The Brentano String Quartet, whose name refers to Beethoven’s »immortal beloved« Antonie Brentano, is known for its brilliant ensemble playing, technical perfection and remarkable vibrancy. In 2025, the American quartet, which looks back on several acclaimed performances at the Dresdner Musikfestspiele, returns with a work commissioned from Lei Liang, a composer born in China, but now living in the USA and considered one of the most astonishing voices in New Music.

With a career spanning over three decades, the Brentano Quartet has appeared throughout the world to popular and critical acclaim. The New York Times extols its “luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism; and the Times (London) hails their “wonderful, selfless music-making.” They bring their “Evocations of Home” program to San Diego—which offers a set of perspectives on the idea of home, culturally, intellectually, emotionally, and geographically. The evening program prominently features a new work by UC San Diego Professor Lei Liang, alongside movements byDvorak, Schubert, Bartok and Monteverdi that evoke a sense of place, identity and heritage.

Join us for an exceptional musical journey with Yun Qu Tan, a Master of Music student at the Northwestern Bienen School of Music, showcasing his talent on the saxophone. This captivating recital is scheduled for Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 12:00pm CDT, in the intimate setting of the McClintock Choral and Recital Room, located within the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Center for the Musical Arts.

Yun Qu Tan, under the tutelage of Taimur Sullivan, will present a diverse program that includes arrangements and compositions that span a range of emotions and styles. The recital will feature the Sonata for Flute and Piano, FP 164 by Francis Poulenc arranged by Kyle Mechmet, Memories of Xiaoxiang by Lei Liang, Maurice Ravel's Kaddish from Deux mélodies hébraïques arranged by Yun Qu Tan himself, Épodo by Jesús Torres, the Saxophone Concerto by Henri Tomasi, and Grab it by Jacob ter Veldhuis. Accompanying Yun Qu Tan on the piano will be Nathan Canfield, adding depth and harmony to the performance.

Longy’s Divergent Studio presents a program of Lei Liang’s “inarguably gorgeous” (Washington Post) compositions, performed by festival participants hailing from all over the U.S., as well as New York City-based new music chamber group, loadbang. Liang’s music is a “colorful and dramatic fusion” of East and West (The American Academy of Arts and Letters, 2021). Addressing issues both civil and environmental, it is “deeply philosophical, yet sensual, evocative, yet abstract, and disciplined, yet spontaneous” (Yayoi Uno Everett, Linear Notes (Mode Records)).

BMOP continues its extended 25th Anniversary celebrations with a trip to Carnegie Hall. Featuring three works originally commissioned, premiered, and recorded by BMOP, "Play It Again" provides the capstone to the first 25 years of BMOP's mission.

Andrew Norman's Play, Lei Liang's A Thousand Mountain, A Million Streams, and Lisa Bielawa's In medias res all receive their New York premieres on the historic Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage in Carnegie Hall.
