Solo violin works continue Augustin Hadelich’s residency this season, culminating in J.S. Bach’s D minor Partita with the expressively and technically transcendent Chaconne — considered the “Everest” of violin performance. The Partita is balanced by music of Bach’s contemporary Georg Philipp Telemann, selections from Nicolò Paganini’s brilliant Caprices, and a Bach-inspired solo sonata from 1923 by the Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe, the Sonata No. 5, from 1923. American composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s 1979 Blue/s Forms is a work championed by Hadelich in recital.

Bach’s music than to include two of his most monumental works for solo violin – the idyllic C major sonata as well as the legendary D minor Chaconne – and to juxtapose them with two solo sonatas by the 20th-century Belgian violin giant Eugène Ysaÿe, directly inspired by Bach’s writings and containing an emotional power that has captured my imagination on a personal level. “This program delves into the legends and myths of violin lore via the three-sided conversation between violin, violinist, and composer. We kick off this journey with a solo violin sonata composed by the namesake of the violin I now play, the Belgian virtuoso Eugène Ysaÿe. The Devil’s Trill Sonata is the virtuosic consequence of a Faustian pact between Tartini and his violin teacher—the devil himself. Franz Schubert gushed “I have heard an angel sing” after attending a sold-out performance in Vienna by Niccolò Paganini on his famed “Cannone” Guarneri del Gesù. The second half of the concert features more earthly pursuits in the form of two wedding gifts. César Franck dedicated his famed sonata to his longtime collaborator and friend Eugène Ysaÿe on his wedding day (you can’t miss the church bells in the finale). For my own nuptials last summer, my groomsman and musical best friend, composer Chris Rogerson, presented me with this Arietta.”

Bach reached the pinnacle of his contrapuntal creativity at a time when the century was turning its back on him. Fortunately for his posterity, otherwise he would not have left behind one of the most coveted and yet most difficult works in cello literature. The purist beauty of the music, coupled with its technical difficulties, as well as the numerous unanswered questions of interpretation, lead some cellists to devote their entire lives to intensive study of the suites. Alexander Warenberg, too, has taken on this life's work. In addition to his award from ARD, he also received a special prize from the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2024 for his performance in the final round of the music competition. At Schloss Favorite, you will have the opportunity to experience this promising cellist at work. In addition to the dance suites, Alexander Warenberg will also present a Bach-inspired sonata by the Belgian composer Eugène Ysaÿe.

Experience the majestic blend of cultures with the "Symphonie du Nouveau Monde" performed by the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (OPRL) under the baton of Pablo González. This iconic symphony, first premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1893, is a masterful fusion of Czech music and melodies inspired by the musical folklore of the Native Americans. Notably, it features one of the most beautiful themes ever written for the English horn in its slow movement.

The concert will also spotlight the orchestral music of Ysaÿe, which has seen a resurgence of interest over the past decade. Among the rediscovered gems is the enchanting "Poème nocturne" from 1926, with the OPRL having the honor of recording the first album of this piece in December 2023.

This performance is part of the "Grands classiques" series and is available for both subscription and à la carte booking. Since its inception, Musica Juventutis has been a cornerstone of Austrian concert culture and a fixture in the Vienna Konzerthaus's music program. Many internationally acclaimed artists, such as Angelika Kirchschlager, Till Fellner, and Patricia Kopatchinskaja, made their debuts as part of Musica Juventutis. This year, we present Leonhard Baumgartner, an up-and-coming violinist who made his debut with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the age of 15. With this series, the Vienna and Blaibach concert halls are continuing a collaboration made possible through the generous support of Dr. Burkhard and Gabriele Gantenbein.

»A very nice change!« This is how our concertmaster Bart Vandenbogaerde describes his performances as a soloist or in small ensembles. The Belgian showed an enormous musical talent from an early age and quickly fell in love with the violin. He has been playing in our orchestra since 2013 and, according to him, feels »very much at home« in Bamberg. In this chamber concert, he and pianist Margarita Höhenrieder will perform inspiring works that embody the spirit of late Romanticism and the fin de siècle. It begins with a stroke of genius by 23-year-old Richard Strauss: his only violin sonata was composed in 1887 and is a milestone full of sparkling tonal colours, which the Munich-born composer mastered so congenially. Gabriel Fauré was living in vibrant Paris at the time, where his opus 13 was premièred in 1877: The composition impresses with an energetic opening movement with original themes, a fantastic Andante in a swinging barcarole rhythm, an ethereal Scherzo and a whirling finale. The concluding pieces, which originate from the homeland of our concertmaster, are characterised by equally virtuoso upswings:  Eugène Ysaÿe was a legendary violinist for whom a number of composers wrote pieces - and about whom it was said: »The birds sing, he plays the violin!« But the Belgian musician wrote impressive music himself, including the Mazurkas published in 1884: In these brilliant pieces, intimate music-making alternates with passionate eruptions. This will be an enchanting chamber concert, not least because Bart Vandenbogaerde plays the music on a very special instrument - a violin made by the famous Italian violin maker Guarneri del Gesù in 1742.

Paul Huang was a recipient of a 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant and a 2017 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists. Huang makes recent and forthcoming appearances with the Mariinsky Orchestra with Valery Gergiev, Detroit Symphony with Leonard Slatkin, Houston Symphony with Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Rotterdam Philharmonic with Lahav Shani, Seoul Philharmonic with Markus Stenz, and return to the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan as its artist-in-residence. A frequent guest artist at music festivals worldwide, he recently stepped in for Anne-Sophie Mutter at Bravo! Vail Music Festival playing Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 with Chamber Orchestra Vienna-Berlin as well as recital debuts at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland and Aspen Music Festival, both to critical acclaim. He is an artist member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and plays on the legendary 1742 ex-Wieniawski Guarneri del Gesù on loan through the Stradivari Society of Chicago.

Ana Julija Mlejnik Železnik is a Slovenian violinist who has performed as a soloist on international stages such as Tokyo, Paris, London, Brussels, Ancona, Ljubljana and Toronto. She has won the first prize at the Genoa International Competition and has shared the stage with many important musicians. She is also the artistic director of the Loka da Camera Chamber Music Festival in Škofja Loka, Slovenia. Additionally, she is a member of several chamber music ensembles.

To start our Classics Series, Music Director Nicholas Hersh and the MSO will guide us through the four seasons. The evening will start with Mendelssohn’s romantic Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Ortiz’s La Calaca which features driving rhythms and stirring melodies inspired by the traditions of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) that celebrate the afterlife in Mexican culture. Finally, we’ll dive deeper into each season with a “mixtape” from Hersh featuring one movement each from Vivaldi, Richter, Ysaÿe, and Piazzolla to create an exploration not only of the seasons, but of each of their cultures.

This concert marks the Tippet debut of two multi-faceted artists – Grammy-nominated violinist Tessa Lark and classical and jazz harpist Charles Overton. Tessa Lark, consistently praised by critics and audiences for her astounding range of sounds, technical agility, and musical elegance, is also a highly acclaimed fiddler in the tradition of her native Kentucky. Charles Overton is a frequent performer with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops, as well as jazz clubs throughout the northeast. He aims to create a musical environment that is accessible, exciting, and resonates deeply with audiences. Lark and Overton are performers, arrangers, and composers of a program including early romantic virtuoso music by Camille Saint-Saëns, Eugène Ysaÿe, and Jean Cras; a traditional fiddle work “Boy in the Gap”; and the Morgan Lewis jazz standard "How High the Moon". Their performance will conclude with a trip to Argentina for Astor Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango.

New Zealand-born violinist Geneva Lewis has forged a reputation as a musician of consummate artistry. Named a BBC New Generation Artist (2022–24), Ms. Lewis is also the recipient of a 2022 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, and a 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant. Holly Lam is a senior at Washington University in St. Louis, balancing the rigors of a pre-med track with the depth and diversity of double majoring in anthropology and music. Her musical journey began at age four, when she first picked up a violin. Since then, her passion for the art has only grown, encompassing a remarkable proficiency in various instruments, including the piano, viola, and organ. Her musical curiosity has even led her to explore unconventional instruments such as the mesmerizing musical saw. Join us for an enchanting afternoon of classical music at the Westminster Symphony Sundays: Piano & String Quintet, presented by the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra. This special event will take place on Sunday, February 18, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Westminster Village Community Center, located at 1120 East Davis Drive, Terre Haute, IN, 47802.

The THSO is excited to offer this free chamber music concert series to the public, featuring performances that last between 45-60 minutes. Each month, attendees are treated to an afternoon filled with magnificent music performed by our talented THSO musicians, including Chian-Yi Victor Tsai on violin, Eugene Chin on viola, Kyle Johnson as the associate principal cello, Aidos Khamitov as the principal double bass, and Louisa Peng on piano.

The program for this event includes a selection of classical masterpieces:
- J.S. Bach's Suite for Cello No. 2, featuring movements such as Prelude and Allemande.
- Eugène Ysaÿe's Sonata No.4 for Solo Violin in E minor, with movements including Allemande Lento maestoso, Sarabande Quasi lento, and Finale Presto ma non troppo.
- Franz Schubert's Trout Quintet in A major, with sections like Andante F major, Allegro Vivace A major.

The Danenberg Honors Recital is named in memory of Emil Charles Danenberg, who served Oberlin as a member of the Conservatory Piano Faculty for thirty years, Dean of the Conservatory of Music and 11th President of Oberlin College.

Eugène Ysaÿe was considered one of the leading violinists of his era. The Belgian composer’s Chant d’hiver conjures up a sparkling, winter setting, followed by the song of the nightingale in Stravinsky’s Le chant du Rossignol. The Russian composer originally wrote this for a ballet based on Hans Christian’s Andersen fairytale The Nightingale. The morning concert ends with Respighi’s festive Pini di Roma, a tribute to the eternal city’s stunning pine trees. All these masterpieces bring the beauty of nature to life in music ... Can you think of a better way to start your Sunday morning?

The Antwerp Symphony will pay tribute to the deep connection between nature and music under the baton of Jun Märkl. Vaughan Williams’s The lark ascending is an absolute masterpiece for violin and will be performed on this occasion by Elisabeth Competition laureate Akiko Suwanai. The winter splendour of Ysaÿes Chant d’hiver will be supplemented with the healing song of the nightingale in Stravinsky’s Le Chant du rossignol and the festive Italian magnificence of Respighi’s Pini di Roma. Cosmic force is the main thrust of Uzu, Toshio Hosokawa’s experiential work, which was inspired by traditional Japanese shô music. The orchestra is divided into several groups, both on and off stage, among the audience. That way the audience is surrounded by music: a memorable, immersive experience.

The early years of the 20th century witnessed the emergence of a remarkable new approach to composition. This program highlights works by four of the finest composers from this era. In the works of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor—one of the most renowned composers of his time—and Reynaldo Hahn audiences will hear genius at work. Known primarily as a violin virtuoso, Eugène Ysaÿe created music that is now regarded as pioneering. Finally, in the piano quintet of the Swiss-American Ernest Bloch, we find one of the most skillful, inventive, and riveting examples of the genre ever created.

Departmental Recitals showcase performance departments through its students. Featuring various students and repertoire, and curated by the faculty, performances in this recital highlight SFCM programs and the wide range of study. 

Winner of the 2015 Queen Elisabeth Competition, this young Dutch violinist has already soloed with the Cleveland Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and other leading international ensembles.
