Nina Drath began her piano studies at the age of four in Katowice, Poland at the age of four with Wanda Chmielowska. She started to concertize abroad at the age of eleven in Czechoslovakia, where she made her first recording for radio broadcasting. She continued her piano studies with Regina Smendzianka at the Academy of Music in Warsaw, where she received her master's degree in Piano Performance. Then she entered the Virtuoso Study Program, which she completed in 1980. Between 1975 and 1980 she performed with the symphony orchestras in Frankfurt and Leipzig and competed in several international piano competitions. She was a prize winner in both the Paloma O'Shea International Piano Competition in Spain in 1976 and the International Piano Competitionin Senigallia, Italy in 1979, and won a Polish piano competition in Slupsk in 1979. Nina Drath is the Founder and President of the Frederyk Chopin Society of Texas, Inc.

This commemorative concert marks the 30th anniversary of the tragic Oklahoma City Bombing, a day that remains etched in the hearts of Oklahomans and the nation. The evening promises to be an emotional tribute, featuring the world premiere of a requiem by Clint Williams, our Composer in Residence. This piece has been composed specifically for this occasion, capturing the essence of remembrance and resilience.

Additionally, the concert will showcase the Oklahoma Premiere Performance of "Reflections on a Memorial" by DFW-based composer Quinn Mason. This piece holds particular significance as it reflects on the memorial itself, with our venue being directly next to the OKC Bombing Memorial, a site that was impacted by the tragic event.

The program also includes Dvořák’s "A Hero’s Song," op. 111, a piece that narrates the story of the Oklahoma Standard—a testament to the spirit of a community rising to support and uplift each other in the face of adversity. The evening will conclude with Richard Rogers' iconic "Oklahoma," a nod to the enduring spirit of our state.

Featured Musicians for the evening include Kaleb Benda, serving as the Music Director & Conductor, alongside Clint Williams, our Composer in Residence, and the talented Musicians of the Oklahoma Chamber Symphony.

The UMD Wind Orchestra pays tribute to American conductor and arranger Donald Hunsberger. From 1962 until his retirement in 2002, he served as professor of conducting and ensembles at Eastman School of Music. During his 37 years as conductor of the school’s acclaimed Eastman Wind Ensemble, Hunsberger premiered more than 100 compositions and maintained a repertory ranging from the 16th-century through contemporary works by Joseph Schwantner, Michael Colgrass and Karel Husa, among others.

nspiring the framework for this event is Music for Wilderness Lake, a 1979 piece by composer R. Murray Shafer. Its two movements, “Dawn” and “Dusk,” are performed by twelve trombonists surrounding a wilderness lake at the stated times of day. Schafer’s environmental music is rooted in the idea that the location and time of a performance are as important as the notes played. He was concerned with creating new rituals for music, a return to the outdoors, and working within the “space-time” framework that concerned space as a structural consideration in composition: as sound travels to players around the lake, delay must be taken into account. This will be accompanied by a new work, Dwayne Milburn’s composition for eight trombones, antiphonally performed a la Gabrieli in St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice. Gabrielli in LA is brought instead to the sanctuary of nature. At the close of the performance, the audience is invited to perform on their own instruments and noise-making devices will be distributed, exploring the sonic capacities of the environment on their own.

Proclaimed "a phenomenon" by the Los Angeles Times and "one of the best pianists of his generation" by the Philadelphia Inquirer, Stewart Goodyear is an accomplished young pianist as a concerto soloist, chamber musician, recitalist and composer. Mr. Goodyear began his training at The Royal Conservatory in Toronto, received his bachelor's degree from Curtis Institute of Music, and completed his master's at The Juilliard School. Known as an improviser and composer, he has been commissioned by orchestras and chamber music organizations, and performs his own solo works.  Mr. Goodyear has performed with major orchestras of the world , including the Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, plus many more. Maestro Conner Gray Covington’s season opener reflects his aesthetic of JOY through musical expression. Composer Quinn Mason (b. 1996) wrote A Joyous Trilogy in hopes of creating a piece that is the “very embodiment of happiness and cheerfulness, an accessible work that would put any listener in a good mood.” Following this is Mozart’s exquisite Exsultate Jubilate (‘Exult, Rejoice!’), which the composer wrote at the ripe age of 23, featuring the stunning soprano Amy Owens. Dvořák’s 8th Symphony, known for its bucolic euphoria and the sheer joy of being alive in a world of natural wonders, closes out Covington’s program.

Strauss’ Don Juan is a heartbreaking retelling of the lothario who searches for his soulmate until he succumbs to loneliness. For the past 25 years, Claire Compton has been the principal oboist for the Florence Symphony Orchestra. ROCO’s Connections Series returns to the Asia Society Texas Center on October 20 with "Rise Up," an evening dedicated to thought-provoking new chamber works and dialogue spotlighting the ongoing fight for women’s rights and equality in the U.S., Iran, and around the world.

- **World Premiere of "Breaking the Veil"** by Grammy-winning Season 19 Composer-In-Residence Richard Danielpour. This piece is inspired by the current uprising and historic struggles of Iranian women seeking equal rights and freedom. It honors Danielpour’s Persian heritage and is dedicated to his mother, Mehri Danielpour Weil, an Iranian sculptor.
- **New Scoring of "The 19th Amendment"** by Texas-native composer Quinn Mason. This ballet, performed with members of the Houston Contemporary Dance Company, not only depicts the struggle for obtaining the right to vote but also contemplates the impact of the 19th Amendment on our current generation. The performance will feature new choreography by Marlana Doyle, Founding Artistic and Executive Director of the Houston Contemporary Dance Company.

Florence Price was widely performed during the 1930’s, but by the fifties her work had dropped from view. Since the rediscovery of the full score for this concerto, pianist Michelle Cann’s ‘exquisite, authoritative’ performances are reintroducing Price to audiences and critics. Passionate, part Romantic, part bluesy, the Concerto is a small sample of Price’s repertory.</p>
<p>Conductor Tito Muñoz will open our final program with works by Buxtehude and Quinn Mason and close with Beethoven’s joyous Symphony No. 7. Beethoven called this work “one of the happiest products of my poor talents”— the perfect choice to conclude his 250th plus one, and Symphony Silicon Valley’s 20th anniversary season.

Just how far can dreams take us? Beethoven’s King Stephen Overture pays homage to the national hero of Hungary who, according to legend, received his crown because of a dream.

But sometimes dreams can take us to new worlds: American Peter Boyer’s Ellis Island is a poignant multi-media exploration of the immigrant experience with dialogue by actors from local community theater, DreamWrights. The program is accompanied by images from the first place many of our immigrant forebears landed in this brave new world.

The American composer Quinn Mason, inspired by the brilliant women in her life, crafted She Dreams of Flying to highlight the artistry of the orchestra. Finally, our own Music Director Lawrence Golan has taken inspiration from the Old Testament’s dream interpreter to create Joseph, the Dream Reader; the York Symphony is honored to host the east coast premiere of this exciting new work.
