Scottish-born Kenneth MacMillan is one of the leading choreographers of the 20th century. His 1966 ballet «Concerto», set to the music of Shostakovich's second piano concerto, is a celebrated piece of pure choreographic poetry.

In Cathy Marston’s ballet «Mrs. Robinson» – based on the novel «The Graduate» by Charles Webb – a recent college graduate becomes involved with the attractive Mrs. Robinson, a married woman from his parents’ circle of friends.

Featuring the visionary works of Hans Zimmer, Ludovico Einaudi, and Max Richter, this concert blends cinematic grandeur, minimalist clarity, and haunting melodic nuance. Zimmer’s expansive compositions, like “Cornfield Chase” from Interstellar, conjure the vastness of space, while Einaudi’s delicate piano-driven pieces, such as “Petrichor”, invite quiet reflection. Richter’s poignant “Sofa Chess” and the ethereal “Infra 4” blend timeless restraint with contemporary texture.

Rediscover centuries-old classics in a completely new light, with two works that infuse music of the Baroque period with shimmering contemporary flourishes. Following the festive splash of one of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Novelletten for Strings, David Bruce uses brief sequences from the music of Jean-Baptiste Lully to create a vibrant kaleidoscope of sound in the U.S. premiere of his Lully Loops. Afterwards, fall in love with The Four Seasons all over again through Max Richter’s mesmerizing reimagining of Vivaldi’s timeless masterpiece, which preserves the original’s emotional depth and enduring appeal for generations to come.

Aaron Schwebel returns to our stage to perform the entire The Four Seasons Recomposed by Richter whose re-writing of Vivaldi’s work moves it away from being the omnipresent piece of muzak that it has become. In contrast, Ligeti’s violin concerto, creating unexpected new sounds combined in novel ways, even uses mistuned string instruments, ocarinas and slide whistles to suggest Hungarian folksong. Shimmering harmonies, slow-moving, soaring melodies and rhythmic complexities and the “mad virtuosity” of the soloist’s role all contribute to the high level of excitement in this piece. Forming a bridge between the “baroque” harpsichord material in the Richter and the modern nature of Ligeti’s work, a solo harpsichord piece by Ligeti appears as a musical amuse-bouche.

A venerated 75-year-old music institution meets one of the most distinctive compositional voices in contemporary music when the Zurich Chamber Orchestra visits with selections from Max Richter’s marvelous Recomposed project. Conducting from the violin, Daniel Hope leads the orchestra in Richter’s cleverly reimagined versions of Vivaldi’s timeless The Four Seasons. Richter’s “intriguing and imaginative” (The Guardian) score de- and re-constructs Vivaldi with inspiration drawn from electronic and club music, minimalist concert music, and recording studio techniques, creating a musical universe both familiar and strikingly fresh that has been a huge hit with audiences. Complementing Richter’s Vivaldi odyssey, the accomplished Zurich players also perform two timeless works for string orchestra—Elgar’s exhilarating Introduction and Allegro and Mendelssohn’s lively D minor violin concerto.
