Ana Julija Mlejnik Železnik is a Slovenian violinist who has performed as a soloist on international stages such as Tokyo, Paris, London, Brussels, Ancona, Ljubljana and Toronto. She has won the first prize at the Genoa International Competition and has shared the stage with many important musicians. She is also the artistic director of the Loka da Camera Chamber Music Festival in Škofja Loka, Slovenia. Additionally, she is a member of several chamber music ensembles.

To start our Classics Series, Music Director Nicholas Hersh and the MSO will guide us through the four seasons. The evening will start with Mendelssohn’s romantic Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Ortiz’s La Calaca which features driving rhythms and stirring melodies inspired by the traditions of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) that celebrate the afterlife in Mexican culture. Finally, we’ll dive deeper into each season with a “mixtape” from Hersh featuring one movement each from Vivaldi, Richter, Ysaÿe, and Piazzolla to create an exploration not only of the seasons, but of each of their cultures.

Charlotte Spruit returns to perform a solo recital at Wigmore Hall. A YCAT artist since 2023, and winner of the First Prize at the Leipzig International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition, Charlotte plays frequently at chamber music festivals across Europe. Her work intertwining music with different art forms led her to first prize at the Goodmesh Concours in 2022.

This concert marks the Tippet debut of two multi-faceted artists – Grammy-nominated violinist Tessa Lark and classical and jazz harpist Charles Overton. Tessa Lark, consistently praised by critics and audiences for her astounding range of sounds, technical agility, and musical elegance, is also a highly acclaimed fiddler in the tradition of her native Kentucky. Charles Overton is a frequent performer with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops, as well as jazz clubs throughout the northeast. He aims to create a musical environment that is accessible, exciting, and resonates deeply with audiences. Lark and Overton are performers, arrangers, and composers of a program including early romantic virtuoso music by Camille Saint-Saëns, Eugène Ysaÿe, and Jean Cras; a traditional fiddle work “Boy in the Gap”; and the Morgan Lewis jazz standard "How High the Moon". Their performance will conclude with a trip to Argentina for Astor Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango.

New Zealand-born violinist Geneva Lewis has forged a reputation as a musician of consummate artistry. Named a BBC New Generation Artist (2022–24), Ms. Lewis is also the recipient of a 2022 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, and a 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant. She was Grand Prize winner of the 2020 Concert Artists Guild Competition, winner of the Kronberg Academy’s Prince of Hesse Prize (2021), Musical America’s New Artist of the Month (June 2021), a Performance Today Young Artist in Residence, and a YCAT Concordia Artist.

The Milwaukee Shepherd Express conjectured that he “well may be the best violinist in the world. [His] gorgeous sound is ample and rich always. Every detail is played with perfectly clear intent.” Augustin Hadelich’s astonishing technique, eloquent phrasing, and seeming effortlessness will be on display in two of Bach’s works for unaccompanied violin. These pinnacles of compositional achievement offer a supreme challenge to the soloist on technical, physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. Inspired by a performance of Bach's six sonatas and partitas for unaccompanied violin, the Belgian composer and violinist Eugene Ysaÿe wrote his own set of six solo sonatas in 1923. Each of the sonatas was dedicated to a younger violinist and reflects something of Ysaÿe's concept of the dedicatee's personality. Hadelich will play the second sonata of the set, in which Bach is not just the inspiration, but the "obsession,” (the work’s subtitle). It contains a musical quotation from the Bach E major partita which opens this program. Perkinson’s Blue/s Forms deftly hops genres in a fusion of both blues and baroque styles. Over the course of The Grauman Fellowship, Artem Diaz Kolesov Fominyx has developed his artistry by taking on the challenge of learning, performing, and recording two large collections of music: the Brahms violin sonatas and the Ysaÿe violin sonatas. This evening, Artem will be replicating the experience of The People’s Ensemble meetings, which usually concluded with community members inviting him to share his progress on the Ysaÿe sonatas. His care in learning these technically demanding works included a thorough analysis of notation and musical ideas, which he incorporated into his lessons throughout his project. Artem encouraged the participants to also practice sharing their own progress to others in the community, through his weekly learning engagements which helped individual participants to lean into their own artistry to best support the ensemble. 

In addition to the experience they developed together to present on this evening, the result of their preparation can be heard in the performance of the second movement of the fourth sonata, where Artem and the People’s Ensemble will collaborate in performance.

Augustin Hadelich is one of the great violinists of our time. Often referred to by colleagues as a musician’s musician, he was named Musical America’s 2018 “Instrumentalist of the Year,” and is consistently cited worldwide for his phenomenal technique, soulful approach, and insightful interpretations. Hadelich won a 2016 Grammy® Award for “Best Classical Instrumental Solo.” Born in Italy to German parents, Augustin Hadelich is now an American citizen. He holds an Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School and received the Gold Medal at the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, an Avery Fisher Career Grant (2009), a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship in the UK (2011), the Warner Music Prize (2015), and was appointed to the violin faculty at Yale School of Music. Augustin Hadelich plays the violin “Leduc, ex-Szeryng” fashioned by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù in 1744 and generously loaned to him by a patron through the Tarisio Trust.

Risa Hokamura began the violin at the age of three, and at the age of 10 she began to capture top prizes in competitions in Japan. She first came to international attention upon winning the Silver Medal at the 2018 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, where she performed the Tchaikovsky Concerto with the Indianapolis Symphony conducted by Leonard Slatkin. Ms. Hokamura won First Prize in the 2018 Young Concert Artists International Auditions at the age of 17.

Casco Phil will be accompanying the stars of the Brussels Cello Festival during this festive gala evening.

In the wonderful acoustic of the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels, artistic director Han Bin Yoon organises a biennial festival showcasing the warm tenor tones of the stringed instrument. During this third edition of the festival, Casco Phil will be the musical partner for a varied programme of symphonic cello music. Iconic cellist Gary Hoffman will play Bruch’s masterpiece Kol Nidrei, while the Queen Elisabeth Laureate Hayoung Choi will guide the audience through a less known work, La Muse et le Poète. Anne Gastinel will present a Belgian masterpiece with Ysaÿes’ Meditation while David Cohen – Principal cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra – joins us for the Saint-Saëns’ Concerto in A minor.

The second performance in this magnificent place unites some of the Festival’s guest musicians in a program dedicated to a Sonata for two violins by the great Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe and the great Quintet for piano and strings by Antonin Dvorak.

Paul Huang was a recipient of a 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant and a 2017 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists. Huang makes recent and forthcoming appearances with the Mariinsky Orchestra with Valery Gergiev, Detroit Symphony with Leonard Slatkin, Houston Symphony with Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Rotterdam Philharmonic with Lahav Shani, Seoul Philharmonic with Markus Stenz, and return to the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan as its artist-in-residence. A frequent guest artist at music festivals worldwide, he recently stepped in for Anne-Sophie Mutter at Bravo! Vail Music Festival playing Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 with Chamber Orchestra Vienna-Berlin as well as recital debuts at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland and Aspen Music Festival, both to critical acclaim. He is an artist member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and plays on the legendary 1742 ex-Wieniawski Guarneri del Gesù on loan through the Stradivari Society of Chicago.

Experience the majestic blend of cultures with the "Symphonie du Nouveau Monde" performed by the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (OPRL) under the baton of Pablo González. This iconic symphony, first premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1893, is a masterful fusion of Czech music and melodies inspired by the musical folklore of the Native Americans. Notably, it features one of the most beautiful themes ever written for the English horn in its slow movement.

The concert will also spotlight the orchestral music of Ysaÿe, which has seen a resurgence of interest over the past decade. Among the rediscovered gems is the enchanting "Poème nocturne" from 1926, with the OPRL having the honor of recording the first album of this piece in December 2023.

This performance is part of the "Grands classiques" series and is available for both subscription and à la carte booking. It's a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a program that includes DELIUS's "The Walk to the Paradise Garden," YSAŸE's "Poème nocturne," and DVOŘÁK's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World."
