In this exciting program, Composer-in-Residence Andy Akiho presents a work that celebrates percussion and rhythm and displays his spellbinding artistry—and that of the Oregon Symphony’s stellar percussion section in the solo spotlight. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony also thrills with the life-affirming sounds of timpani, bass drum, and cymbals and engages you with this passionate work, about which he confessed, “There is not a single bar in this Symphony which I have not truly felt, and which is not an echo of my most intimate spiritual life…”

The Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program: American Composers Orchestra and League of American Orchestras have established two 30-orchestra consortiums, each supporting commissions by six women and nonbinary EarShot alumni. Each composer writes a 6–8 minute orchestral work and develops an educational or community-focused program presented in partnership with each orchestra. In the 2024–25 season, ten composers have their works performed by fifteen orchestras across the U.S.

TONAL TRANSFORMATION is the final subscription concert for Chicago Sinfonietta’s 2024-25 Season. Maestra Mei-Ann Chen’s program features transformative collaborations of musical styles, instrumentation, and inspiration. Having journeyed this season through music celebrating youth, women, culture, heritage, creativity, emotions, and more, Chicago Sinfonietta pays tribute to those that allow us to transform our artform for the better.

The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra's second Masterworks concert of the season, "ATTENTION with Chris Thile," pays homage to Appalachian musical traditions with a captivating blend of classical and contemporary compositions. The evening features the extraordinary talents of Grammy Award-winning mandolinist Chris Thile, known for his genre-defying musical prowess and innovative compositions. Thile will perform his new concerto, "ATTENTION," a narrative song cycle that showcases his virtuosic mandolin skills in a dynamic collaboration with the orchestra.

The program also includes "In the Beginning" by Brittany J. Green, a North Carolina-based composer whose work brings a fresh, modern perspective to the concert. Verdi’s "Overture to La Forza del Destino" adds a touch of operatic drama, harking back to the WSO’s inaugural season. Additionally, Leonard Bernstein’s "Three Dance Episodes from On the Town" will be performed, celebrating the legacy of Wheeling native Everett Lee, a pioneering Black conductor who made significant contributions to the world of classical music.

Under the baton of Music Director John Devlin, an ardent advocate for American music and innovative concert design, the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra promises an evening of rich musical storytelling and exceptional artistry. Devlin’s leadership and vision continue to elevate the orchestra, making this concert a highlight of the season.

ATTENTION! with Chris Thile

Transcendence explores music that reaches beyond boundaries—spiritual, emotional, and artistic. Quenton Blache’s Habari Gani opens the program with a title drawn from the Swahili greeting heard during Kwanzaa, setting a tone of reflection and community. Pianist and composer Stewart Goodyear takes the stage for his own Piano Concerto, a virtuosic work blending classical form with a contemporary voice. Our program continues with Brittany Green’s electrifying Testify! and Carlos Simon’s Movements for Flute, featuring WCO principal flute Brandon LePage, a work that merges expressive lyricism with modern rhythmic drive. We close with Anthony Kelley’s Spirituals of Liberation, drawing on the enduring power of spiritual traditions and their message of hope. Together, these works form a musical journey rising through reflection, celebration, and resilience.
