Join us for an exceptional musical journey with Yun Qu Tan, a Master of Music student at the Northwestern Bienen School of Music, showcasing his talent on the saxophone. This captivating recital is scheduled for Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 12:00pm CDT, in the intimate setting of the McClintock Choral and Recital Room, located within the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Center for the Musical Arts.

Yun Qu Tan, under the tutelage of Taimur Sullivan, will present a diverse program that includes arrangements and compositions that span a range of emotions and styles. The recital will feature the Sonata for Flute and Piano, FP 164 by Francis Poulenc arranged by Kyle Mechmet, Memories of Xiaoxiang by Lei Liang, Maurice Ravel's Kaddish from Deux mélodies hébraïques arranged by Yun Qu Tan himself, Épodo by Jesús Torres, the Saxophone Concerto by Henri Tomasi, and Grab it by Jacob ter Veldhuis. Accompanying Yun Qu Tan on the piano will be Nathan Canfield, adding depth and harmony to the performance.

Longy’s Divergent Studio presents a program of Lei Liang’s “inarguably gorgeous” (Washington Post) compositions, performed by festival participants hailing from all over the U.S., as well as New York City-based new music chamber group, loadbang. Liang’s music is a “colorful and dramatic fusion” of East and West (The American Academy of Arts and Letters, 2021). Addressing issues both civil and environmental, it is “deeply philosophical, yet sensual, evocative, yet abstract, and disciplined, yet spontaneous” (Yayoi Uno Everett, Linear Notes (Mode Records)).
