Few can match the dazzling brilliance and zen-like focus that Boris Giltburg brings to every performance. His latest Wigmore Hall recital would command attention for no other reason than its inclusion of Liszt’s Sonata in B minor, a titanic monument of Romantic music. Yet the Moscow-born Israeli pianist places Liszt’s single-movement masterwork in company with a succession of musically powerful, technically-demanding compositions, crowned by Gaspard de la nuit, Ravel’s mesmerising suite of character pieces.

Renowned for the intense focus of his music making and what the Guardian calls ‘the gentle, unshowy authority of his stage manner’, Konstantin Lifschitz combines the best of the great Russian tradition with tremendous poetic refinement. He begins with the Romantic music of Robert Schumann, before plunging into the headlong drama of Liszt’s First Mephisto Waltz and the striking contrasts of Brahms’s late Fantasien, which recall the fluctuating moods of Schumann’s youthful Kreisleriana.

Around 20 kilometers from the Philharmonie Mercatorhalle lies the Folkwang University of the Arts, one of the most renowned musical talent factories in the German university landscape. Henri Sigfridsson, a Finnish musician, has been a professor there since 2011, fostering musical excellence in the next generation. He is also a successful pianist, performing in major concert halls and at international festivals such as the Salzburg Festival. In 1994, he won first prize at the International Franz Liszt Competition in Weimar, and in this concert he will also play excerpts from the composer's "Harmonies poétiques et religieuses," such as the serenely meditative "Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude" and the heroic "Funérailles." In this piano extra, Sigfridsson shares the stage with Vincent Heeren, born in Herne in 2009, who was accepted into his piano class as a junior student at the age of nine. With gripping virtuosity, the provocative images of Nikolaus Lenau's Faust poem are translated into music in "Mephisto Waltz No. 1." The concert opens with "Le tombeau de Couperin," a suite in the spirit of classical French music—and a tribute by Ravel to his friends who died in the war.

We look forward to immersing ourselves in diverse musical worlds under the direction of Susanna Mälkki – including that of Mozart, for whom play was an important part of his life: He particularly loved billiards and skittles, as well as chess and trick-tock – or he would sit at the card table and gamble with Tarock, Brandeln, Piquet, or Pharaoh. This enthusiasm is also audible in his often playful music. Together with Bertrand Chamayou as soloist, we will perform one of his most popular works: Piano Concerto No. 23 from 1786, which was composed around the same time as his comic opera "Le nozze di Figaro" – a fact that is particularly evident in the surprising scene changes of the finale. Also on the program in Würzburg: A composition by Liszt, who wrote significant symphonic poems. He drew inspiration for his last contribution to this genre, entitled "From the Cradle to the Grave," from a drawing by a Hungarian painter.

Hans Pfitzner composed large-scale, sophisticated operas, as well as opulent orchestral works. In addition to concertos for violin and cello, he also wrote a four-movement piano concerto in 1922, continuing the late Romantic tradition of Brahms and Max Reger. A noticeably innovative spirit, even a musical visionary, was Franz Liszt, who opened a new chapter in European music history with his symphonic poems around the middle of the 19th century. Three of these compositions for a large, richly timbred orchestra, very different in their content and their manifestations, demonstrate the diversity of creative approaches that Liszt applied to this newly developed, soon to be very prominent, musical genre.

His Fifth Symphony depicts "the development of personality," explained Dmitri Shostakovich. But the highly emotional music from 1937 also documents his threatening situation during the Stalin era. At times pleading, at times hectically overexcited, the music culminates in an overwhelming finale. Franz Liszt's First Piano Concerto is similarly captivating. It is a welcome challenge for the up-and-coming Israeli pianist Yoav Levanon, making his debut with the WDR Symphony Orchestra. The conductor is the Greek Constantinos Carydis. He opens the evening with a work by his fellow countryman Periklis Koukos: a sonorous prologue to Homer's "Odyssey."

Kevin John Edusei returns to conduct a program celebrating the flamboyance and wit of two great Hungarian composers, Liszt and Kodály, beginning with Liszt’s symphonic poem, Les Préludes. Liszt wrote this dramatic piece based on poems depicting the heavens, stormy winds and pastoral scenes. Guest soloist Haochen Zhang performs Liszt’s high-spirited First Piano Concerto, which was criticized by his contemporaries for pushing the bounds of taste, but was later embraced by composers like Béla Bartók. Kodály’s Suite from the opera Háry János draws on his deep knowledge of Hungarian folk melodies to depict the tall tales of an imaginative veteran. The orchestra also presents Richard Strauss’ tone poem, Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks, and breathes life into the roguish German folk hero for which it's named.

Austrian conductor Christoph Koncz invites us to a festival of orchestral images. We begin with the overture to Wagner's Meistersinger , which foreshadows all the opera's themes. With its romantic flair and majesty, it celebrates the artist's freedom from established rules. Wagner's father-in-law, Liszt, and his First Concerto allow American pianist Michelle Cann—a Grammy winner in February 2025—to dazzle us with a dazzling display of virtuosity. The score's evocative and emotional richness also gives a universal dimension to this pillar of the piano repertoire.

Also a conductor, with many years of study under Serge Fournier, he is a graduate in conducting (with distinction in score reading) of the European American Musical Alliance Summer Institute in Paris. Since 2012, Mr. Trammell has served as pianist for Roane Choral Society. He also serves on faculty at Hiwasee College.

The concert itself flows with the charm and energy of a night on the town. Almost exactly nine years ago, the Elbphilharmonie organ was played for the first time in a solo concert. Since then, titular organist Iveta Apkalna, who was also at the console back then, has presented ever-expanding organ repertoire with exciting programs—this time including minimal music by Philip Glass and music by organ favorites Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Liszt, and Pēteris Vasks.

In its program, the Amatis Trio follows in the footsteps of Voltaire's Candide, who discovers the complexity of human existence on his travels. Mozart's K. 502 reflects the initial lightness of the literary masterpiece, while subtle harmonic shifts already hint at deeper complexities beneath the surface. The blend of struggle and spiritual triumph in Mendelssohn's Second Piano Trio seems like a metaphor for Candide's path to resilience and enlightenment. Liszt's Tristia, in turn, moves the listener to reflect on their own search for fulfillment in an imperfect world.

The organ world of this concert offers a wealth of evocative colors and magical impressions – and even a few mythical figures play their games. Johannes Skoog, born in Stockholm in 1992, will bring them musically to life on the keys and pedals: He won First Prize at the Canadian International Organ Competition in 2024 and was recently appointed organist to the Swedish royal court. He opens his Bamberg program with Prokofiev's Toccata of 1912, a "devilishly witty" virtuoso piece of classical modernism. Debussy's sensuously shimmering composition, written in 1894, is characterized by an arabesque-like main theme: A faun revels in intoxicating memories of beautiful nymphs on a summer afternoon.

It was conductor Mariss Jansons who asked Jörg Widmann to compose a concert overture for the performance of Beethoven's 7th and 8th Symphonies. So Widmann wrote for a similar ensemble to Beethoven's at the time, drawing on the timbres and explosiveness of the 7th Symphony. However, the musical elements here appear torn apart – a Beethoven from the shredder. To recall the Seventh's original shock effect, Widmann also includes avant-garde scratching and crackling sounds. This "crazy overture" is great fun.

Join pianist and polymath Kirill Gerstein for a program exploring Liszt and Brahms, two Romantic-era luminaries. Celebrated for his “insightful, boldly projected playing” (Chicago Classical Review), Gerstein opens with Liszt’s gem-like Three Petrarch Sonnets and fantastical Dante Sonata. The second half features Brahms’ youthful and impetuous Scherzo and the majestic warmth of his Sonata No. 3.

Under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen, Colburn’s Maestro Ernst H. Katz Chair of Conducting Studies, the Colburn Orchestra brings to life Bruckner’s sweeping “Romantic” Symphony: a vivid narrative of medieval knights, the enchantment of nature, and the thrilling drama of forest hunts. Joining Esa-Pekka on the program are Salonen Conducting Fellows Aleksandra Melaniuk and Mert Yalniz, with Yalniz conducting the world premiere of his own orchestral composition. Lizst’s bold and playful symphonic poem Les Préludes opens the concert.

Trio Seoul was founded in 2022 by Bienen School associate professor of violin Jinjoo Cho, pianist Kyu Yeon Kim, and cellist and Bienen alumnus Brannon Cho. All three are top prize winners and laureates of prestigious international competitions including the Concours musical international de Montréal, the Gina Bachauer International Young Artists Piano Competition, and the Queen Elisabeth Competition. The trio regularly collaborates with artists in multiple fields, including composers, choreographers, writers, and visual artists, and its members have appeared as soloists with celebrated orchestras throughout the world. The city of Seoul serves as a dynamic symbol of the ensemble’s cultural roots and artistic intensity.
