Our opening concert begins with a work by Haitian American composer Sydney Guillaume. Titled Lavil Okap, or “the city of Cap-Haïtien” in Haitian Creole, the piece was composed in 2020. The music draws inspiration from the African rhythms that enslaved people brought to Haiti, and from the very first notes, it projects a jubilant atmosphere driven by catchy rhythms throughout. He really brings Haitian street music to the concert hall. It’s a piece that is a lot of fun to play, and I know you’ll love listening to it. As a special treat, the composer himself will join us for the performance.

The centerpiece of this concert is the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by composer Philip Lasser. His L’Abécédaire de Huon, Roi de Cambrai  sets a series of 13th century French poems that follow the letters of the alphabet. Continuing with works in French, the chorus will perform a piece by Haitian American composer Sydney Guillaume that set a poem by his father, Gabriel T. Guillaume: Le Dernier Voyage, a meditation on the joys and pains of life. Also on the program are Gabriel Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Romancero Gitano, featuring poems by Federico Garcia Lorca and classical guitar.

We begin our season celebrating America’s 250th birthday, AKA semiquincentennial, with love in the air. The playful and blues-inflected Café Music comes from Detroit-born composer Paul Schoenfield. You will fall in “love at first hear” with Dale’s Romance. Brahms’s Horn Trio is a gorgeous compositional gem.

The Godon Residence

An Art Institute of Chicago painting inspired Young’s Song of the Lark. Del Aguila’s Herbsttag is an eclectic mix of jazz and South American styles. Thuille’s Sextet has solo and symphonic dimensions along with warm lyricism; a bridge of old and new styles.
