Marios Papadopoulos takes the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra through the momentous symphonic dance that is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, a work whose pounding, marching and pirouetting permanently realigned western music’s fundamental relationship between rhythm and harmony. Another of our own musicians, Concertmaster Carmine Lauri, is the soloist in the most lyrical and operatic violin concerto by the great guru of virtuosity, Niccolò Paganini, a work that will fill the Sheldonian Theatre with rococo elegance. To open, all the ferocity and impact of one of Beethoven’s most striking orchestral overtures, ‘Coriolan’.

Tchaikovsky’s majestic Italian Capriccio crowns our season, in a program that also includes a unique work: Concerto for Birds and Orchestra Cantus Arcticus by Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara, and Tokuji Miyasaka performing Italian virtuoso Nicolai Paganini’s breathtaking Violin Concerto No. 1.

Since his debut with the Jerusalem Symphony at the age of 10, the outstanding American violinist has enjoyed an extraordinary career. A winner of multiple awards – including a Grammy – he was awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1990, followed in 2008 by the Avery Fisher Prize, while in 2012 Musical America named him Instrumentalist of the Year.

### Bravo Vail Music Festival 2023 - Academy of St Martin in the Fields

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields returns to the Bravo Vail Music Festival for a three-concert residency from June 22 to June 25, 2023. Under the direction of Music Director Joshua Bell, the orchestra will perform two concerts featuring violin concertos by Bach and Paganini. The festival will open with a performance of Beethoven’s magnificent Piano Concerto No. 2, with Bravo Vail Artistic Director Anne-Marie McDermott at the piano.
