"A Ceremony of Carols" is a new Christmas tradition, featuring original ballets by Claire Kretzschmar, former New York City Ballet Soloist and Ballet Hartford's Artistic Director. The program begins with the world premiere of "Weihnachtsbaum" with music by Franz Liszt, and culminates in "A Ceremony of Carols" featuring twelve glorious songs by Benjamin Britten. Co-produced by Grammy Award-winning singer Katy Avery, this double feature is elevated by live piano, harp, and choral music.

In Robert Schumann’s energetic Carnaval miniatures, Russian American pianist Kirill Gerstein “gets down deep,” highlighting something darker looming in the apparent revelry with “characteristic subtlety” (The New York Times). Such a searching approach to even tried-and-true showpieces makes Gerstein one of today’s most compelling recitalists. At the core of the program are a tour-de-force of concert staples, including Ravel’s dazzling solo-piano arrangement of La valse and Liszt’s Romantic masterpiece, the Piano Sonata in B Minor. Completing the program are Liszt’s mystically beautiful “Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude” and the New York premiere of Francisco Coll’s Waltzes Toward Civilization, inspired by Federico García Lorca’s seminal book of poetry, Poet in New York.

Embark on a musical journey with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (OPRL) as they tour Hungary, from the vibrant city of Budapest to the historic Pécs. Under the baton of Gergely Madaras, this tour promises to be a celebration of Hungary's rich musical tradition, featuring performances in three major venues across the country. The highlight of the tour is the performance on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 7:30 PM at the prestigious Budapest Liszt Academy.

The OPRL, with its distinguished history as the sole professional symphonic ensemble in Francophone Belgium since 1960, will present a program that showcases the orchestra's versatility and rich sound. The repertoire includes the somber "Lugubre Gondole" by Liszt in an orchestration by John Adams, Elgar's deeply emotional Cello Concerto, and Franck's Symphony, a piece that serves as a calling card for the OPRL, highlighting their role as cultural ambassadors.

After a tour in Slovenia, Germany and Austria, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra joyfully welcomes conductor Shiyeon Sung back to the Queen Elisabeth Hall. Liszt found inspiration for Les Préludes in the French poet Alphonse de Lamartine's Méditations poétiques, expressing the overwhelming power of nature and the transience of existence. Liszt translated these ideas into a cascade of intertwining thematic figures. Despite Antonín Dvořák's mastery of dramatic turns, his Sixth Symphony reveals his most optimistic side. Drawing inspiration from Czech folk music, Dvořák incorporates characteristic dance rhythms and melodic twists, showcasing the vibrant spirit of his homeland, though not in direct citation."

Franz Liszt’s Les préludes is like a mini symphony: small in scale, but huge in emotional power, bringing to life themes of love and the natural world. Felix Mendelssohn’s last concerto is perhaps his most famous. The violin takes charge from the second bar with the first of many glorious themes. Schubert pours his orchestral experience and melodic genius into his last completed symphony (the ‘Great’) – a suitably grand final word.

Richard Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra, with its immediately recognizable opening “sunrise,” is a musical response to Friedrich Nietzsche’s metaphysical novel of the same name. Hannah Kendall uses unusual orchestral techniques and music boxes in her recent O flower of fire, inspired by the work of Guyanese-British poet Martin Carter.

Showcasing the excellence of female brass players and musicians from marginalized groups, Seraph Brass celebrates its tenth anniversary in Miami. Winners of the American Prize in Chamber Music, the group has been praised for their “beautiful sounds" (American Record Guide), "fine playing” (Gramophone), and “staggeringly high caliber of performance” (Textura). 

Seraph Brass performs a diverse body of repertoire, ranging from original transcriptions to newly commissioned works and core classics. The program features works by women (Rene Orth, Reena Esmail, Catherine McMichael), American (Anthony DiLorenzo, Kevin Day, Jeff Scott, Kevin McKee), and European (Edvard Grieg, Giuseppe Verdi, Liszt, Franz Dinicu) composers.

Commencing piano studies at the age of three, the young Israeli pianist was performing at Carnegie Hall at the age of six and gave a successful performance of Chopin’s First Concerto at the Teatro San Carlo, Naples, at the age of 11. His first solo CD included performances of Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann and the Liszt Sonata, in which, according to Fanfare, he raced ahead ‘with completely clear, unblurred passagework, a commanding tone, and remarkable presence. If his aim is to rock the hall, he eminently succeeds’.

Passion and Romance – You’ll find them both in the East Texas Symphony Orchestra’s 2024/2025 season opening night concert. Acclaimed pianist Arturo Nieto-Dorantes displays his virtuosic skills with Richard Lee and the ETSO in a performance of the Concierto Romantico by Manuel Ponce, the “father” of Mexican classical music. The concert also features Franz Liszt’s evocative Les Preludes and concludes with the vibrant Symphony No. 7 of Ludwig van Beethoven, which the composer himself thought was one of his best works. This trio of pieces provides a fitting celebration to launch the new season.

Music transcends today's actual boundaries, echoes the natural, musical boundaries of yesteryear, and above all shows how much music is the connecting factor between different cultural regions. Casco Phil takes you on a journey that began hundreds of years ago and introduces you to folk music from Hungary, stirring Klezmer from Romania, festive French music at the Court of Louis XIV, and much more. You will hear beautiful music from all corners of Europe as we take you on a complete 'tour musicale', from Western Europe to Central Europe and Northern Europe, and then via Eastern Europe to Southern Europe. The program takes a journey through Europe, taking as its starting point the current members of the European Union. At the same time we also take a journey in time. Music from the 16th century is discussed (by the Mechelen Philippus De Monte), but also baroque music, music from classicism and romanticism, a significant portion of folk music arranged for orchestra, and of course also a touch of accessible modern music. In this way, cultural regions are musically highlighted through the different epochs that have molded Europe into what it is today.

The 75th anniversary season comes to an overpowering conclusion with one of the most spectacular and moving acts in all of opera, the finale of Wagner’s Die Walküre. You’ll immediately recognize the iconic Ride of the Valkyries which opens the act. The eight Valkyries are the products of the god Wotan’s affair with the earth’s wisdom goddess Erda. Their job is to carry slain heroes to the afterlife in Valhalla on their flying horses. At the beginning of the act, Wotan’s favorite daughter Brünnhilde is missing. She finally appears, but not with a fallen warrior. Instead, it’s Sieglinde, whom Wotan had fathered with a wolf along with her twin brother Siegmund. The twins committed incest back in Act One, and now Sieglinde is pregnant with the future hero Siegfried. Wotan’s wife Fricka, goddess of marriage, didn’t approve of the situation, and pressured Wotan to arrange for Siegmund to die in Act Two. Brünnhilde tried to intervene to save Siegmund, enraging Wotan. To punish her defiance, Wotan strips Brünnhilde of her godhood and plans to put her into a magical sleep to be available to the first man who finds her. Horrified by this prospect, Brünnhilde convinces Wotan to surround her by fire so that only a brave hero can awaken her.

Aspen alum Zlatomir Fung is the youngest cellist to win First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Only 25, he’ll be joined by 23 year-old Canadian pianist Tony Siqi Yun, who stepped in last-minute to wow the Aspen audience in a recital in 2023. Hear these two rising stars in Clara Schumann’s dreamlike Nocturne, composed when she was only 15. Two solo performances follow, with Yun playing the one-movement Après une lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata of Litszt, inspired by a Victor Hugo poem. Fung will be showcased in Britten’s first solo cello suite, which hearkens back to the techniques and textures employed in Bach’s cello suites. Following intermission, the two reunite for Rachmaninoff’s last chamber work, his gorgeous and deeply moving cello sonata.

To complement these two flagships of pianistic virtuosity, the concert also offers the profound introspection and yearning Romanticism of Johannes Brahms.

This timeless story is reenvisioned through an electrifying new production under the baton of the renowned conductor Thomas Adès. The performance will feature an innovative blend of hand-drawn animation, live puppetry, and compelling storytelling, brought to life by the groundbreaking talents of The Paper Cinema. With Nicholas Rawling leading as the illustrator and artistic director, and Chris Reed as the musical director, the evening is set to be a magical journey into a world of devilish delights.

The musical program also includes a selection of pieces that complement the theme of the night, featuring world-class musicians. Inon Barnatan will perform Liszt's "Mephisto Waltz No.1, S.514" on the piano, setting the tone with its devilish charm. The evening will also showcase Tartini's "Sonata in G Minor for Violin and Continuo The Devil’s Trill," with Augustin Hadelich on violin, Inon Barnatan on harpsichord, and a to-be-announced cellist, adding a touch of eerie elegance. Paganini's "Caprice No. 24 in A Minor" will further enchant the audience with Augustin Hadelich returning to the violin.

The ensemble for "The Soldier’s Tale" includes a talented lineup: Thomas Adès as conductor, a to-be-determined actor, Alexi Kenney on violin, Mark Simpson on clarinet, Eleni Katz on bassoon, Chris Coletti on cornet, James Miller on trombone, Michael Yeung on percussion, and Anthony Manzo on bass.
