Palma de Mallorca meets Barcelona—at least in the form of the two Spanish virtuosos Francisco Fullana and Alba Ventura. But their predominantly Spanish program also combines—figuratively speaking—idyllic island life with the vibrant metropolis: The two talents, who have joined forces for a CD recording in 2023, bring with them works such as Joaquín Turina's atmospheric "Sonata española," Enrique Granado's spirited violin sonata, and Pablo de Sarasate's famous and fiery "Zigeunerweisen." The members of the Azahar Ensemble all come from Spain - but what does that mean? Spain is more than just castanets, fandango and flamenco. The country consists of different regions with very different cultures, and with a corresponding panoramic view, the five musicians on flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon want to introduce themselves and their country in this night concert. Their program ranges from Catalonia to Galicia to Andalusia, from sacred music of the 16th century to chamber music of the mid-20th century. You can hear arrangements of folk songs, a fantasia after Domenico Scarlatti by Miquel Ramos, and we get to know two composers with the surname Turina, a grandfather and his grandson. Grandfather Joaquín pays homage to his birthplace Seville in his Opus 2, grandson José Luis has written a virtuoso wind quintet entitled Quinteto de Agua , and the Azahar Ensemble will do everything in its power to make the premiere of this entertaining piece a lavish sound festival.

The combination of the guitar’s intoxicating sounds, the language’s seductive tones, and the vivid style illustrate the richness of this culture.

Since 2011, Civitas Ensemble has combined the outstanding collaborative musicianship of multiple top Chicago Symphony Orchestra string chairs with a thirst for interdisciplinary exploration of new and traditional chamber music, including pairings with dancers, visual artists, and poets. Their Alla Zingarese project, released on Cedille in 2018, leaped to the whirlwind crossroads of Western classical and Romani folk traditions, creating “a trip through history … and a venture into new musical territory with surprises aplenty” (Chicago on the Aisle). In their first appearance at Ravinia as Civitas—though all veterans of the festival’s stages—the core trio of CSO Asst. Concertmaster Yuan-Qing Yu, CSO Asst. Principal Cellist Kenneth Olsen (an early 2000s alum of Ravinia’s Steans Institute), and Chicago College of Performing Arts Piano Program Head Winston Choi bring a program of Turina and Tchaikovsky headed up by a picturesque recent work by longtime Chicagoan Stacy Garrop.

Love is in the air for this program laced with romance. Turina’s Scene Andalouse is luxurious and playful, while Morris’s Four Personalities explores the expressive side of the relationship between colors. “My loving wife Clara and I invite you to hear her six songs, beautifully sung through the voice of the oboe. I wrote my contrasting and vigorous Piano Quintet in a fit of inspiration for my virtuoso wife to premiere.”

The symphonic suite Scheherazade, inspired by fairy tales from One Thousand and One Nights , is one of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's most effective and successful works. Written in 1888, the composer uses dazzling instrumental colors to take up Persian stories and his music depicts a fantastic oriental fairy tale world. In the first half of the concert, the Spanish conductor Pablo Mielgo will perform works from his homeland. In addition to Joaquín Turina's string piece La oración del torero, Manuel de Falla's Nights in Spanish Gardens for piano and orchestra will be heard. De Falla was inspired by the painter Santiago Rusiñol, who colorfully captured impressions of the incomparable beauty of Spanish gardens in his paintings. The real reason why this work was written is none other than to evoke places, moods and feelings , said the composer in 1916. The solo part of the Symphonic Impressions will be performed by the young Spanish pianist and winner of the Cleveland International Piano Competition Martín García García.

You can simply go to a concert at the Philharmonie, spontaneously, during your lunch break – and with free admission: every Wednesday at 13:00 between September and June. The programme lasts 40 to 50 minutes: chamber music, piano works or a percussion duo – everything from Tchaikovsky to tango. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Karajan Academy regularly perform, as well as guests from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Berlin music conservatories. As can be expected at a lunch concert, catering is available from 12 noon until shortly before the concert begins.

Named one of the greatest string quartets of the last 100 years by BBC Music Magazine, the Grammy Award nominated Dover Quartet’s rise from up-and-coming young ensemble who swept all the prizes at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition to occupying a spot at the top of their field has been “practically meteoric” (Strings). With its burnished warmth, incisive rhythms, and natural phrasing, the Quartet’s distinctive sound has helped confirm its status as “the young American string quartet of the moment” (The New Yorker). For our annual free concert, guitarist Roberto Capocchi gives a solo recital featuring spirited works by four leading 20th-century composers, including the Homenaje a Tárrega by Joaquín Turina, which honors the iconic, late-Romantic Spanish guitarist and composer Francisco Tárrega, and the only original work for solo guitar by the legendary Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera: the Sonata, Op. 47.

Grammy Award winners Ana María Martínez and Craig Terry perform song cycles by Rodrigo, Falla, Campos Parsi, and Turina that reveal the richness of the Spanish-language art-song tradition.

Ana María Martínez & Craig Terry Recital

Grammy Award-winning soprano Ana María Martínez has captivated audiences worldwide in some of opera’s most iconic and intriguing leading roles. Recent highlights include Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni at the Metropolitan Opera, the title role in Florencia en el Amazonas with Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Mimi in La Bohème in San Diego Opera’s first-ever-drive-in opera. Future performances include her portrayal of Frida Kahlo in Gabriela Lena Frank’s El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego for Los Angeles Opera. Hear the voice that Opera News says “harkens back to the golden age” as Martinez joins forces with Myra Huang, one of her generation’s top collaborative  pianists and director of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Artist Development program.

Originally from Medellín, Colombia, soprano Melissa Medina is currently pursuing her second master’s degree in vocal performance at the Carnegie Mellon School of Music under the guidance of renowned soprano Maria Spacagna. Her roles at CMU have included Annina in Kamala Sankaram’s Looking at You, and Soloist/Ensemble in Craig Hella Johnson’s Considering Matthew Shepard. Additional recent operatic appearances include Frasquita in Carmen with Arte Lirico Foundation, Rosaura in Los Gavilanes with Prolirica Foundation, and Mary Magdalene in Rob Gardner’s The Lamb of God with Memorial Park Church. A frequent recitalist in her home country, Melissa has been featured at the Australian Embassy in Colombia, and at various venues throughout Peru, Argentina, Italy, Spain, and in the United States. Other highlights in the concert arena include her appearance as soloist in Rutter’s Gloria and Bach’s Magnificat with the Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra. Melissa has been honored with many awards, including a 2016 scholarship from the Carolina Foundation to do a master’s degree at the Barcelona Conservatori del Liceu in Barcelona, Spain. Additionally, she was one of the winners of the EAFIT Symphony Orchestra’s Young Talents Competition and a finalist in the Colombian National Singing Competition in 2018. She has been fortunate to participate in several masterclasses over the years, including Grace Bumbry, Dalton Baldwin, Juan Felipe Molano, and Jonas Kaufmann, among others.

The celebrated Dolce Suono Trio will perform a dazzling program featuring beloved works by Maurice Ravel and Joaquín Turina, in their own arrangements, commissioned works by Pulitzer Prize and 3-time Grammy Award winner Jennifer Higdon and the trio’s own pianist Charles Abramovic, Leonard Bernstein’s beloved Overture to “Candide,” as you’ve never heard it before, and Brazilian choros, showcasing the group’s specialty in Latin music. Dolce Suono Trio is comprised of internationally acclaimed artists flutist Mimi Stillman, founding Artistic Director of Dolce Suono Ensemble, cellist Gabriel Cabezas, and pianist Charles Abramovic.

Four pieces of orchestral artwork are showcased in this intensely expressionistic program led by acclaimed conductor and regular Minnesota Orchestra guest Carlos Miguel Prieto. The Ring of Fire and Love evokes an “earth-shattering, creative and cataclysmic moment,” as described by composer Outi Tarkiainen. Richard Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder is a set of five musical love letters, sung here by soprano Emily Magee, followed by Joaquin Turina’s colorful and passionate Danzas Fantásticas. The Orchestra then creates a kaleidoscope of swirling sound in Claude Debussy’s classic portrait of the sea.
