Solo violin works continue Augustin Hadelich’s residency this season, culminating in J.S. Bach’s D minor Partita with the expressively and technically transcendent Chaconne — considered the “Everest” of violin performance. The Partita is balanced by music of Bach’s contemporary Georg Philipp Telemann, selections from Nicolò Paganini’s brilliant Caprices, and a Bach-inspired solo sonata from 1923 by the Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe, the Sonata No. 5, from 1923. American composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s 1979 Blue/s Forms is a work championed by Hadelich in recital.

A string quartet of American Symphony Orchestra musicians performs works by Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, William Grant Still, and Antonín Dvořák, each reflecting a unique perspective on the American musical experience. Perkinson’s String Quartet No. 1 blends classical form with elements of jazz—a truly American genre—reflecting the vibrancy and depth of Black American music. Still’s Lyric Quartette draws on folk idioms and lyrical expression to evoke scenes of American life, rooted in his vision of a distinctly American classical voice.

Highlights of recent performances include recitals with pianist Orli Shaham at the Kauffman Music Center’s Musical Storefront series (NYC), Music for Food (NYC), and at Colorado’s Telluride Music Festival and Music off the Hook Arts Music Festival. Buck was awarded a 2019 Music Faculty Incentive Grant by the SUNY Purchase Conservatory that facilitated two commissions: John Harbison’s DeBut for solo violin, and Fantasia on Beethoven’s Spring Sonata for violin and piano by Bruce Adolphe. In October 2021, she joined Grammy Award-winning producer, Silas Brown, to record Harbison’s Suite for Solo Violin for a forthcoming album.

The Sphinx Organization’s “flagship performing entity” presents a varied and vibrant program of string music in this acclaimed annual event. Hear several works by Joplin, including two ragtime essentials and a newly arranged overture from Treemonisha. Additional concepts of American music are explored in Derrick Skye’s multifaceted and optimistic American Mirror, Part One, and in a New York premiere by renowned violinist-composer Curtis Stewart, who “translates stories of American self-determination to the concert stage.” Soloist Njioma Chinyere Grevious—winner of the Robert F. Smith First Prize and Audience Choice at the 2023 Sphinx Competition—performs Perkinson’s quintessentially American solo composition, Blue/s Forms. Pianist Awadagin Pratt joins Daniel Hope and New Century for this program of potent 20th century American works for strings that speak to our collective emotions. Coping with the senselessness of war is the heartbeat of the program’s first half, with composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson confronting his concerns about the Korean War through his work Grass. In contrast, composer David Diamond wrote his exuberant work Rounds to dispel the gloomy wartime mood of the 1940s in vivid fashion. The program closes with Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade (after Plato’s Symposium), an epic work for solo violin, strings and percussion inspired by the ancient Greek debate over love in its many forms.

The luxurious strings of Orpheus expand Dvorak’s iconic American Quartet into a Chamber Symphony, magnifying the vibrant sounds rooted in spirituals and Native drumming. The authentic American language that Dvorak envisioned really flowered when jazz seeped into the concert hall, as in this Clarinet Concerto that Aaron Copland wrote for the “King of Swing” himself, Benny Goodman, performed here by Anthony McGill in his long-awaited Orpheus debut. Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s miniature symphony samples everything from Bach to pop as it paints an intergenerational portrait of an American family.

The Sphinx Virtuosi is an exemplary chamber orchestra and the “flagship performing entity” of the Sphinx Organization. They pair time-tested string music—both enduringly popular and underperformed—with music by some of today’s most compelling composers. Hear New York premieres by the prolific Javier Farías; and bassist, composer, and 2014 Sphinx Competition winner Xavier Foley. Two of the 20th century’s great composers are represented in a fusion of Bachian and Brazilian-folk styles by Villa-Lobos; and a bustling movement from Perkinson’s Sinfonietta No. 2. Also featured are spirited, original songs by cellist and singer Abel Selaocoe, who performs with the ensemble.

Inspired by the poetry of Langston Hughes and Julia Alvarez, Sphinx Virtuosi brings you a program showcasing the beauty and tradition of excellence inherent in classical music created and performed by Black and Latinx composers for many generations. Together, SV seeks to uplift spirits through sharing the sounds that inspire us and transcend the boundaries of time, history, and struggle. Comprising 18 of the nation’s top Black and Latinx classical soloists, the Sphinx Virtuosi present a program inspired by present day events and the vibrant gifts of the past that we cherish today.

Laquita Mitchell is the soprano soloist in Barber's poignant evocation of American life as seen by a young child. Ethel Smyth takes the listener on a journey from nostalgia to mirth to triumph. Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson employs an eclectic mix of musical styles; his Sinfonietta No. 1 is by turns searching and pensive, then rushes to a dramatic finale. A brooding piece for strings by Julia Perry begins the concert.

Conductor James Blachly serves as Associate Editor and Orchestral Liaison for the Metro Detroit-based African Diaspora Music Project (ADMP), directed by University of Michigan professor Dr. Louise Toppin. The ADMP database has thus far compiled more than 1,300 published works for orchestra by African diaspora composers, including those by Perkinson and Perry. The DSO is proud to highlight the work of the ADMP with these performances.

The Milwaukee Shepherd Express conjectured that he “well may be the best violinist in the world. [His] gorgeous sound is ample and rich always. Every detail is played with perfectly clear intent.” Augustin Hadelich’s astonishing technique, eloquent phrasing, and seeming effortlessness will be on display in two of Bach’s works for unaccompanied violin. These pinnacles of compositional achievement offer a supreme challenge to the soloist on technical, physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. Inspired by a performance of Bach's six sonatas and partitas for unaccompanied violin, the Belgian composer and violinist Eugene Ysaÿe wrote his own set of six solo sonatas in 1923. Each of the sonatas was dedicated to a younger violinist and reflects something of Ysaÿe's concept of the dedicatee's personality. Hadelich will play the second sonata of the set, in which Bach is not just the inspiration, but the "obsession,” (the work’s subtitle). It contains a musical quotation from the Bach E major partita which opens this program. Perkinson’s Blue/s Forms deftly hops genres in a fusion of both blues and baroque styles. Often family and friends are the source of inspiration for compositions, as is the case for this program. Richard Strauss was inspired by his father Franz's horn playing when composing his Serenade for 13 Winds. Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson wrote Generations, a dance of the past, as a tribute to the women in his family. SPCO concertmaster Steven Copes performs Concerto in D for Violin and Orchestra, which was written for Joseph Joachim, Johannes Brahms' friend, for over 40 years.

Augustin Hadelich is one of the great violinists of our time. Often referred to by colleagues as a musician’s musician, he was named Musical America’s 2018 “Instrumentalist of the Year,” and is consistently cited worldwide for his phenomenal technique, soulful approach, and insightful interpretations. Hadelich won a 2016 Grammy® Award for “Best Classical Instrumental Solo.” Born in Italy to German parents, Augustin Hadelich is now an American citizen. He holds an Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School and received the Gold Medal at the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, an Avery Fisher Career Grant (2009), a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship in the UK (2011), the Warner Music Prize (2015), and was appointed to the violin faculty at Yale School of Music. Augustin Hadelich plays the violin “Leduc, ex-Szeryng” fashioned by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù in 1744 and generously loaned to him by a patron through the Tarisio Trust.

CUSO’s season finale is a celebration of scintillating rhythms, beginning with George Gershwin’s brilliant symphonic tone poem, An American in Paris. The program also features soulful and syncopated music for strings from Sinfonietta No. 1 by Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson. CUSO is thrilled to welcome the immensely talented pianist Rochelle Sennet, performing Gershwin’s I Got Rhythm Variations. For the grand finale, CUSO performs Maurice Ravel’s orchestration of Modest Mussorgsky’s iconic Pictures at an Exhibition, presented with a movie produced for CUSO by Shatterglass Studios. Enjoy the scenic journey featuring photography by Larry Kanfer and Karyl Wackerlin, with 970 photos of scenes from Champaign-Urbana, central Illinois, and around the world, including Italy, Normandy, Africa, Austria, China, and Peru.

He has performed with all the major American orchestras as well as the Berliner Philharmoniker, Concertgebouworkest, Orchestre National de France, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, and many others.

Musical Journalism: Continuing a Legacy through the Flute.
This is a concert inspired by Adam W. Sadberry’s late grandfather and unsung hero of the Civil Rights Movement, L. Alex Wilson. Wilson’s work as an editor and journalist changed the world through covering pivotal Civil Rights events including the lynching of Emmett Till, the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the desegregation of Central High School by the Little Rock 9, the last of which played a part in Wilson’s transformation into a martyr. In this concert, Adam intertwines articles that he collected from the archives of the Tri-State Defender, Wilson’s newspaper in Memphis, TN, with music and dance that contextualizes the humanity and inhumanity of the stories.

Experience the living traditions of many cultures through music and art. Composers featured in this program draw heavily on their own traditions, backgrounds and experiences to create music. In Serenade for Winds, Antonín Dvořák celebrates his Czech homeland in a suite of lively marches and dances. Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s Sinfonietta No. 1 and Gabriela Ortiz’s La Calaca blend traditional song-forms and rhythms in works for string orchestra.
