ROCO’s Connections Series continues with Quartet for All Time, a program of emotional resonance. Through a selection of thoughtfully curated works, this concert exhibits music’s power to reflect and uplift in times of grief and remembrance.

Featuring Rebecca Fischer (violin), Alexis Gerlach (cello), Nathan Williams (clarinet), and Audrey Andrist (piano), the evening honors personal and collective memory through music that speaks across generations and traditions, inviting audiences to reflect on the role of music in preserving hope and history.

Dover Quartet collaborates with guest clarinetist Romie de Guise-Langlois (making her CMH debut) on a CMH-co-commissioned quintet titled Equilibrium by Rice composer Pierre Jalbert. One of Haydn’s milestone op.20 quartets and Mozart’s groundbreaking Clarinet Quintet bookend the evening’s repertoire respectively, both equally admired and beloved works.

The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music proudly announces its grand finale event for the 2024 season, taking place on Sunday, August 11, at 7 PM at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. This symphonic journey, titled "Passage," features an exhilarating lineup of guest artists and premieres that promise to captivate and inspire audiences.

Highlighting the evening is violin virtuoso Philippe Quint, who will grace the stage with his exceptional talent. The program includes the West Coast premieres of four remarkable compositions, each bringing its unique cultural and musical narratives to the forefront.

The concert kicks off with "Baião N Blues" by Brazilian-American composer Clarice Assad. This piece is a vibrant fusion of the traditional Brazilian Baião rhythm and the soulful essence of American blues, showcasing Assad's flair for blending diverse musical genres.

Following this, Belize-born British composer Errollyn Wallen's "Violin Concerto" will make its West Coast debut. This concerto, a product of a years-long collaboration with Philippe Quint, is deeply personal, reflecting Quint's childhood memories and showcasing his technical prowess and emotional depth.

American composer Pierre Jalbert's "Passage," also receiving its West Coast premiere, pays a modern tribute to Beethoven's Fourth Symphony. Jalbert's composition is a journey through contrasting movements, bridging centuries and evoking a profound sense of the present.

The finale of the evening, "Mariachitlán" by Mexican composer Juan Pablo Contreras, transports the audience to the vibrant streets of Jalisco, Mexico. This piece is a celebration of mariachi music, infused with the spirit and traditions of the region, and promises to end the festival on a high note.

The Cabrillo Festival's grand finale, "Passage," is a testament to the power of contemporary music to transcend cultural boundaries and connect people through the universal language of music. Don't miss this unforgettable evening of world-class performances and groundbreaking compositions.

Cal Performances favorites David Finckel and Wu Han return to Berkeley with a ravishing program curated with their signature thoughtfulness and flair. As co-directors of both the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Music@Menlo, “these two powerhouses have, over a period of decades, had an enormous, worldwide impact on chamber music—old and new—and have actually helped shape how people think about it in the 21st century” (The Berkshire Eagle). They grace Hertz Hall with their revelatory ensemble playing, honed over years of sold-out tours and acclaimed recordings. The program includes Shostakovich’s athletic D minor sonata, Brahms’ passionate Sonata No. 2 in F major, and a recently commissioned work by Pierre Jalbert that is vivid with instrumental color and rhythmic interplay.

CMSFW was part of a group that commissioned Pierre Jalbert to compose a work, “Clarinet Quintet,” to be performed by the Dover Quartet and clarinetist Romie de Guise-Langlois. Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society, Arizona Friends of Chamber Music and Houston Chamber Music Society joined in the collaboration. This performance will be the first time it will be heard in the metroplex.
