podium.

With Christmas carols from Germany and Great Britain, Klaas Stok and the NDR Vokalensemble will bring a festive atmosphere to St. Georgen Church in Wismar on December 20th.

In the run-up to the performances of Richard Strauss's "Elektra," the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and the NDR Vokalensemble, under their chief conductors Alan Gilbert and Klaas Stok, will devote a joint concert to other heroic myths in music. It becomes clear: the oft-praised heroism itself is a myth. For just as Elektra, in her supposedly self-sacrificing fight against injustice, becomes a possessed murderer herself, so too do the protagonists of this concert program "fail": Orpheus cannot free his wife Eurydice from the underworld because he is looking around for her; Napoleon, to whom Ludwig van Beethoven originally wanted to dedicate his "Eroica," tramples on the human rights he proclaimed; and Prometheus, another hidden "dedicatee" of the symphony that has itself become a myth, also makes several mistakes as the legendary originator of human civilization...

It is the first courtroom drama in history. In Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion, Jesus stands before Pontius Pilate to answer for his actions while the Jews gathered outside demand his death. The St Thomas cantor created a gripping tragedy from the sparse Gospel, which is still one of the most dramaturgically effective works in music history. Bach translated the almost scenic plot into vivid tonal colours. The orchestral prelude opens the inexorable sequence of capture, condemnation and crucifixion with disturbing dissonances, before leading into an enchanting choral movement in praise of God.
